So - I’ve spent the last 3 days hunting in the Peace, to a decent bit of success! But there’s story behind each day. So Friday I go, and maybe an hour before I was planning on leaving, my shovel breaks. Sucked, I left early. Get home, only to realize I left my sifter and probe at the ramp. Get up the next day, head back out, bringing with me my backup PVC sifter… my sifter and probe are gone. Spend the day hunting, come home, build a new sifter, and probe. Wake up today, head out to the river to try out the new sifter. Anyway! Onto the finds! Apologies in advance, there’s a LOT. Starting off, as always, Megs. Did pretty well this time, couple of REALLY small Megs, and one that’s just under 2” that’s really nice. Still nothing over 2”. Next up, a right M1/M2 Equus tooth, this is one of my fav finds from the last 3 days - I’m thinking it’s associated with the left m1/m2 I found a few weeks ago - same spot. Next are fossil deer teeth and one modern one: Then a partial llama molar: Two half tapir teeth, cause I can’t find a full one apparently: Tiny dolphin tooth and a whale tooth tip: Gator and Croc teeth - the bottom left tooth is a HUGE gator tooth, and is pretty much perfect, just a little worn: The nicer shark teeth I found, including 2 C. Hastalis, some huge Hemipristis lowers, a sand tiger with both its cusps, and another sand tiger that’s slightly patho - the blade curves to the left: Fish teeth, gar fish scales, and puffer mouth plates, including one barracuda tooth that’s over an inch: Dolphin jaw bone: Tortoise spur in the top left, antler for the other 3 - bottom right is a piece that would connect to the base of the skull: This gorgeous fossilized snake vert: Ear Bones. I found a LOT: Ray stuff - top row is 2 nearly complete mouth plates - as in, the entire plate, not just a row, followed by a whole BUNCH of denticles, and some barbs: Mammoth tooth frags and one bit of tusk: And finally, Meg frags, and then all the other teeth I found: Can’t wait to do it all again!

While I’m taking all the pics needed for my trip report, I figured I’d start by getting IDs for a few things so - one tooth that I’m mostly sure is horse, and then some bone bits! 1) Tooth: 2) Bone #1: 3) Bone #2: 4) Bone #3: Thanks in advance!

I have tried to have a search on the forum before posting this but there is soooo many posts on rays it is a long job! So... I have received some ray barbs and mouth plates from @Meganeura and I was just wondering if anyone could let me know the age and species of the common fossil find in the Peace river, Florida? I can post a few pictures if you want but they really are just the generic ones readily found! @Shellseekermaybe you can help?

In trying to find an ID for an ear bone I found yesterday, I stumbled upon a thread here discussing different sizing of dolphin ear bones in Florida - and wanted to ask if anyone ( @Boesse) might know or be able to ID these! 1) So this first one is my biggest at 44.5mm long: 2) This next one is 32mm long: Comparison of the 2: 3 + 4) Then I’ve got these 2 that are the same size, 25mm: All 4 together: And also I know the bottom of these 2 is whale - but is the top also whale? Thanks in advance!

So I’ve found some strange bones that I’ve been identifying as Tilly Bones - Hyperostosis fish verts - but I wanted to confirm since I’ve found varying kinds. So these are 2 that don’t have the usual double bump on them: 1) 2)

Thanks for accepting me into your group. I’m mostly interested in hunting in the Peace River and sure would appreciate any suggestions y’all have. I’ve been wanting to do this for years and never have been able to talk anyone else into taking the plunge. Well, I finally have a couple of friends who said okay let’s do this so I’m going to what I can to learn what where and when until the “season” comes back. Looking forward to one day getting my Meg tooth to brag on.

Peace River, Florida - July 31st, 2022 - SO MANY COOL THINGS!

So today was a day. Came out to the spot from Thursday, using my inflatable kayak, and spent from 8am to 3:30pm digging. And it was a veryyyyy worthwhile hunt. So to start off, Megs. I actually found some! They’re all sub 2”, in fact one of them has a slant height of 0.5”, and it’s NOT a posterior Meg. I didn’t even realize they could be that small. And yes, one of them is completely enamel-worn, which is neat, and the one to the right of that has a pathological root! I also found 65 - yes, 65 - fragolodons, though I’m only including the nicer pieces here: Next up are 2 separate Tapir partials. One is most of an upper molar, the other is half a normal tooth (I thought these things were supposed to be rare?): Next up, Earbones! 1 whale, 2 Dolphin Periotic. The Periotics look like they have faces on em. Found a nice inch-long piece of tusk: This sizeable mammoth tooth fragment, alongside a whole bunch of other pieces, not pictured: A tortoise spur ( @Brandy Cole it actually looks like one this time!) Dolphin jaw bone pieces: First 3 from what I assume to be the smaller dolphin who’s name scapes me, and the last one from what I assume to be from the Long-Beaked dolphin due to the size: This I believe is a broken juvenile whale vert: This I believe to be a very small whale tooth: @Shellseeker Any idea what species? Then (Had to go inside cause it was WAY too hot to continue) we have 3 different Tilly bones: 3 gator teeth: An astragalus from… I’m not sure. Small deer? And finally, with the exception of the sting Ray barbs, barracuda teeth, sawfish rostrum, turtle shell, and the usual shark teeth, here’s a gar scale and 3 ray dermal denticles: I will ABSOLUTELY be coming back here - and if the weather plays nice, it'll be later this week!

I found this in the Peace River in early June, I’ve tried researching it but honestly have no clue where to start. I’m giving it away to a family tomorrow here in Orlando and I’d love to at least tell them a direction to look for identification. The family are two twin girls 5, and boy who is 7, and the parents are 2 of Orlando’s finest. They made me a drawing which says misD ric after giving them a few fossils this summer. @Shellseeker @hemipristis Any help would be appreciated Rick

So finally getting around to doing this trip report now that I’ve got some ID’s in. Combining yesterday as well, since yesterday was kinda-sorta a dud, but not wholly. Went out to one of Peace River’s tributaries not expecting much beyond some orange teeth, and walked away with a ridiculous amount of cool finds. So to start off! My first ever River Meg! I say first ever as it’s my first that’s more than 75% complete - enough to be considered a tooth over a fragment. It’s most likely a posterior tooth, given the cusp and size! Next up is my first ever Tapir tooth - I believe it’s half the crown. Then my first and second ever Rhino teeth: Followed by what I believe is a fossilized bobcat premolar: Then my first and second ever thresher shark teeth: Then a symphyseal (Or pathological?) Lemon Shark tooth: And a symphyseal Hemipristis Serra: A partial horse tooth I’m pretty sure I broke into 3: A shark vert: A cetacean vert (Just the centrum): And this large burrfish/parrot fish mouth plate: Plus a whole bunch of other teeth I found. I will leave you all with this beautiful picture of the creek I took!

Home and settled, have 3 more teeth I’d like ID’s on before I do a trip report. 1) Very obviously a herbivore tooth - half of one anyway. 2) Tooth of some kind with enamel with vertical Hunter-Schreger bands 3) Looks like a Dugong tooth fragment kinda, but could also be a rock 1) Herbivore tooth: 2) Enamel banded tooth: Top: Root: View of enamel: 3) Dugong?

I have been chatting back and forth with @Meganeuraabout how he works Peace River in Florida and I quite like the idea of taking my kayak and having a day or two sifting etc. So I was wondering if anyone knows of a similar area in the UK? I have had a google(or actually an ecosia!) about it and only came up with sites on the coast that are all cliff erosion sites and a few disused quarries. Fingers crossed

Made a quick trip to a new spot today with my wife and some friends to test out my sifter and to try this new spot. Only spent ~2 hours there, so didn’t find anything too amazing, but my god, the colors! Picture doesn’t do em justice but they’re orange and absolutely gorgeous. Also found a part of a whale ear bone: And picked up this shell in the parking lot: Definitely planning on going back next weekend for longer, and with a probe! @digit

Found a couple of interesting things that I would like to see what others think of. Have 2 what I believe are whale teeth but are very different so would like to know if others have any insight on their previous owners and a mammal tooth that the closest thing I can come up with is a bison premolar ? The whale teeth are 8.5 and 6cm in length respectively. The smaller curved one has an open root and the larger one does not or it has been fractured off.All were found in the Peace River. Thanks!

I had been watching the Peace River levels daily and when they got to a workable level decided now is the time to go and decided to hit the river on July 5th. After the holiday the river was deserted and I had the place to myself - didn’t see another sole all day. I wanted to go back to a site that I had found a good mixture of mammal fossils and alot of nice sharks teeth ,but only meg fragments, on a previous trip so I was pleased when I was rewarded with 2 decent meg teeth. The day was hot but not unbearable and the steady stream of finds kept me busy and I probably let my guard down a little too much when I noticed what we call here in Florida “ a little leezard “ about a 5 foot alligator had gotten between me and the shore. Normally I wouldn’t even consider one that size a threat but I think this little guy or gal was actually sizing me up and certainly was not scared of me - I was pretty much done by that point anyway so I left the brassy reptile to it’s own devices and moved down the river a bit. At the end of the day the River gods blessed me with broad range of finds - a couple whale teeth and a mammal tooth that I would like to see what others think about and will post in the I’d sectionP ,a beautiful equus lower M3, some interesting bone pieces, glyptodont scutes, a nice piece of ivory tusk, alligator teeth, and a boatload of sharks teeth - fun day on the river !

So in my eternal hunt to find a complete Meg in the Peace (Or mostly, I’m willing to take a 75%+ complete at this point), I took my new inflatable kayak to the Peace River to try some spots I’ve been to before, now that I have access. I’m not sure I’d consider it a particularly successful day, despite the River water levels cooperating. I came away with 30 (Yes, 30!!!) fragolodons, the most complete being a half. Also including a very large root that looks like it would’ve belonged to a 4”+ Meg. Which is… very saddening. I did find a rooted dolphin tooth among other cool things, so here they are: 1) The Frags: The very large root alone: 2) I don’t normally grab Dugong bone having so much of it - but this piece is 6”, and the longest I’ve found: 3) Turtle shell as always. Bottom left is my fav piece I’ve ever found - I think it’s directly from the end of the shell? 4) Piece of antler, Shark vert, and a piece of tusk I found: 5) Interestingly shaped bones I found. Not sure what from: 6) Sawfish Rostrum, 2 Croc teeth, a Barracuda tooth, and part of a deer tooth: 7) Stingray barbs and half of a dermal denticle: 8) Mammoth teeth frags, still looking for a piece that’s not just one thin piece: Continued below.

So did some 4th of July hunting today - found a bunch of stuff and I’ll do the trip report tomorrow. But I need ID’s on 2 teeth: 1) The first is a rooted tooth. I was thinking Dolphin or Whale? Really have no clue. 2) I’m guessing it’s horse, but I wanted to confirm. 1) Rooted tooth: 2) Horse?

Found this in the Peace Friday. After some searching I believe it's a Tapir P2. If so a first for me, never found a Tapir like this. If I'm wrong let me know.

So 2 more things I wanted to ask for IDs on. First is what I originally thought was Dugong bone - but now that it’s dried I can see concentric rings in it - which makes me think tusk? But no Schreger lines. The other is a piece of bone with an odd shape. 1) Possible tusk? 2) Bone @Shellseeker @Harry Pristis Either of you guys know? Thanks in advance!

So 3… specimens from Peace River that I’ve posted before but never got any ID’s on that I figured I’d repost and ask again - consolidated to one post. Not sure what any of the 3 are. 1) This feels like it could be a tooth? 2) Not a single idea what it could be. 3) Not sure if it’s a mineral like chert or mammoth enamel or something else. As always, any help is appreciated!

I had found this tooth a while ago and was just now realizing it wasn’t in fact a shark tooth like I had originally thought - or at least I believe it isn’t, so any ID is appreciated! There’s very slightly worn away serrations on the blade near the root, the camera didn’t pick ‘em up. Also found this piece of bone (I think it’s bone, honestly could be rock) that looked pretty interestingly shaped, so I wanted to get an ID (or be told it’s rock if that’s the case!) 1) Tooth: 2) Bone?

So I was originally planning on going kayaking to find my own spot today on the peace but the kayaking plans fell through, so I had to sadly resort to a boat ramp. Public area, heavily hunted. Still, came away with some decent stuff! To start off, the biggest and most complete Meg I’ve ever pulled out of the Peace (No, I still haven’t found one that’s got even 75% of it left ) This is probably the coolest pattern on a shark tooth I’ve seen on this Tiger Shark tooth: Next is the nicest mammoth molar fragment I’ve found, with a bunch of other frags from today: This absolutely gorgeous turtle shell: Some horse teeth frags: A really nice bivalve: A very small armadillo scute: Some petrified wood: And finally, a half of a shark vert, a sawfish rostrum tooth, a deer antler piece, a fish vert, a few croc teeth, a gator tooth, and some cool bone pieces:

Back on the peace today, found a bunch of mammoth tooth frags and whatever this other thing is, and I’m not sure if the frag IS a frag. 1) Mammoth frag? 2) Whatever this is, maybe it’s chert, maybe it’s a fossil?
