Hi everyone, Just wanted to give a quick introduction before I jump into things. I live in Alberta Canada. Been rock collecting and fossil hunting all my life. I have found lots of fossils however nothing super awesome. I cant wait to talk to the members as I have lots to learn and hopefully I can share what I know as well.

Hello fellow fossil hunters and merry Xmas! I am a fossil hunter in northeast Florida and here am town until Thursday this week and would love to do some hunting and meet some hunters in the area. Any tips or advice would be greatly appreciated. I have heard that the construction sites in the Venice and Parrish area have been quite rewarding. And any time you all are in the jacksonville area please feel free to hit me up for some hunting on my turf! I found this meg 2 weeks ago (my first meg!!!)

Greetings from Texas, where I've made tracks all over the state this year while chasing the thrill of discovery. I bias my paleo time toward field excursions and prep, less toward reporting, so I'll roll out some of my favorite finds for the year in one thread. But first, the legalese. Good sites are getting hard to find, and harder to hang onto, so I try to play my cards close to the vest in that regard, at least the ones I might care to return to at some point after sufficient weathering has occurred. In that spirit, this thread is about fossils and not their source. But do not be alarmed, when it is time for my stewardship to end and pass things into other hands for perpetuity, full provenance will make its way to recipient institutions. In line with the Law of Superposition, let's start with the older stuff first and work our way up the strat column.

It’s looking like If I want fossils in Florida while I’m there for Christmas I will most likely have to go unguided. Since I’ve seen some great stuff come out of the Santa Fe and it’s relatively close to where I’ll be I’d like to try my luck. Is this something that’s feasible for 2 people without a boat on foot? Is the river walkable in areas? What are water levels like in the winter? Are there access points I should aim for? Are there many feeder creeks and should I try to access these? What type of gear would be recommended? My wife and I will have floating sifters with 1/4 inch mesh and waders. All advice/opinions welcome. thanks!

Hi, I'm visiting my niece who just had a baby, in campbellsville KY. I noticed there are a lot of very ancient fossils in Kentucky. Does anyone have any sites or road cuts to explore? Thanks alot, this is my first post. Stuart

Are any of those mammoth "fossils" around actually fossils? Wouldn't they still be natural bone? I know that the remains found in colder northern area, the remains are still original dead tissue, because they're regularly found with soft tissue and hair, but they're found other places too, along with all other animals from the more recent periods, where freezing isn't a factor, but Is there even enough time for fossilization to occur for those animals? Is there a general point in, or period of time, after which it's just not old enough for fossilization to occur? I know any such point, or period, would vary depending on the regions environmental conditions, but I would imagine there are places where there is such a point before which geologically, remains are fossilized, and after which remains are still actual bone.

Was looking for some input and ideas on what this would belong to. Not much information available and the pictures are not the best. But even your “best guess” is appreciated. The entire specimen is about 3 feet in length. The possible collection location is guessed to be around the Milk River area in Canada close to the Montana border. That’s all I have available to me. So please let me know your thoughts. Thank you.

Dear Canadian Fossil Collectors, Some of you may have heard that the ROM is finally going to open an invertebrate gallery, something that has been sadly missing for many years. There was a recent announcement of a $5 million (Canadian I assume) donation for this project. https://www.rom.on.ca/en/about-us/newsroom/press-releases/royal-ontario-museum-receives-landmark-5-million-gift-to-establish This is a great move on the part of the ROM. Jean-Bernard Caron has contacted me regarding the new exhibition. We have communicated both by email and phone. It seems that they are in desperate need of "spectacular" Ontario specimen for the exhibit. They probably contacted me because of my web site and in general people are aware of my "Ontario" collection, both Arkona and Brechin. It is very unfortunate that they (ROM) have no relationship with Canadian collectors or any other collectors for that matter. Jean and I spoke about this problem at length because at this point no one is willing to donate anything. We spoke about my Brechin crinoid collection and how it is going to an American institution simply because someone at the ROM told me that there was no one at the ROM interested and I should find someone somewhere else. We also spoke of a Arkona crinoid collection I personally gave them over 30 years ago and how it is still sitting in the same boxes under a table. No one bothered to accession it. And finally we spoke of a recent find by a Canadian collector of a very rare fish from Arkona. An American wanted to work on it, had no problem with it being deposited at the ROM and even made arrangements for the ROM to contact the collector. The collector sat at his phone for weeks waiting for the ROM to call. The specimen ended up being donated to an American Institution. I made it very clear to Jean that his problem is the historic relationship with the collecting public and more importantly the total lack of interest in working on ONTARIO projects. For being called the "Royal Ontario" all of the work is outside of Ontario. Jean has recognized this as a problem and is willing to work on repairing the relationship and maybe getting some Ontario projects going. I think that Jean is sincere in his statements and would really like a better relationship with the collecting public. I have agreed to donate some specimens but I am not going to fill the entire "Ontario" exhibit. The purpose of this post is to encourage Canadians, and other collectors to contact Dr. Caron and to start a relationship with the museum. And of course he is looking for Canadians to make donations to the exhibit. What exactly he needs is a very open question. I personally will be visiting sometime in the new year to see exactly what is needed and go from there. Maybe you can do the same. His contact information is below. Dr. Jean-Bernard Caron Richard M. Hello - first post here. I've been lurking in the background reading lots and lots of your posts in the forum. Very informative, really enjoy looking at the pics of the fossils being found on the Peace river. I noticed in some of the pictures what appears to be rapids on the river - appears to be shallow water moving over rocks. Where on the river would these rapids be located? On the satellite images it looks like there may be some rapids 5.24 miles (following the river) or 4.2 as the crow flies - north of the Gardner ramp near Oak Creek. Has anyone made it that far north from Gardner and checked out the area for fossils? I'm trying to plan a trip and was thinking of using a canoe with a small outboard to travel from Gardner to Oak Creek. Is it possible to motor on the Peace river north of Gardner - or are there too many obstacles or shallow water? Hi Everyone, I’m headed to Jacksonville FL for Christmas and was looking to get into some fossil hunting somehow some way. Looking for any recommendations within a 4 hour radius. Paid guided hunt? Popular creeks, beaches, or rivers? Would like to take my nieces out but if that’s not feasible then that’s ok. Any recommendations would be appreciated. Thanks!

Hi people! I need help for identifying these two canine roots.They were found in some Cave in Southeastern Serbia,along with Cave Bear,Cave Hyena,Bison and Deer bones. I got this as a gift from my friend who has found them also this smaller partial tooth which i think also that is from a Cave Hyena. He thinks that the roots belongs to Cave Hyena canines.On the last picture u can see the scale with his teeth collection and with 3 teeth that he gave me. Thanks
