Found this mortality plate in the thin compact layer between neogene conglomerates and marl, above the flysch, at Milia beach in Alonissos island, Greece. According to a paper regarding the neogene in Alonissos [ http://sciencepress.mnhn.fr/sites/default/files/articles/pdf/g2019v41a3.pdf ] findings from marl deposits in an abandoned lignite quarry near Votsi village include Planorbis freshwater gastropods. Have I also found planorbis gastropods? Am I looking at Miocene or Pliocene fossils? As always any suggestions are much appreciated!

This summer, I visited the beautiful island of Kythera. Located in South Greece, on the joint of three seas, it is a very calm place that combines wild nature, delicious traditional food and history. The lore says that Zeus castrated his father, Kronos. His testicles fell in the sea at the shores of the island and from there Aphrodite (Venus) was born. Goddess of love and fertility, she is also connected with sea due to the way of her birth. This is the point where mythology, history and lore meet. Since the ancient people discovered pectinidae, they built a temple dedicated to Aphrodite. Although I never found the temple, I located the formation. Situated in the middle of the island, the area of Mitata (Μητάτα) is within a Neogene formation. The easiest place to observe the formation is at 36.2508099, 23.0003155 I found many pectinidae and an echinoid, about 15cm diameter. The last one was not fully retrieved. I underestimated its hardness and broke it. On the North side of the island, close to the port you will find permian to early Triassic sediments. There I collected a (rock?) fragment of coral. On the south side of the island, you will observe Cretaceous formations with some fossilised corals. The place is called Melidoni beach. (Παραλία Μελιδόνι) 36.1586538, 22.9481317 The formation is accessible with boat or swimming as it is located across the beach. Thus, no photos.. If you visit it, don't let Google deceive you. Follow the local signs since Google will lead you 3kms North. Since this post has to do with Greece I will include some Greek search keywords, in case someone might be looking info for this area. Hello! I am doing some labelling and archiving so that I do not loose track of my fossils. Most of them, I have managed to narrow down to species, but for these little fellas. Some info: Triassic age Scale bar: 1cm 70% Sturia sp.or 30% Arcestes sp. Date of discovery: 2001 (My first found fossils) Location: 37°36'19"N 23°04'25"E The matrix is what locally call "Epidaurus marble". Same marble was used on the upper part of the Ancient theatre nearby, that's why it is full of cephalopods. I have read THIS and THIS post, plus a publication mentioned on the second post so I am between Sturia and Arcestes, mostly balanced towards Sturia. I compared against many photos, but I believe this made up my mind: Currently, this outcrop is not exposed. Used to be a small quarry either for marble or for fossil extraction. Has been covered with soil more than a decade and transformed into an olive oil plantation. Confirmed in person 12/2019. I know my chances are too thin since the samples are two small, but if someone is experienced to Hallstat phase, I would appreciate some advice. Wouldn't bother so much, but these are my firsts and hold deep sentimental value. Thanks in advance!

I would highly appreciate your opinion about this formation . Marine , Pliocene or Pleistocene age, Greece . Could be algae , bryozoa ?

Found a rather large and partially well preserved ammonite in ammonitico rosso dating early to middle Toarcian in the mountains of Epirus, Greece. Partially preserved because the other side was exposed and totally flattened. I am actually puzzled by the flattened state of the inner whorl as opposed to the outer whorl and center which appear intact. The shine is due to the paralloid-acetone mix i coated the specimen with, to prevent further deterioration. Would appreciate any suggestions to the species.

Dear all, I am Dimitris 30 y.o. from Greece. My attraction and interest for whatever was below earth crust was obvious from a very young age. All of my vacations included some kind of abandoned mine, cave, strange rock formation or whatever clue you could find before the Internet era and first period with 50 something kb modems.. A recent trip to Morocco resurrected my interest for fossils. Having studied petroleum engineering, I am familiar with geologic maps (which you can find easily online), although I struggle a little with terminology because some words are different in English. My purpose joining the forum is to exchange experiences, read about preparation of fossils and even find company for fossil hunting trips. Especially the last would be nice since its a hobby scarce to find. Καλησπέρα to possible members from Greece, здравей to Bulgaria! PS> Currently living in Sofia most of the time, North Greece and Serbia are my most easily accessible areas. Attached one nice hippurite from my yesterday hunt, first after 15 years!

Theese are from Evia island Greece an Upper Miocene site with fossils. Any idea what can be the oblong ones ? The cones are freshwater gastropods that can be seen. there is also round and some arced ones. Some have hole in the centre some not . The size also varies a lot from 1 cm to 10 cm

Found what appears to be a cross-section of a Clypeaster fossil in Pliocene sea deposits, on the Greek island of Kythera. The length is 16 cm. Any help and suggestions on the species would be much appreciated!

Hi guys I looked up fossils in Paxos and only one result cane up , shell beds in Gaios, I didn’t hunt these I found the flint corals on the northern tip of the island tumbled by the sea and seemingly from a flint band about 1/4 up the cliff. The other were quite erratically found on the coast around the island , I also found a belemnite but due to a lack of hammer and chisel couldn’t remove it. Does anyone know anything about these fossils thanks, will

Found these imprints in the island of Rhodes (Greece). The age of the cediment according to geological maps of the area is upper Pliocene to lower Pleistocene. The units on the scale are cm. I wonder if my assumptions about pine cones are correct (even considered cycad cones) having read about pine cone specimens being found on the island. Would be really happy if someone could pinpoint the species from the shape of indentations - in the first image which is the most detailed there appears to be a small hole in the center of what I suppose are the cone scales. This can also be seen in the second image, though the structure is in worse shape probably due to being exposed for a long time.

Need help identifying the following fragment. Took it out of the limestone in the locality Theokafta of the Argolis Peninsula, near the Ancient Theatre of Epidaurus (Greece, eastern Peloponnesus). The limestone contains condensed ammonoid beds of the Hallstatt facies (Triassic: Anisian–Ladinian). Since I've never seen an ammonite with a cigar shaped ending and the belemnite fossils I've see so far are bullet shaped, I would really appreciate your opinion on the matter! The size is 5cm and diameter 1,5 to 2cm.

Need help identifying the following ammonites. Found these fragments in limestone, in the locality Theokafta of the Argolis Peninsula, near the Ancient Theatre of Epidaurus (Greece, eastern Peloponnesus). The limestone contains condensed ammonoid beds of the Hallstatt facies (Triassic: Anisian–Ladinian). The size of A is about 8 cm and B is about 6cm (which woyld probably make it about 10-12cm if complete). Any suggestions would be much appreciated!

Need help to identify the following fossil. It was found in Milos, preserved in volcanoclastic sediment and diatomite. Data from a study in the area suggest late pliocene to early pleistocene. Looks like an echinoderma, but unlike any I've ever seen, since it's test appears to have layers and no apparent mouth (unless it's on the bottom part). I have even considered it being a cystoid or some coral, but I haven't had any luck researching my theories. Units on the pic with the ruler are cm and size is about 4.5cm. Any suggestion would be much appreceated!

Hello all, I am currently on Holiday in Greece and then on the islands Zakynthos and Kefalonia. I was wondering if anyone knows if there are things to find here. I searched on the internet but only found that there are some fossils on the top of the highest mountain in Kefalonia. But that is closed at this time in summer to prevent forest fires. Anyone else knows any locations?

So I’m so eager to find some kind of fossil that at this moment everything looks like a fossil to me. But today on the beach i found this weird formed object about 50 cm deep. Anyone has any idea if this is a stone or a fossil? It is also very light, not stone like at all... found this on Zakynthos, Greece on a beach close to Banana Beach about 30 mins away from the capital.
