    Fish and cetacean jaws for ID

    I found two fossilized jaw segments yesterday that I need help IDing, please. I believe the first is either barracuda or wahoo, but I've done a little research and am still not sure how to tell them apart. My guess is wahoo, based on the tooth thickness increasing as it gets closer to the root, but some descriptions I've seen of wahoo teeth describe them as "needle-like", which these are not. Jaw section is 50mm long. Tooth goes from about 1 mm thick at the point to about 5mm at the base. Found in an area that is heavily Oligocene but with a small amount of Miocene (coming from an overlying Pleistocene lag deposit). Jaw #2 I believe is cetacean... something like an echoventator. I previously found a similar one in the same creek, but the spacing between those teeth were greater (both have the double-root teeth). This creek is also Oligocene with some Miocene from overlying lag deposits. 62mm long and 32mm tall. Wet to show the double-root tooth sockets better: New jaw on left, other from same location on right: I hate to @ people if I don't have to but, from reading old posts, I think @Al Dente and @MarcoSr can probably ID wahoo vs. barracuda.     Oligocene of Washington

    Here's an aturia angusta nautiloid with some chunky calcite from the Lincoln Creek Formation in Washington state, US. Also, a recent paper on a bivalve of the same location, pliocardia? guthrieorum, named after my wife and myself by the author. We're aggressively searching for late Eocene and early Oligocene cetaceans, especially the odontocete variety. Maybe this will be our lucky year!

    Tooth or man-made object?

    I had a pretty good day of hunting yesterday and am planning to do a trip report, but I need help IDing one item first. When I first picked it up, I thought it was a odontocete tooth. Once I got home and cleaned it up, it looked like parts of it were peeling and there was white underneath. I have tried to peel it more, I have tried the flame test to see if it would melt or smell, but nothing seems to affect it. Any idea if this could be an odontocete or other tooth, or if it's man-made? Found in the Summerville area in a black-water river offshoot, where everything gets a black covering, but it doesn't normally peel like this. Have previously found odontocete teeth in the exact spot where I found this one. 16mm total length, "crown" is about 2mm thick. Thank you!

    Merycoidodontid Jaw Fragment

    This is a merycoidodontid jaw fragment from the Oligocene of South Dakota, but it hasn't been identified to genus/species level. The specimen is 24.5mm long and 32mm across. Thanks in advance for any proposed IDs Othniel Just to clarify you may have seen a fossil ID thread with similar pictures to this, also started by myself. However, as suggested by FossilDude19, I will be splitting them up so as to not restrict answers. If anyone could explain how I get rid of the old thread, that would be much appreciated as well.
  7. Hello everyone. I am after the ID of these solitary corals. Location: Eastern Bulgaria, Rhodope Mts, south of Kardzhali Age: Oligocene, did not manage to pinpoint the exact location on the geological map, due to poor quality map. As per a local expert, the horn-shaped coral is a Placosmiliopsis bilobatus and the age is Oligocene. The species is supposed to have polymorphy; some are roundish, while others form slightly the number 8. I found a topic on a Spanish forum but I fail to understand the key elements determining the species. Through the help of Google translate, I understood that I have to create cross sections (vertically? horizontally? I made both) but I do not understand what I should observe. (Spanish text in the end of this post) Additionally, as per minedat, the P. bilobatus is supposed to have gone extinct up to Priabonian. This is the reason I started searching since one fact is against the other. The horn-shaped coral is approx an inch in diameter and 1.25" height. The discoid coral has a diameter of 1.75" and 0.25" thick. Both were cleaned with toothbrush and KOH. @fifbrindacier said that @oyo and @HansTheLoser might be able to help on this topic. I would appreciate your opinion. Thank you! "Placosmiliopsis: columnella laminar profunda / Pattalophyllia: columnilla trabecular. This what it is supposed to be Placosmiliopsis bilobatus. There are some noumoulites or other foraminifera on top of it. I thought it would be fun to show off some of the deep sea marine gastropods I've found from 2 Lincoln Creek Formation exposures. Top: Whitneyella lincolnensis x 2, Priscofusus chehalisensis Middle : Turricula washingtonensis x 5, moon snail x 4 (either Natica sp. or Polinices sp., hard for me to tell) Bottom: Exilia lincolnensis x 3, moon snails x 2

    Fossil hunting trip Nebraska

    Hello this is my second post on the forum I might be going on fossil dig this summer at my heritage guest ranch in Nebraska badlands and I was wondering what carnivores I can potentially find, and what are some of the most common finds in the carnivore and herbivore group? Also, anything else I need to know before doing this fossil hunt?
  12. Normally I would use the Burke's paleontology database to ID these, but they have informed me that it may be months before they can get their database system back up and running again. Lincoln Creek Formation, Grays Harbor County WA, oligocene. Largest one measures around 2 cm.

    Carolinochelys wilsoni

    I found a really interesting bone a week ago. Tonight I found a Research paper. Oligocene pancheloniid sea turtles from the vicinity of Charleston South Carolina U S A A Map of where these Sea Turtles were found: A photo picture of a right Humerous of a turtle named Carolinochelys wilsoni. It is approximately 16 cm in length, My find, basically a distal half of a Sea Turtle humerus is 8.2 cm. I am feeling good tonight. Sharing the joy. Morning coming quick.     Some White River Formation Fossils For ID

    Hello everyone! Earlier this year, in August, I went fossil hunting in the White River Formation. This jaw was one of the first specimens I found. Unfortunately when I found it, it was actually in better shape... When I found it it had obviously been out in the weather for quite some time, and so it was kind of fragile. I was not thinking, and just took it out of the ground, hoping I could put most of the pieces together later. I know it was a dumb decision, and I won't do it again (hopefully...). Along the way, I lost some parts, and so now it is not near as complete as it was. I am thinking it looks like Archaeotherium, but just thought I would ask for some other opinions. I don't know if it is possible to ID it down to species, because it is not super complete, but I would at least like to know what genus it is from.   15. These two (partial) bones were collected two summers ago (2021) on private land in Weld County, Colorado. They’re from a super fossiliferous bit of exposure which, based on the Oreodont fauna, is likely to be part of the Poleslide Member, which dates to the early Oligocene. These bones have puzzled me since I collected them, and I had for quite a while hypothesized that they must be some sort of ungulate metatarsal. I decided to pull them out again tonight, and having more experience with osteology generally I have decided that these look decidedly avian - specifically, the proximal ends of a right tarsometatarsus. The White River Formation has a rather diverse formally described avifauna: Benton et al. (2015) lists six genera in five families along with several different morphologies of bird eggs in The White River Badlands: Geology and Paleontology, however only one family (the Bathornithidae) has more than one described genus. Bird fossils are well-documented from the WRF, and incidentally quite a few avian holotypes have been described from the White River Formation in Colorado, so perhaps the preservational bias favors them more in that general region. However, bird fossils are simply generally rare in the fossil record due to their delicate nature, so I thought I’d post on the forum before I make a (relatively) extraordinary claim. Now, these two bones aren’t in any way associated, but they’re the exact same sort of bone. They’re identical (with the exception of the shorter one being slightly larger) - same bone, same taxon (as far as I can tell, the shorter one has some weathering). This is what puts me off even more - what are the odds that not only did I come across bird fossils, but that I independently found the exact same end of the exact same bone from the exact same avian taxon in the same week? Tarsometatarsus bones do seem to be a fairly commonly preserved isolated element for fossil birds, many genera are described based of a single tarsometatarsus and the same summer I found these I happened to find an avian tarsometatarsus in the Hell Creek Formation. But it would still be odd. Here are the pictures: I should also add that these bones are in fact thin-walled and hollow, though getting the camera to focus on the broken ends is difficult. But that doesn’t automatically make them avian, bones are fairly frequently hollowed out by simple decay. Below is an image from Benton et al. (2015), with an illustration of the holotype tarsometatarsus of Badistornis aramus, an extinct relative of the living limpkin, for comparison: My bones actually compare quite well to this illustration, though there are differences so I wouldn’t assign them to this genus/species even if I could confirm that they are bird tarsometatarsi. I also don’t think that they’re Bathornithid bones, even though those are the most famous birds from this rock unit. Of the genera from the WRF only Bathornis has a known tarsometatarsus, and it’s both morphologically very different and much larger than my bones. I’ve also ruled out the Galliformes and Falconiformes (two bird orders with representatives in the WRF), again assuming these are avian bones. I think that it compares best with wading birds such as herons and, indeed, limpkins. But this is mostly informed speculation I admit. So does anyone have any thoughts? Is there a more obvious answer for what this bone could be, or does it truly have avian affinities in your opinion? Looking forward to hearing everyone’s thoughts. References: Benton, R.
