    South Jersey Beach Finds

I hope everyone is having a great summer. I was walking on the beach the other day and for the first time I found a piece of bone. I have been walking this beach for the past 5 years and have never found a piece of bone. It is 3 inches long and at its widest point it is one inch. Hopefully it is IDable. I have no knowledge of bone material at all so any feedback would be greatly appreciated. I also happened to find a shark tooth. I believe it is a lower Carcharhinus plumbeus (Sandbar Shark) 13mm. It is a great color and is serrated. Also the root and blade is thin/flat. That is one of the reasons I believe it is Sandbar Shark. If someone can confirm my ID it would be greatly appreciated. I hope you enjoy the pics.

    Is this bone impression?

A few weeks ago I went along AA Highway here in Kentucky and collected a number of mortality plates from the side of the road. I had cleaned up this plate and had it sitting to the side as I tried to figure out how I was going to display it. One of my cats knocked it over last night and split off a chunk that exposed this concretion looking thing that was hidden beneath the top layer of crushed brachiopod shells. Unfortunately when I picked it up to examine it, the top of this concretion looking thing fell off. It sent little fragments everywhere. When I looked back to the main part of the mortality plate I saw this shape. I'm not sure if this is anything of any importance or just an anomaly of the rock. My brain keeps telling me that it looks like bone of some sort (well impression of bone), but I know I'm not experienced enough to know. I collected the top of the concretion looking thing and what fragments I could find and took a picture of them as well. I couldn't pick up the other fragments as they just crumbled in my fingers. Also, I guess it's would be important information this concretion looking things is a little over 3 inches long and about an inch and a half wide. Did my cat just find something of importance in my mortality plate?
  3. Hello! I've had this piece in my collection for a while, and for the longest time I thought it was a bone. It's very heavy, more so than my other rocks this size. It also has a bone-like appearence. Any idea if this is indeed a bone or what it could be? I know this is a fossil forum and not a rock one, but if this is just a rock, any idea what it is and why it looks like that? And why is it so heavy? Thank you!
  4. Hello, I am currently on a cross country road trip with my family. Yesterday I was jogging through the desert Near Carlsbad , New Mexico and discovered what is obviously a bone but seems to be fossilized. It feels more like stone than a bone. I was curios If anyone knows what it could potentially be. I am a Middle School History teacher from NJ and would love to use it in my classroom if I had more information. Thank you in advance

Need ID on odd shaped bone

I can’t tell if this is just a very worn piece of vert or something completely different. Found in north central Nebraska. Miocene. Thanks.

    Peace river bone

I found this in the Peace River in early June, I’ve tried researching it but honestly have no clue where to start. I’m giving it away to a family tomorrow here in Orlando and I’d love to at least tell them a direction to look for identification. The family are two twin girls 5, and boy who is 7, and the parents are 2 of Orlando’s finest. They made me a drawing which says misD ric after giving them a few fossils this summer. @Shellseeker @hemipristis Any help would be appreciated Rick

    Mystery Bone - Pleistocene?

Mystery bone fragment. Partially mineralized. Found on a riverbank in southern Minnesota. Deposits on the river are mostly Pleistocene to modern ( with a couple Cretaceous band cut through). My first thought was a very old very tumbled calcaneus (horse or bison size). But the depression, pointed out in red circle, does not seem to match either of those. I know its very worn but thought I'd give it a shot here.

    Fossil?

Hey there I found this in a creek in south central Tennessee. I feel like it’s definitely a fossilized dinosaur tibia with webbed feet??? Or maybe has been shaped like this naturally?? Please help? Thanks in advance!!

Onslow Beach bone and misc ID

Hi everyone! I fossil hunt at Onslow quite a bit and have found a few things in the last couple weeks that I was curious about. The circle thing with a hole stumped a Facebook group I’m in. I did hold it up to a light and it is not see through so I’m assuming not glass. Thanks for any help as always!
  13. I collected this piece of placoderm bone a while ago from the Cedar Valley Formation (Middle Devonian) in Iowa. Most bits I've found are just "indeterminate bone bits", but this piece has enough structure that I am hopeful it can be identified to a specific part of the anatomy. It superficially reminds me of a cranial element posted by @Peat Burns a while ago from the Silica Shale in Ohio. However I am too unfamiliar with placoderms to say exactly where this piece of bone might have come from, and I was hoping a forum member might have some input. Thanks for any thoughts. @jdp

    Fossilized Bone ID Help

Could I get some help identifying this fossil specimen? I'm unsure of if it's a rock or bone but considering the contrast of texture and look with any rocks I've found before, I'm leaning towards bone. It was found near a river in middle-Arkansas & is pretty small and hard to discern. Any ideas?

    Dinosaur Vert ID

Sorry this vert is super messy but it’s got some super tough stone on it that I’m not sure I can remove, it’s in rough shape. it’s got a similar shape to some tyrannosaurid verts I’ve seen so I’m curious if it’s that or something else. Would have left it on the ground if I didn’t suspect tyrannosaurid but had to check. Thanks!

I’m thinking ostracoderm or placoderm bone?

Never seen this texture on a brachiopod or bryozoan before. Found in Wisconsin gravel.

    Is the rock or bone

Are these Dino bones or just strange rocks? how can I verify or get them documented.
  19. This has come up for sale on my local auction site..... The listing says it is a large fossilized bone/ tooth, 70cm long and there is no information in the description. Obviously, this is not a tooth! It looks like modern bone, not fossil Someone has to know what animal this is from, the shape is so distinctive! I feel like I should know just because of how distinctive it is but I can't place it.... so, experts - help! Tape measure is in cm

Any idea what this is from?

I can assure you it is fossilized bone it just doesn’t look like it in the pictures because of how dirty parts of it are and the bad camera quality. It’s about 3 pounds 5.5 inches long and 4 inches wide. horseshoe canyon AB
  21. Found a black object on the beach in Atlantic Beach Florida. Curious if it's part of a dugong rib or whale bone. It measures 3" in length by 1.25" in width has a slight curve as well. It's Solid/Dense for it's size. Any help would be much appreciated.

    North Sulfur River bones

I made a trip to the North Sulfur River June 21st. Among the things I found were these three bones, which I can't identify. Bones from this part of NSR are from the Ozan formation, and are usually mosasaur or fish. Here are three views of bone #1.
