    Late Jurassic finds

I spent another day at the Kimmeridgian site in the Upper Danube Valley near Beuron the other day. I had taken my camera along in order to take some shots, but I ended up making so many good finds that I forgot to get it out. Sorry bout that. One great thing about this location is that the finds are easy and quick to prep, so at least I can show you some of the finds. Aspidoceras sp. Ataxioceras (Parataxioceras) lothari Ataxioceras (Parataxioceras) planulatum Taramelliceras (Metahaploceras) nodosiusculum and Glochiceras sp

    Split Shift

I worked another split shift today, so I decided to use the 4 hours in between to visit the site in the ditch at the side of the road in the Danube valley once again. No sense in driving home and back again when your tools are anyway in the trunk. Rain had been forecast for the afternoon, but it looked ok for the time being, so off I went. It's about a 3/4 hour drive and everything was looking good until about 15 minutes before arrival when suddenly over the last hill there were dark clouds with even more darkness below them looming on the horizon. Good thing I brought my raincoat and rubber b
  8. I've just added two sponges to my collection which I found recently in the Kimmeridgian Lochen Formation in the upper Danube Valley near Beuron. The first is the appropriately named Melonella radiata and the second is a Trochobolus texatus.

    Cylindrophyma sp. (Zittel 1878)

    From the album: Sponges

20x3.5cm. Calcified preservation. Divisum zone, Kimmeridgian, upper Jurassic. Found near Beuron in the upper Danube Valley.
  15. Limestone mold of the phragmocone.
  16. Limestone mold. Practically complete.
  17. Just about complete. One can differentiate between phragmocone and body chamber on hand of the suture lines.
  18. This little guy is practically complete.
  19. Limestone mold with glauconite. Phragmocone.
  20. Limestone mold. Practically complete with part of the lappet.
  21. Limestone mold. Orthaspidoceras is a synonym for this genus.
  22. Limetone mold. An almost complete specimen. Another half a whorl is missing.
  23. Limestone mold. Garnierisphinctes can be distinguished from Crussoliceras by its finer ribbing which continues farther along the whorls as by the latter. The rib-splitting over the venter is also more variable, particularly on the body chamber. This specimen is far from complete, but at least the first part of the body chamber is preserved.
  24. From the album: Late Jurassic Ammonites from Southern Germany

15cm. Internal mold. Lower Kimmeridgian from the upper Danube valley.
  25. Limestone mold with phragmocone and part of the body chamber. The sutures are strongly pronounced on this specimen. The green color is the result of a fine layer of glauconite, an iron compound found often in sediments.
