I found a REAL BARGAIN online... but not identified. I am thinking Diplomystus sp. ??? What are the diagnostic features of this Genus? The odd mouth I have seen on Diplomystus - but also on Knightea!

My parents found this on their farm in southern Minnesota (Watonwan County), roughly 50 years ago. My parents--now in their 80s--are thinking about selling the farm, and passed the fossil on to me. I would be thrilled if anyone could help me figure out what it might actually be. I have tried to take clear pictures of each side. Any questions, feel free to let me know. Thanks in advance for your help!

I am not sure the correct place to post this. Please feel free to move this topic to a more appropriate place. I know there are members who do not have fossil collections of their own or if they do they may not have much. This may due for a variety of reasons. I was wondering if there were any other members out there that would like to join forces and be willing to help get small collections together for those in need. I realize there are individuals that have done this on their own. I thought it might be nice to start a group that could work together to do this on a larger scale and reach more individuals. I have some ideas on how this could work but before I get to far into it I would like to hear others opinions on it. So please share your input.

Spinosaurus Tooth Help!!

I am definitely an amateur when it comes to collecting and need some advice: I recently purchased my first 'larger' Spinosaurus tooth from a small gem/fossil shop in Seattle. The owner told me that it had no repairs or restorations, and that it of course came from Morocco. I tested the tooth under a UV flashlight and there were no anomalies, but I just wanted some more experienced opinions. The enamel looks good- no apparent cracks or suspicious color variations, root still has some of the matrix on it, but the tip seems a little suspicious to me... maybe I'm just being paranoid, but I have read so much about fake fossils and just want to be sure! Let me know what you guys think- Thanks!

Hello all! I am wondering if I could get some ideas for places to hunt fossils in Texas. We are currently just north of Dallas and will be heading sort of diagonally to the big bend area. Any ideas of good spots to hunt fossils aong the way. (Some of the trip will have a 9 year old. Any kid friendly spots also appriciated) thanks all in advance!

Stellate Hair-Like Fossil In New Jersey Cretaceous Amber

today i have found another inclusion from my raw lot of cretaceous NJ amber. it bears resemblance to a stellate fern hair (comparison picture shown below) and also to stellate fern hairs I have found in a piece of (presumably baltic or dominican) amber that is 30 MYO. i'm not sure about this and i was wondering if anyone could shed some light on it, have these been documented in NJ amber before? I found this in a Southcentral KY branch about 100 yds down from where a spring was bubbling up out of the ground. Looked this morning for about an hr or so on help IDing it but had no luck. This thing is almost same size as a small can of soup and looks to be perfectly round with no tapering. Anyone in the know?

Looking for ideas on how to keep bookshelf displays from getting so dusty. It is a pain to move all the fossils all the time to dust.

Hi, This is my first post and I'm very new to fossils and minerals but also very interested in learning, now that I've found this new interest. Last weekend I was hiking with a friend on a dinosaur footprint trail and found this. I thought it had an interesting shape. I'm guessing it's just bivalves attached to the rock, but would like some other opinions since I know very little about fossils. Thank you in advance

I've just visited this hill directly north of the Trump National Golf Course (yes, the president owned a golf course in my city ) which I was told by a museum docent had fossil fish scales. Here's what I found which could possibly be fish scale fossils, but I need a full confirmation on this. Some notes -All three rocks are associated- they were all part of a giant piece of shale rock which was broken into pieces when I found it. -The "fish scales" are a more darker or orange brown. -I think I was unable to capture the best possible detail due to the absence of natural lighting which made details more camouflaged. -Each "fish scale" lie on only one layer, throwing off the possibility of it being a crystal. -The black stuff are dendrites or a similar type. -Found in the Palos Verdes Hills, directly north of the Trump National Golf Course. Rock 1 Rock 2 Rock 3 Is this my first ever fossil find or another bust?

Hi all... I finally got my new prep lab up and running and pulled a jacket out of storage. A pile of crocodilian scutes and a few bones form the Eocene Wasatch Fm of southwestern Wyoming. i have exposed the bones and I am stumped. Do I leave these bones in matrix to show them as found, or take them out and have a cool collection that is much more easily stored or displayed. They main argument for removing them is that it is a fairly big bloc, and I don't have all that much display space, and it is not really articualted. The main argument for displaying as is is that it would be a lot less work. A lot less. I kinda want to know what you folks think. I was hoping I would find a skull or a jaw, but no such luck yet, although there are few areas that puzzle me. Here are some pix. Notice that it is primarily scutes, as croc skeletons tend to be. and a few closer up shots. Here is a pile of scutes. and here are two leg bones... and a bunch more scutes, and at the top of the picture is a string of articulated verts. Here is another shot of the verts. Through the out-of-focusitude, notice how fractured they are. These will be a lot of fun to put back together, but they will look a lot better (I hope). Thanks for looking and What would you do?

Hello and thank you for this amazing site! At times feel out of my league here, but there's always someone to explain a question in more layman's terms. I live in both New Jersey and Pacifica, CA. Ive always had a love and fondness for rocks, any shape, size, and color. My father had a passion for fossils. Upon his death he left several crates of "fossils and concretions". - I've been able to uncover some bone using a brush, toothbrush and a "picky" tool - at rather slow rate might I add.... I appreciate the wisdom of both the professionals and scientists as well as the amateurs seeking advise. Thanks fort all your input and hopefully can decide on what to do with these fossils! Cheers! I have found a large rock containing a crinoid calyx. I am deciding whether or not to extract the fossil from the rock it is in and if I do extract it, how should I go about doing that? If you have any additional information you can tell me about this fossil please do so!

I have just started searching recentley have alwayd been interested. Been finding some coral fossil chunks up by lake erie in ohio. Really got me interested in searching. I have been researching but i am still a little confused and coukd use some tips and instruction on what to be looking for and where to look! I have no one iam learning from trying to self teach and iam reading but the words are not translating to the search thank you!

Can someone identify what species of whale this is and how big the whale might have been it is from Aurora, North Carolina. I got it at fossil show the bottom is 6 inches wide 5 inches high the top is broken so I cant get a actuate measurement

The other day I saw a term used that i forgot to write down and can't find again. HINTS: 1. It described "wishfull" seeing i.e. seeing something (a fossil) in a rock that wasn't there but was suggested by cracks, lines, or structures in the rock. 2. it started with p----- 3. It was in the ID section, as I recall. Any help would be appreciated.
