I found this in an abandoned fish nest in a human-made lake. One of my favorite finds!

A few finds from this weekend. Fortunate enough to have a cottage on Lake Erie, fairly close to Rock Point Provincial Park which is known for it's exposed fossils of a 350 million year old coral reef. About half were found on the beach itself and the other half in the crushed gravel part of the driveway. I'd imagine the beach will keep yielding new finds after every storm, here is hoping for it anyway.

I had the opportunity to cruise around Wyoming, Colorado, and Utah on my own for 5 days The first day of my fossil hunting excursion was to be spent at the Petrified Blue Forest site in Western Wyoming. Having been there before, I knew fragments of wood abound, many carrying the blue agate on it. But I was determined to find a “large” log this trip. I had researched how to up my odds and stopped at a hardware store the night before and purchased a shovel as step one. So early that morning, I found myself looking out at the vastness of this “forest” thinking where to start.

Sumatra Blue Amber (Sinamar Fm., ~30 Ma)
Barrelcactusaddict posted a gallery image in Members Gallery
From the album: Fossil Amber and Copal: Worldwide Localities
Palm-sized piece roughly 80g in weight. There is a very thin layer of coal on the top and bottom of the piece, making it a good example of a seam-type formation. It's blue coloration is purely surface fluorescence, initiated in this case by a 140 lumen LED light; this fluorescence (especially under a non-LW UV light) is caused by the presence of an exceptionally high concentration of various hydrocarbons contained within the amber.© Kaegen Lau

Any idea why these little bones are blue? (I know the look a little green here but in sunlight they’re much more blue.) Found a very remote place in Central Turkey.

Tiger Mountain Amber (Upper-Tukwila/Lower-Renton Formations [Boundary], Middle to Late Eocene)
Barrelcactusaddict posted a gallery image in Members Gallery
From the album: Fossil Amber and Copal: Worldwide Localities
Incredible blue fluorescence in amber from Tiger Mountain, Washington State, U.S.A. No longwave UV light has been used here; these select pieces fluoresce in the same LED light conditions as Dominican blue amber, and with a strikingly similar coloration. Commercial quantities of blue amber have been officially described to be found in the Dominican Republic, Indonesia, and Mexico (Chiapas); to my knowledge, blue amber has never been described, much less documented, from North American deposits. Total weight is 0.4g, each piece measuring only a few millimeters in length. In the fluorescent vide© Kaegen Lau

Sumatra Blue Amber (Sinamar Fm., ~30 Ma)
Barrelcactusaddict posted a gallery image in Members Gallery
From the album: Fossil Amber and Copal: Worldwide Localities
4.3g dark, transparent blue amber from West Sumatra. After grinding and polishing, I was surprised to discover that it contains 2 ants and 2 winged ants (possibly wasps); these were a little tricky to photograph, due to the amber's strong fluorescence under 140 lumen LED light, so these inclusions had to be backlit. I used a Canon EOS 500D, Canon 60mm f/2.8 Macro Lens, and combined 2x and 4x Hoya circular magnifier lenses (8x).© Kaegen Lau

4.3g dark, transparent blue amber from West Sumatra. Lateral view of the same Psudomyrmex inclusion in the previous entry. The antennae appear to have clubbed tips, but each is actually coated/overlain by a congealed drop of resin within the amber itself (this type of suspended resin formation is characteristic of and common in Indonesian amber).© Kaegen Lau

4.3g dark, transparent blue amber from West Sumatra. This displays 3 of the 4 inclusions contained in the piece itself, each one a Pseudomyrmex sp. (the winged ants may possibly be wasps, but it is unlikely).© Kaegen Lau

4.3g dark, transparent blue amber from West Sumatra. The inclusion is that of a well-preserved Pseudomyrmex sp. of ant. There is very little documentation, written or photographic, of the flora and fauna inclusions in Indonesian amber, unfortunately.© Kaegen Lau

Small (5-8g) partial nodules of raw blue amber from the east flank of the Bukit Barisan range of West Sumatra. These pieces are clear as glass, and fluoresce very nicely under a 140 lm LED light. *This Sumatra material (and Indonesian amber in general) is believed to have been produced by a parent tree belonging to the Dipterocarpaceae family; it's spectroscopic signature is also incredibly similar to Bitterfeld amber (also produced by a dipterocarp source tree). **This blue amber's particular locality is part of the Sinamar Fm., and the layers containing the resin are dated to be approximat© Kaegen Lau

Hello! I've been to the main digging site in the Blue Forest of Wyoming a couple of times but would like to try a couple of other sites there. Does anyone have the directions to the other digging areas? Thank you!

Location is in Missouri The area is dated to the Pennsylvanian most likely Raytown, Wyandotte Limestone Formation At this pile I hunt at there are many concretions, but none exude the blue coloring as they are mostly black and much smaller. I am not 100% sure these are fossils but these are the only weirdly hued fossils I have found there. I have found a few teeth from Eugeneodontida, Horn corals, Crinoids, Brachiopods, Nautiloids and petrified wood from the area. I do not have any measuring tools that are not wood when I took these pict

Hey all. I'm looking for some fossil wood that is a dark blue. Something similar to the color of lapis. Most of the blue forest wood I've looked at is more black than blue. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Good day everyone, The pictures below show from what i know an ammonite fossil imprint, but what is it? How can it be that it is such deep blue color? As shown in the second picture the fossil is about 1 cm long, it was found in Aguas de Madeiros, Portugal. Any insight would be greatly appriciated!

It's good to work for a mining company! When coworkers from Carlsbad, New Mexico found out I was becoming a geologist/paleontologist, they sent me a little gift. Rare, American blue Halite!
