I bought this online and they have 100 percent positive feed back. I can return it if its fake. I was told by a local rock hound that if it has an insect in the amber its 99 times out of 100 fake. I don't have it yet its out of Lithuania and will not be here for a few weeks. I can do the salt water test and ultra violet test but wondered what you guys thought visually. So, I was going through my rock collection, just going through memories, because the guy who gave me all the rocks died in 2018. I found these at the bottom of the box. I remember he did not give these to me. In fact, I found these somewhere in Idaho, but I can’t remember exactly where. They look like amber, so I shone my UV light on them. Sure enough, they passed that test. I am posting pictures under regular light and UV light. I am pretty sure it’s amber, but I want a second opinion. What do you think? Jared

Proterosceliopsidae are parasitoid wasps that lay their eggs on or in the bodies of other arthropods, sooner or later causing the death of these. This is a female. Taxonomy according to Fossilworks.org. Diagnosis for the family Proterosceliopsidae according to Talamas et al. 2019, p. 20: “Antenna with 14 or 15 antennomeres; malar sulcus present (Fig. 7); facial striae absent (Fig. 7); malar striae absent (Fig. 7); pronotal cervical sulcus present as a furrow of fine setation associated with glandular excretion (Figs 16, 48–49, 51–53, 59); mesopleuron with transepisternal line and mesepimeral sulcus (Figs 16, 51–53, 59, 63); T3–T5 and S3–S5 anteriorly with depressions associated with glandular excretion (Figs 29, 34, 56, 58, 62).” Several very similar looking species have been described from amber deposits in Myanmar: P. ambulata, P. plurima, P. torquata, P. masneri, P. nigon and P. wingerathi. A more exact assignment is not possible for me. Identified by oilshale as Proterosceliopsis sp. using Talamas et al. 2019. References: Ortega-Blanco J., McKellar R. C,, Engel M. S. (2014): Diverse scelionid wasps in Early Cretaceous amber from Spain (Hymenoptera: Platygastroidea). Bulletin of Geosciences 89: 553–571. https://doi.org/10.3140/bull.geosci.1463 . Talamas, E. Really beefed up my collection this year: Amber: Spent a while with my trusty loupe combing through Chiapas amber sold by the gram and found a very uncommon flower petal. The seller took a moment to offer up a page on his phone about the healing properties of amber, and he gave me a polite nod and laugh when I said I'm more interested in the scientific properties. I like dead stuff. Big Claw: Always wanted a thick beefy claw! Labeled as a Carch claw from Kem Kem but after reading some of @Troodon's posts it could be a Spino or generic theropod. Really love the shape of this thing. Crab: Unfortunately about 20% of the crab's lil' butt was crushed sometime between purchasing and driving home. He's so delicate. There's a nice interior view of the underside of the carapace now, though. Any info about this guy would be appreciated! Skinny Theropod Claw: A little rough around the edges but I was really drawn to the curvature and sharpness of this one. Labeled as just "theropod" so I'm not sure if it's possible to tell what it's from. I can post more photos for identification.

I recently found a piece of petrified wood that has amber bubbling on the top and embedded into the piece. I found it in a region where people have told me there is no petrified wood. I know that it is. I have seen quite a few pieces of petrified wood from Arkansas and a few with amber embedded. This was found in Wisconsin in the Mississippi river valley. Any thoughts?

This was given to my parents by a friend about 38 years ago. He was a gemologist and my parents had purchased quite a few items in his store throughout the years. It was a going away gift when they were leaving the Vail Valley, Colorado. It's been sitting in storage until last year. Since I've had it, I've gotten a lot of scrutiny and assumptions of it being a fake or whatever. I know it's real and significant. Any thoughts from members would be so appreciated. I'm stuck and don't know where to go from here. Specs: 2.2 inches in length and weighs 19.87 grams.

Hi everyone. I've lived in the Willamette Valley all my life. Been a rockhound all my life love fossils, rocks and anything geology! I LOVE petrified wood and Amber.. I love finding the imprint of leaves on rock but I don't know what this is all called.. I am not sure what ANY of my finds are called. All my life when my family and friends and I would go camping or on outdoor events when the rest of the crowd was socializing or swimming in the creeks and rivers, I would be digging around some hillside scratching away for rocks and fossils.. I don't even keep them all. Or I'd be overtaken. Well, I give most of them away to kids, hoping it will spark an interest in something more than video games and Facebook. I'm not educated and I don't hunt for so much as I just come across interesting things. But I would like to know of some interesting places to go to find fossils and the like. Or Amber. And I AM curious about their nature and as I said I have no formal education on these things so I thought it might be interesting to find out what some of these things are or if their fossils at all. Thank you.

Hi, Purchased this Baltic Amber from Lithuania. Tried the black light test and the very clear amber turns opaque cream like color. Please see pics. Is this possibly fake? Thanks!- 6 replies

Hello again! I was wondering if anyone had suggestions for places in the north east US (around PA) that I could research? As was suggested to me, I’ve narrowed down the things I’d like to collect. I’m really interested in fossils that.. well look like things. Don’t get me wrong, shells and crinoids are exciting! But I’d be so jazzed to have fish, crustaceans, insects, or plants. Anomalocaris are so rad, though I fully understand that those are hard to find so I’m going to focus on other stuff for now lol. Maybe someday. My dad in particular wanted me to ask if anyone knew of any east coast places to find ants. I saw posts about an amber site in NJ but my understanding is that it’s pretty well picked through. He and I are going to the Montour pit next weekend to look for trilobites but I thought I’d ask for stuff he’s into. I’m going to be doing more research when I get home (I’m on mobile atm), but I’d love to pick your brains in the meantime! Thanks so much as always!

Authentic Burmese amber?
Nichet1122 posted a topic in Is It Real? How to Recognize Fossil Fabrications
I collected burmese amber. Surprisingly it had dinosaur feather. But I'm worried if this burmese amber is real. How to identify real amber? I heard real thing floats in salt water, after doing that, it really did. Is there any other way to identify real one? -
Hello all, I would like to add Amber to my fossil collection but i am lost online due to all the concern about fake Amber. Could anyone recommend a reputable site or person to purchase from? Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated.

So, a little bit about my situation. I was on an auction, and I was able to get this piece of “authentic Dominican Amber with a zacryptocerus ant.” I know what you’re thinking, I probably should’ve posted this before I got it. However, I couldn’t because it was an auction that was ending very quickly. I didn’t have time. I took a gamble and got it. It arrived today, and I would like to know how I can tell if it is real or fake. Can someone help me out? Some details so far, it weighs 1.3 grams, and is 1 inch long. Jared

Not sure if this amber is actually amber
KompsFossilsNMinerals posted a topic in Is It Real? How to Recognize Fossil Fabrications
Hi everyone, this is a piece of "amber" I bought a little while back. Not entirely sure if it's real so I thought I'd check here. It fluoresces green under a UV light and sort of smells sappy when pricked with a hot pin. Also included are some microscopic photos of the insect inclusions.- 16 replies

Hello, I would like to share with the forum some amber specimens I possess. These fossils are encased in burmite, amber dated to ~99 million years ago. Anyone else have some?

Greetings, dear forum participants. I would like to welcome everyone to discuss a sample of Baltic amber with a possible animal fingerprint. Place of origin Baltic Sea coast. The age of the find is unknown. Areas highlighted in the photo, presumably the animal's fingerprints. Between the possible prints there is an imprinted structure, presumably animal fur. In addition to photographs, I made a video showing how I remove a sample form from amber. ***Translation from Russian using google translator.
