Here is one I spent some time looking at yesterday. I purchased this a year ago, sold as a Leptostyrax. It was found near Moscow, Russia and I believe the correct age is Cenomanian. I put this is the display and forgot about it. I have been trying to study up on Russian shark teeth because we have about 200 that will be here in June. I decided to take a second look at this one and compared it to the Texas Leptostyrax I have. Definitely not a match. Under the scope, the Russian tooth looks like a Goblin but not quite like the Scapanorhynchus teeth I have. It’s a little under .5” . It could be a different species of Scapanorhynchus that I’m not familiar with but I did some research on I wonder if perhaps this is Pseudoscapanorhynchus ? I am not sure about the ID to a genus level but I do think Mitsukurinidae is the right track.

Cretaceous Shark ID Needed (not teeth, full fossil shark)
fossilsonwheels posted a topic in Fossil ID
We have been quietly looking for a fossil shark for awhile to round out our shark program. This Cretaceous shark from Lebanon seems to be the winner. No ID from the seller which is okay. It seems to be in excellent condition and I do not see much enhancement of the fossil compared to some I have seen. I have not be studying Lebanese sharks for very long or in much depth but this one would seem to be a pretty good example. The matrix is 12" x 7" and the shark itself is 10". I am not even all that good at ID'ing shark teeth so trying to ID a full shark is a bit of a leap for me lol I am by no means an expert but I did a bit of research and I believe this shark might belong to Scyliorhinidae. I can not say for sure but it did appear very similar to other Lebanese Catsharks. There are a few options for Lebanese sharks so it could be something else. The seller did provide good pictures so I will let those do most of the talking. Any opinion is welcome !!- 6 replies
