    Hello. New guy

Hello, new to the forum. Took the kids to Big Brook NJ. Had a great time. We have since been back a few times. Really enjoyed discovering history. Wondering if their are any groups or clubs that get together locally for hunts. I'd be looking to stay realatively close to home in South Jersey. I had a few finds I couldn't match up with anything I'm going to post in the ID section. Good hunting everyone, Jason

    Cretaceous bone

Recently I purchased a collection of shark teeth from Big Brook, NJ. This specimen came with it. I think it is a reptile humerus, however, it doesn't look like turtle/crocodile bones. I have no idea who it may come from - mammal/lizard/dinosaur? Sorry for the image quality.

    Big Brook I.d.

Found at Big Brook this summer. Can anyone tell me what these fossils are?
  4. I'm sure these are just rocks but looking for people to educate me as to why they look the way they do. If they appear to be anything else let me know.. these are #1 , #2 #3 #4 and #5 (two pics of each) #6 and #7 Lastly, a modern bone..probably a bird?

Mystery Vert From Big Brook in N.J.

I have been working a Cretaceous site in Big Brook in Monmouth County in New Jersey for many Years now and found a lot of stuff in the past but never seen this little vert before and I have really now clue what it is... So any input or help would be great. The vert measures 15mm at it longest point.

    ID needed, please, newbie

I am aware that many of the weird lumps and bumps of the iron heavy rock formations in Big Brook make some things that look like fossils that arent. Probably the bulk of these are such. However, im very new at this and I would like to know if any of my guesses are correct. I would be grateful if anyone would help me ID these. ( keep in mind that these are from several trips to Big Brook and this is the entire groups' ( 5 ppl 2x) fossils. We are law abiding and only took the limit each visit, we'd like there to be fossils for people to find for a long time there) fossil one: because of the shiny black on it and its weird shape, i thought it may be a fish tooth? like a drumfish. but it looks wrong. fossil two: really degraded squid guard? fossil 3: probably nothing. i thought it was something because of the uniform breakage in the back fossil 4: i thought this was nothing until i cleaned it off and saw the greyish stuff under the clay fossil 5: again i thought it might look like a drumfish tooth but then i bought it home and looked at the computer images and im pretty sure its not a thing. fossil 6: is that a tooth? fossil 7: is this just a clump of rock and mud? fossil 8: I saw mentioned somewhere on the forum a similar find and someone said it might be like shrimp poop? is it? fossil 9: piece of squid guard? fossil 10: idk what it is. it looks like burrows. but not. fossil 11: a tooth, for sure but not sure what? fossil 12: nada or the tiniest squid guard eva ( included bc its a six yr olds find) thank you in advance for any help you choose to lend me.

    Rotten Looking Thing

Found two tooth-looking things at big brook. The small black one i am leaning toward mosasaur but no clue on the bigger tan one. Maybe a bigger mosasaur or xiphactinus fang? What do you all think. Thank you for any help!

    Need help identifying this

My son and I found this in Big Brook, NJ. That area has fossils from the Cretaceous and Pleistocene periods. Need help identifying what it is.
  10. Hey all! The family and I are planning on venturing out of our Maryland comfort zone and are planning a trip to Big Brook in the coming weeks. I was just curious as to whether or not dogs were allowed in the park with you while fossil hunting. I am assuming it would be ok, but haven't been able to find any information. Thanks for your input!

    Big brook mystery tooth

Hello all, was wondering if this is a fish tooth or something more interesting? I haven't seen anything like it before, but maybe it's just enchodus again. Thank you for any help!
  14. Hello, I am going fossil hunting in a stream called Big Brook in NJ. It's mostly a stream ankle high. So I was wondering where should I dig and sift to find the most fossils? Should I dig deep? Should I go where all the rocks are? Should I dig on land? Thanks.

    Sawfish Rostral Tooth

A fine sawfish rostral tooth from Big Brook, New Jersey, and the first one I've found that was complete. Both views are of the same specimen, the smaller image is there to give a sense of how thin this tooth is - I'm really amazed at how long a fragile fossil like this one can survive in a creek without being broken to pieces.

    Big Brook NJ Finds

Please help identify this fossil found in Big Brook NJ. Similar to Belemnite but much larger than what is normally found in Big Brook, and has the pocked outer surface (see Belemnite samples in 3rd picture for comparison)..
  17. Hi, Haven't posted here in forever... still learning about one can find at Big Brook. We went there on Saturday for the first time in a year. Found a few nice things (and some nothings): I'm wondering about this Is it coral or something else? I also found some other things in y older items which I'll post next. Fossil ID

Hello, I found a couple of pretty little shark teeth and belemnites on my first trip to Big Brook,NJ, but I have no idea what these objects are. On the rounded one perhaps a vertebra? The darker object perhaps a bone fragment? Appreciate any help and information. Thank you!
  19. Hello all, I usually post up photos of shark teeth and other misc things, but this time I'll only ask for help with the more unusual fossils I've come across at big brook NJ. First photo I thought enchodus teeth. Second xiphactinus or enchodus again. third and fourth photo (same fossil) maybe jaw or beaver tooth. fifth photo no clue but maybe bone? sixth photo looks like fossil cocoa pebbles.. Last three photos are of the most interesting find, no idea but was hoping it would be a chunk of tooth. Thank you for any help in IDing these.

    Weird Fossil from Big Brook

Hey guys, I'm new here and to fossil collecting in general and have made a couple trips to Big Brook. I've collected mostly shark teeth and the usual fossils in the area but the other day found this fragment of something. I wouldn't have thought too much about it but it has these odd ridges on a small part of the edge which baffles me and everyone whose seen it. Is this even a fossil and if so does anyone have any clue what it is from? Any information would be greatly appreciated.

    Claw?

Me again and my crazy finds. Does anyone know what this is? It was found in Big Brook State Park, NJ. Thanks in advance, Brooke
  23. Hello, First post, looking forward to many more including trip reports. I enjoy taking my family on a "hunt" from metal detecting to rock mining but this was our first time looking for fossils, it was addicting! My two boys 9 and 12 are nature kids and could spend all day exploring along with my wife. I had a trip planned to the Jersey shore and started researching finding shark teeth on the beach, which led me to a site about Big Brook Fossils in NJ. We decided a side trip was a must! We stayed about 2 hours and found quite a few sharks teeth, some I am still working to identify. Here is where I need your help, it could just be a rock, but the proportions seem to be that of a skull, along with tooth sockets. I was thinking snake/lizard, but to be honest, I have no idea what I am looking at and would welcome your opinions! TOP - seems to have two eye sockets SIDE - Seems to have some sort of ear socket, more like a lizard than a snake UNDERNEATH - Teeth sockets? Thanks for looking and I can't wait to post about our next adventure! Matt

    what is this?!

Found these in Big Brook over the past few years. Unfortunately, I am not knowledgeable enough to identify these with any certainty. This one obviously looks like a shark tooth, but I question it because it is not made up of the same shiny material as the other "regular" looking shark tooth fossils we found. No clue about this glob.Porous The top tooth has a sandy texture and less boney look but same shape. The left one does not seem fossilized to me. Not sure if prehistoric squid or something like a claw or nail? Centers seem to be a little hollowed out.

    Big Brook Fossil Identification

I collected these fossils from Big Brook a long time ago. The first is a shark tooth unlike any other I have found. The root is missing, and all that is left is a short blade and one cusp attached. It has serrations. The second item I had always thought to be a tooth but the more I have thought about it I am starting to think it is in fact a claw. It has a groove in the side profile that I have seen mentioned in other topics about claws. Any ideas? The last pic shows the groove.
