    Is this a good idea?

Hi all. First off it's a dream of mine to one day have a skull from a xiphactinus audax. I have here a xiphactinus skull, but as you can see it is heavily disarticulated. Would it be a bad or good idea to try and have this skull professionally restored?

  3. I found this miocene fossil from Pohang, Korea. I think spots near the abdomen is Light organs. Is this order Stomiiformes? Size about 4cm

A fish is looking for his ID

I purchased this fish while in WI when I was still a kid back in the early Devonian, but never received an ID on it. Unfortunately it’s poorly preserved and difficult to see, but I’ll take your best guess. No idea if it originally hails from WI or not.

    Phareodus preps

Im still working on getting an air dryer, but still working on fossil fishy's. Here are two Phareodus fishy's ive been working on and ive got another one but that one still has a long way to go. Ive really got too many fossil projects, but for me, thats a good thing. Keeps me busy and out of the bars. I also havent been to a bar for about 20 years. Oh, the fish in the background just needs a little bit of clean up around the jaws mostly but the bottom fish needs a lot of fin work still. Hoping the fins on that one are better than what it seems? RB

    Fish ID

I found this fish for sale online. There is only one picture and not a very clear one. It's simply described as rare fish. Can anybody tell me if this a fish from the Santana Formation in Brazil?
  9. I had a seller say ALL stingray fossils are at least marginally "touched up." While other sellers say only some of them have repair. What should I believe? Is everything a lie? :0
  10. holdinghistory

    German fish

I recently picked up this fish. The seller said Atractosteus Strausi, but it doesn't seem to match that from what I could find. Any ideas? Thanks!

    AMNH Fish Fossils

Yesterday, I visited the American Museum of Natural History in New York with my girlfriend, benefitting from free passes she got from the local library. Spent some time in the Hall of Vertebrate Origins which is over all my favorite exhibit though the two dinosaur halls and the hall of prehistoric mammals- all on the 4th Floor are well worth visiting. Took a number of pictures of the fossil fishes for Fossildude19 and the rest of the Forum membership. Poor lighting in that section of the exhibit hall limited what I was able to take, but hope you enjoy what I could record. Fish fossil experts feel free to jump in and identify what's shown:

    Sphyraenus barracuda?

Hello. I was IDing some fish jaws and I'm stumped on this one. I'm thinking sphyraenus barracuda, since this jaw came from Florida. It's 3 inches exact, tooth sockets approx 3/8'' for the larger ones.
  13. fossilnut

    fish bone?

I apologize as I did not keep any information about where I found this. But I saved it as I was curious. I have showed it to some experienced natural history collectors and those interested in skulls without any success. So I am asking if anyone can help. I do not even know for sure that it is fish. But I remain curious. Thanks for any help anyone can offer.

Hey guys. Ive been trying to ID these jaws but to no avail. Is it possible you can help me out? They were collected from Withlacoochee river in west Florida.

I was told this fish nodule came from the Anti-Atlas region of Morocco, and is supposedly Cretaceous in age. Can anyone ID it?

    Collection Update

So, I vanished from the forums for several months while dealing with a new career and some health issues. While I spent most of my time focused on being a new teacher, I couldn't break the bug over the winter season. While I did no collecting of my own, I proceeded to spend a ton of money online purchasing additions to my collection. I am pretty proud of my modest, but growing collection and wanted to show off. Where better than on TFF! This is going to take more than a few posts...

  24. I bought two unprepared fish nodules from a dealer at a show and have started to prepare them. I'm a total noob when it comes to preparation. I've prepared a few trilobites from wheeler shale but that's about it. I have a Paleo Aro and a Paasche air eraser. Can you all take a look at what I've done so far, and help me to understand what I'm seeing? Obviously I just got a fin, but I don't understand what the big long part is in the middle, or how the fish is oriented. A lot of the black/brown layer has chipped off while I've been working on it. Is this an actual 3-dimensional fossil? I expected it to be just like a thin plate, like Green River fish. I have only used the Aro, haven't tried messing around with the air eraser yet, although wouldn't the air eraser chip off the thin brown layer just as badly?
  25. Nice day to take a stroll through ancient Dallas. Got lucky with two fish that would have been washed away tonight with rain coming. Atco/Austin Group Late Cretaceous- 85 million yrs.
