Cretaceous Burmite: Evidence for a Remarkable Predator Prey Relationship
Biotalker posted a topic in General Fossil Discussion
An unusual type of beetle called Cascomastigus monstrabilis, of the subfamily Scydmaeninae or ant-like stone beetles, has a remarkable adaptation of their antennae. The eyelash looking structures called setae give the antennae the ability to serve as a trap to catch their prey, the tiny and numerous Collembola or springtails. The clublike maxilla palps may help to bring them to the beetles jaws. They range from 6-9mm long. -
