Serrations are almost completely worn but faintly visible on the left side. The right side is also a bit damaged, so correct me if this is not a meg. If it is, is it a posterior with a skinny crown or some sort of symphyseal? Length is 1.27 cm.

location: Calvert county, MD formation: chesapeake group Does anyone know what kind of sponge (I’m assuming that’s what it is) is on this shell? I found this years ago. Can’t remember but this was either a Calvert cliffs state park or brownie beach find. Im just now appreciating the coolness of this little guy.

I have a few shark teeth that require second opinions on the IDs. All are East Coast of the US. First up, a Pungo River micro. 4mm or so. This is a familiar tooth form to me as I’ve seen this exact tooth in STH micros. I had put teeth of this exact form in with Cetorhinus teeth because it’s so common in STH micro mix. I could be wrong about the ID on the STH teeth plus Pungo River is different as I believe Cetorhinus teeth are quite rare in that fauna. Both STH and PR have Cetorhinus and Alopias teeth. I believe there is a close familial relationship between those genera so I figu

Anyone in MD, Chesapeake Bay area going hunting this Saturday?
Mara_Masina posted a topic in General Fossil Discussion
Hey all, This weekend I was going to go on a trip with folks from my fossil club, but they cancelled last minute and I've already paid for a hotel room in the area. Therefore, weather be darned, I'm going fossil hunting anyway. Is anyone else going out on Saturday that might want company? I'm a pretty relaxed human who typically matches the energy in the room, as I like to be inoffensive and approachable. I just figured that it would be awesome to hunt with another forum member or two instead of going it alone.- 14 replies

Which locality near the Calvert Cliffs is the most productive?
giftedsifrhippus posted a topic in Fossil Hunting Trips
I’ve never been collecting in the Chesapeake Bay before and am gonna visit the area soon during low tide. Which locality (beach, site) produces a good quantity and diversity of fossils. I’m not fixated on finding big megalodon teeth. I’d love to find a nice *Ecophora* and maybe some dolphin teeth. Species diversity would be nice.- 5 replies

I was lucky enough to receive some Micromatrix from @Gizmo and @sharkdoctor, and today I was looking through some of the teeth when I saw one I hadn’t noticed before. I’m sure I’ve seen something like it onlin but I can’t for the life of me remember where or what it is. Any one got any ideas? Matrix is from VA, Old Church FM (oligocene) and Calvert FM (Miocene) contact layer. Measure is in centimeters

Hello everyone! I am going to share this rather confusing tooth. I found it under a section of cliff whose major tooth producer was likely Zone 12, definite Calvert Formation (which is early Miocene, creeping up on mid Miocene). It wasn’t found in situ, but the state of the tooth is almost perfect, leading me to believe it had worn out not long ago and likely not a trade tooth. Given this tooth without context, I would call it a Galeocerdo cuvier. But, given the context, this should be impossible, Cuvier are supposed to have arisen latest Miocene or early Pliocene. But this tooth i

I’m quite busy these days, so it’s been a few months but I finally found a few hours to dart out and get a hunt in at brownies on Saturday. There had obviously been a myriad of collectors who braved the cold prior to me, so I wasn’t expecting much. However, I did end up with a few decent specimens. It feels good to get out into nature and climb over some trees once in a while. Despite my muted expression, I had a blast!

First off, HAPPY NEW YEAR! Went on a hunt at brownies beach (Miocene, Calvert FM, zone 4?) and it is official, the bay has iced on its shores, that’s the end of winter hunting season I guess. No idea how many epic teeth I must’ve missed because of it. Super cold Because of this finds were limited, top three finds include symphyseal hemi (tiny) and half a shark vert. The third? This Mammal tooth, I’m guessing small rodent? Sorry for bad pictures, I’ll try for better ones tomorrow. Can’t find my ruler, but this things tiny, around 1 cm.

Hello everyone, went to brownies beach last week, was crowded for the beach so finds were limited. Did find a few nice but common teeth and as always a good amount of chunkosaurusesr. Highlight was a chunk of jet. Anyway, I found this tiny tooth (5 millimeters slant height). Pictures taken with microscope. Miocene, Calvert FM (zone 4?), brownies beach. Any ideas?

This little bit ( about an inch) came from Brownies beach, MD (Calvert FM, zone 4?) where bone is extremely common. This one caught my eye, because it reminds me of a Glyptotherium scute I have (from Florida). Not saying that’s what it is, just wondering if it could be a scute of some sort (also I believe Glyptotherium is a Pleistocene animal). I have found terrestrial fossils there before (well two, a possum tooth and some jet). So is it a regular ol’ chunko or a scute of some sort, and if so what? Next to glypto scute

*WARNING-LOTS OF PICTURES* I took a trip to brownie’s beach today, but unfortunately I could only get there at high tide. This meant my plan of heading south where “the good stuff” Normally is would be treacherous and my normal hunting spot (really I’ve only been there once before, so maybe preferred) was under about two feet of water. So I got as south as I could with any beach above water and got to work. If one uses winnowing in their favor, even spots north of the layer of the zone four that bears the teeth can be productive. This combined with a recent rain, powerful waves to
