  1. I’ve decided to post this one separately. Very unusual composition. If you watch the video, you’ll see that light refracts off of tiny crystals in the center of each segment (which I’ve circled in red in another image). It’s hardly noticeable. The specimen is very smooth and rounded. Another member said in a different post of mine that it could possibly be an inoceramid hinge, though my own research resulted in nothing. I can’t find anything online that remotely resembles my specimen (inoceramid or otherwise). I found it at Post Oak Creek in Sherman, Texas. FullSizeRender.MOV

    Shark Teeth from Post Oak Creek

    I’d like for my Post Oak Creek collection identified (specifically the shark teeth), but I can’t find much information online about the species of shark whose teeth are found here (Post Oak Creek in Sherman, Texas). When I HAVE come across general information about the creek and other peoples findings online, there aren’t any pictures of the teeth or nobody else knows exactly what they have. It’s also hard to tell if I’m grouping them correctly, so I apologize if I’m mixing some species together. The longer teeth have very similar characteristics, but greatly differ in size. And the only teeth that I HAVE been able to identify are the ptychodus teeth (not pictured), but only because they’re so unusual in appearance. Excuse the quality of the images. I don’t feel like setting up my camera right now, but I do plan on taking clearer images once I’ve correctly identified each specimen.

    My latest find!

    My husband and I like to go on walks along the wooded dirt trails behind our home. Last winter, we stumbled upon a particular stretch of path. It was constructed using refractory bricks smack dab in the middle of the woods. It wasn’t until recently when we decided to revisit the area. One does not simply stumble upon an old brick path in the middle of the woods. It had to have once led somewhere. We did, in fact, find an old stone well nearby. Across from the well, there’s the foundation of a house that’s nothing but rubble. I also found an A&W Root Beer can amongst the rubble. It was the 1968 to 1995 A&W logo. Most of the bricks were branded, but I could hardly make out the wording. The name Louis was clear as day on quite a few of the smaller fragments, but the more intact bricks had lettering that was harder to read. I managed to find a single brick that wasn’t so weathered. I knelt down to read what was branded on it, but this little coral fragment caught my attention. It was wedged between the bricks in the center of the path, almost as if it were placed there intentionally. I don’t see how else it could have gotten there. After further inspection, the coral (a honeycomb coral) appears to be fused to an unidentifiable species of mollusk. Fossilized oysters and clams are common finds in my area, but this is the first fossilized coral I’ve found. FullSizeRender.MOV

    Introducing myself.

    A few months back, I made the decision to permanently deactivate my Facebook and Instagram. Too much drama. The only thing that I miss about social media are my groups. That’s why I’m here. I need to talk about my finds with people who share my love of fossil hunting. What better place than a forum? This one in particular always pops up when I research my finds. I just hope it’s active. It’s all about FaceBook, Instagram, and Twitter nowadays. Nobody uses forums anymore, at least nobody my age... My name is Chelsie. I’m 30. When I was little, I was obsessed with dinosaurs and dreamt of being a paleontologist. Sadly, I ended up in retail management. My hobbies include fossil hunting and rockhounding. I’ve found some pretty interesting, although basic marine finds in my own backyard. For that, I do still count myself lucky. My husband and I have found ammonites, an assortment of shark teeth, a few different oyster species, corals, and beautiful septarian fragments. These are all common finds here in North Texas.

    It looked similar to a photo l that I saw online of an egg. But I also read that it’s extremely rare to find.

    Possible Fossilized Rib (ID Help)

    Found this fossil in a riverbed in Fannin County (North Texas) while hunting for fossils from the cretaceous period. (This is a follow-up from the same trip as my previous post - thank you to those of you who helped ID the mosasaur vertebra! And also thank you for correcting my terminology on mosasaur vs mosasaurus ). I'm not totally sure what this is (at first I thought it was nothing too special - possibly just a very eroded Baculite as we were finding many of those in the area), but on closer inspection, there are fine striations on the fossil that make me think it is bone. My current guess (based on those striations and the longish/slightly curved shape of the fossil) is that it is a fragment of rib, and further, (based on the facts that everything else we were finding was from the cretaceous and that mosasaur are the only large marine vertebrate that I know of being regularly found in the area), that it is a fragment of mosasaur rib. However, I am not sure about this and am hoping for some more help on identifying what I've got here. I hope these photos are good enough to see the details (i've tried to shoot them in half-decent light). If you zoom in, you can see the striations I'm talking about fairly well. (See dime for scale). Here are both sides of the fossil Here are the ends And here is a closer shot of the more intact side So in summary, I'm wondering if I'm right (or even on the right track) that this is a fragment of mosasaur rib? And following that up, whether ribs are identifiable by speciesm (probably not, but worth a shot )? Final sub-question that is probably totally speculative, but I'm curious about: there are a lot of indentations and gouges in the fossil. Is it possible that these are marks from a predator and/or scavenger (e.g. sharks) chewing on the dead creature's carcass? Or is it more likely to just be erosion? Thanks for putting up with so many questions!
  8. I found this fossilized vertebra in a riverbed in Fannin County (North Texas) while hunting for fossils from the cretaceous period. My understanding is that the concave/convex ends of the vertebra indicate that it is from a mosasaurus, but I am very new to this so I don't have a lot of faith in my ID skills. If it is a mosasaurus bone, is there any way to determine species? I've read that Tylosaurus and Platecarpus are found in the area, but don't know if there are reliably identifiable differences in their vertebrae structures. Is this a mosasaurus vertebra, and if so, is there any way to determine species? Thanks in advance for your help : )

    Anomalies on Petrified log

    Back in August I was catching feeder fish in a wretched little Woodbine tributary when I pulled this out of the muck. It was black and limestone color with thick algae, it was unrecognizable as wood but there were holes and ripples that gave me hope. Hauling this (24 lbs) and my gear & fish was a challenge up a vertical bank and 100 yd walk through thick thorny brush for a 100 lb person, almost left it halfway back to car. After a good scrubbing it still looked like a chunk of water worn sediment and I deleted the first pic of top side, then I tried a new cleaning method I was using on ammonites that were badly stained and got great results. Pictures 1 & 2 show before and after on bottom side but the top was even worse. It won't win any beauty contest I was just happy it was wood. Thinking it was decaying wood and it is full of piddock clams, #5 shows one well. The things in question are 3 & 4, which I'm wondering could they be soft body fossils of Toredo worm? In pics of #4 the black object looks like part of the shell maybe, but #3 looks segmented like a caterpillar which Toredos are not, picture 5 shows one end of it above clam. So what could they be?

    A couple of tubular things

    Both of these were collected in Grayson marl, is the small one a calamite? Hadn't occurred to me they could be found there. The larger one was 2 straight pieces side by side but the host rock is so fragile and part of top layer crumbled and broke them. Have not seen any burrows in Grayson so not sure if that's what they are.

    Cretaceous crinoid columnal?

    Found this hunting new place at Woodbine/Grayson contact, there it was nestled in the lower layer of grey-blue marl sporting the same color. Last time I checked there weren't crinoids in Grayson, so how did it get there? Have only a handful of fossils this color from there including this bivalve I can't ID, or is it a brachiopod?
  24. I came across this place not too long ago and recently made another trip, I am in love with this site, the colors, the layers, the in your face geology, the fossils, couldn't ask for more. Pocket map says this area is intersection of Woodbine, Grayson, and QAL. Showing in pictures the series of hills running east to west, #1 west end #4 east end. and various shots closer. Forgot to take picture of first hill on western side there was only Woodbine exposure that had layers of intense purple sandstone and what I'm calling snowflake selenite. The far east side was only Woodbine but in the middle hills were several layers of Grayson, top one was more yellow soft and crumbly, below a layer of more white and harder then below that all shades of grey and blue. Along the very top of hills you can see the red Woodbine. Will make separate post for Grayson fossils there are too many pictures, fossils, and questions. This is great learning opportunity so any additional information will be appreciated. Not too many fossils from Woodbine but it's visually difficult for me, everything is red black orange and blends together. Found gastropod, ammonites and various oysters being eaten by selenite but I like the sparkle, and bivalve #6, is this Pinna? Picture #5 was just a single odd place with sand balls. Found what I'm calling chocolate selenite and big chunks of rock imbedded with bivalves and encrusted in white, assuming it's gypsum? I liked the contrast in colors. Including picture of everything found.

Last week I visited my little spot in the Britton formation for the first time since all the flooding rains, it's only a small strip about 20 yds long that's slowly eroding but I always find things. There were the usual baculites, ammonites and crabs, an Inoceramus and a few I'm not sure about. The crab that's circled doesn't look like the other Notopocorystes, it's too long, is it lobster? Then there's the little baculite packed rock that had 3 tiny ammonites, #3 I pried off, Mortoniceras? #2 scaphite or Placenticeras? #1 so small not sure it can be ID'd. #4 separate rock looks like squished Allocrioceras with smaller one beside it? Pics will probably end up out of order so numbered ones in question.
