My Room

jpevahouse

Photo of me from 1962 at 15 years old in my room with some of my stuff holding a replica human skull. I began collecting Indian relics at 5 years old and have a life long fascination with old stuff of all kinds, particularly bones even back then. The bottom shelf, not clearly visible in the photo, displays some of my Indian relics. The animal skeleton is of a bob cat which my brother and I found and I mounted. Perry County, Tennessee was a great place to live for my interests since the hills were cut through fossil bearing Silurian limestone and the fields along the Buffalo and Tennessee Rivers had abundant Indian village sites. We never ran out of stuff to do.

We were fearless. Cave exploring, even arrow head hunting could be dangerous since farmers often let boar hogs run loose in the pastures. Also, climbing on the limestone bluffs along the Buffalo and Tennessee Rivers, exploring the endless backwaters and sloughs, and then there was the rattle snakes and cotton mouths which were common to that area. Coming across a moonshine still while exploring for fossils could also be a dangerous endeavor. At least once my brother and I were shot at on a hillside with a great fossil outcropping.
