Busy Day (9/21)
So on Tuesday I woke up at 11 to find that I had turned off my alarm while still in a sleep-like state. That being said, I had missed my first class. and quiz. oops. This "rude awakening" had me rushing to catch a bus to PRI. I'm probably exaggerating because I consider late anything under 15 minutes early. So I had a pleasant 20 minutes at the bus stop to eat the lunch I had bought on the way I got to PRI in the middle of lunch break so we chatted for half an hour. These people have awesome personalities and have my kind of geeky humor. You should see the manager's impression of an ammonite complete with sound effects and hand motions. It reminded me of
After lunch, I was back to labeling and reboxing specimens (Gastropods still :-/). I didn't spend much time there because the lady in charge of volunteering arranged that I meet with someone in charge of Exhibits and then I'd go on to my fossil class.
So I talked a girl in exhibits, she showed me everything from construction to the budget. I didn't have extra time to volunteer during the week which is when most behind-the-scenes people work, so the meeting was kind of pointless but I told her that if she needs extra help on a project she could contact me. After I talked to the lady who arranges volunteer work and she said next semester they're looking for interns that analyze the effectiveness of exhibits so that may be in my future if I get bored.
Lastly, I had my prep class. It was just me and the instructor today. I ended up picking a nice 12x7" slab from the GRF. The fish on it is pretty big. It's only the mouth to before the pectoral fins. I can't wait to show you gus a picture. I started out with just the pick to figure out where i wanted to start prepping. Then I used the dremel to whittle through a thick layer on top of the fish because I was too lazy to turn on the air compressor. I got accustomed to the microscope. It's useful! Next week I'm gonna use air abrasive I think. I'm getting my camera tomorrow so prepare yourself for pics next week!
Until then,
Emily
