Astragalas, easy to be fooled

jpevahouse

A good example of a modern bone found eroded into a ravine cutting through late Cretaecous sediments. After careful thought, examination and the opinion of others more knowledgeable than myself the conclusion was the bone is within the last 100 years, household dumping along the ravine.

This astragalus belonged to either peccary or a pig, since I am unaware of peccaries in the NJ area, I would say that you are right. It is most likely Sus scrofa, meaning it could be no older than the 1500s.

I showed the bone to Dr Parris of the NJ State Museum last year. His opinion was domestic pig. The ravine has some evidence of old household dumping.

There is no evidence of the peccary in the fossil record of NJ.

Thanks for you comments.
