Hours Of Searching, Yet No Luck

I'm sure that there are plenty of people here whom, even though you probably did as much research as possible and even tried to pinpoint the area you're looking for on google earth or some similar program, when you go looking for the site in person, it constantly eludes you with being someplace completely unobvious.

Well, even with three days of searching, the sites I've looked for have eluded me time and again. One, named the Alaqua Road-cut, which contains molluscs and shells from the Miocene Age, is near a backwood road, but the sources I have gave so little real information to it's location that it could be quite literally anywhere within a half-mile to the north of a church nearby. That covers a lot of ground not to mention erosion and the age of the sources means that the road-cut is so well hidden it could be right under my nose.

One my first day of searching, I seareched for this road-cut looking for the supposdly obvious lower strata, gray shale in the area. Even with driving slowly with careful eyes watching, I saw nothing.

The next day, I managed to locate the general area thanks to the help of friendly librian staff who lived there a long time ago. Again, I searched and searched but I saw only clay and trees on both sides of the road. I decided to stop at a good spot, spottning a dark gray up on the side of the road. I parked my car to investigate it. I made a climb to the grey and cut some of it off. It turned out to be clay the entire time as the place I had cut blazed orange. Frustrated, I go back to the car and drove carefully but so no indications of shale.

Yesterday, my search again turned out to be something like the day before. It was rather annoying and disapointing that even though with hours of research and searching had turned up literally nothing but clay. Even nearby creeks had nothing in them.

But I've seen many things that show that life pays it's most valuable items to those who are persistant. And so, I will keep looking until I find it or find a place where fossils do lie. After all, Walton County is supposed to have very productive creeks and rivers. But if anyone can help locate the Alaqua Road-cut, your help will be greatly appreciated.

When you do find it, it will be worth the wait!
