Crab Claw Fragments And More Found At Moonstone Beach
theoriginalrods posted a topic in Fossil Hunting Trips
I went fossil hunting about a month ago at Moonstone Beach in Humboldt county, Northern CA. This is a popular local beach, but most people aren't aware of the fossils found up a hidden trail on the north side of the beach. This is a fairly steep trail leading up to a fossil filled sandstone cliff at the top. The fossils are loose all along the trail, but mostly broken. The fossils here are not attached to rock and are more delicate than others I have found at different local sites. The fossils are from the Pleistocene Epoch, around 700,000 years ago. I found the crab claw pieces (pictured together but they are not from the same crab), 2 sand dollars, giant barnacles, wormtubes, various gastropod shells, and what I think are sponges or sea plants. My buddie found petrified wood and I have heard of otter or pinnaped teeth as well as bird and fish bones being found there as well. I'll keep looking...- 3 replies
