MateuszN06 posted a topic in Is It Real? How to Recognize Fossil Fabrications
Hello two days ago I bought a Majungasaurus teeth. For me it is real teeth but I have to ask you about because I'm not sure (of course I want to be sure). Can you please tell is it real teeth ? Thank you for all of your answers on this topic- 5 replies

Every year at the Denver fossil show it seems like I pick up some unidentified Kem Kem material. This is because for one it’s cheap, but also because it’s kinda fun to investigate this material. Here are eight pieces I picked up as a bulk set. I have some idea about identification on each of these but would love to hear other’s input. In the following pictures I have the top row being archosaur fossils and the bottom row being fish fossils. My guesses: 1. Caudal(?) vertebra centrum. Croc or theropod, but probably croc. 2. Croc dorsal vertebra 3. Croc centrum 4. Theropod pedal phalanx. Specifically, the distal-most phalanx of toe 1 (the “dew claw”). Narrowest ID I think I could guess we would be Ceratosauria indet., should probably be labeled as Theropoda indet. 5. Two fused fish vertebrae. Are these identifiable any more than this? 6. Gar or gar-like vertebra 7. Chondrichthyan fish vertebra. Maybe Onchoptistis numida? Can that determination even be made? 8. A gigantic ganoid scale. Any guesses just based on size? I’m unfamiliar with all the monster fish in this rock unit. Thanks :)

This is a digital study of the head of Rugops primus. I screwed up some of the teeth (too recurved). I really should know better, haha.

Another Kem Kem tooth (17 mm). Pretty sure it is Abelisaurid, but it does have some noticable differences with my other Abelisaurid teeth. It is less compressed and one side of the tooth (the lingual?) is pretty flat, while the other side is not. Am I right to assume these are probably just positional differences? Could this be a more anterior tooth? Thanks!

Since I bought a couple of (very nice) Abelisaurid teeth from Kem Kem, which I initially thought where Dromaeosaurid, I am on the lookout for potential Dromaeosaurid teeth from Kem Kem. I think this tooth (1.9 cm) might be a candidate, but I have been wrong before. What are your thoughts? Should I ask for better pictures of the serrations or a serratiom count?

I recently bought these three little teeth (between 1.7 and 2.0 cm long). They are from the Kem Kem Beds in Morocco. They were advertised as Dromaeosaurus teeth, but I know that is not very likely or well supported. I think the first two teeth might be Dromaeosaurid (mesial and distal serrations are different and the tip of the teeth extend past the base) and the third one might be Abelisaurid (distal side is almost straight). But I could very well be wrong, so I would like to hear your opinions. Thanks!

Hi! I've been eyeing these supposed Abelisaurid teeth from Morocco (Kem Kem beds?), but I'm unsure if they are what they're labelled as. Are these two Abelisaur teeth? Or are do they belong to another theropod in the formation? (Mostly being confused with how one differentiates KK "raptor" teeth from true abelisaur teeth) Tooth A: Images 1 to 4 Tooth B: Images 5 to 8 I've read @Troodon's fantastic guide to Kem Kem teeth. However, as a very amateur fossil collector, I'm only able to identify but the only feature I am able to identify as abelisaurid is the mesial side being curved, and the distal side being straight (especially clear on Tooth A). So, this theropod tooth came in a lot of a bunch of other teeth I bought as part of a box lot of about 20 Kem Kem theropod teeth. Most of it was in pretty bad condition, and there wasn't really provenance attached to them, but I paid literally pocket change for them. But to get back on point, I wasn't sure if this was an Abelisauridae, or a Carcharodontosaurus, possibly an indeterminate theropod. My gut feeling is that it's an Abelisauridae, but I'm not sure, Abelisaurid teeth tend to be much more easily recognizable, and I have a lingering doubt on this one. Measurements are in centimeters. Assuming I did the serration density count right, both sides are 12/5mm or 2.4/mm

Hi all. I have this tooth that i think is either an abelisaurid tooth or a carcharodontosaurus premax. Does anyone here have an idea which it could be? The tooth is a bit over 2 inches in length. It's from the Kemkem i think

Hello, I have recently received photos of this tooth. It is labeled as a Majungasaurus crenatissimus tooth. The location is stated as Maevarano, Majunga, Madagascar. To me, it does show morphological characteristics of being an Abelisaurid tooth, such as a distal edge that is not recurved. What are your thoughts on this?

A few questions on abelisaurids and majungasaurus crenatissimus
Pterygotus posted a topic in Questions & Answers
Hello everyone. Recently, my my friend told me that abelisaurids aren’t determinable by their teeth. Is this true? Also, recently is saw some majungasaurus crenatissimus 3/4” teeth for sale. Does anyone know the rarity of these? And also, is magungotholus the same as majungasaurus? Thank you.- 4 replies

Hey everyone, There are a bunch of teeth here, a mix of Dromeausaur and Abelisaurid, and I was wondering if you guys could identify which is which. Not everyone has to be identified, but one or two would be nice. Thanks!
