  1. Hello, I recently found this object washed up on a beach in northern California. We're wondering if anyone recognizes it, or could tell us what type of animal it might be from? Thanks so much for any suggestions, Jackie Sones Bodega Bay, CA

    Coprolite

Can someone tell me the best way to disassemble (?) coprolite in an effort to locate any hidden items? About the only thing I have come up with is a big hammer and I fear destroying anything of interest. Regards, Michael
  3. Hello Fossil Forum friends. It has been quite a while since I posted on the forum and decided to share a find that I recently collected. This specimen was found March 1st 2017 and after three freeze thaw cycles split open last week. Unfortunately the other half shattered into several pieces. I already know what the fossil is and thought it would be a fun challenge for forum members to test out their Mazon Creek identification skills. When I first glanced at it, I thought it was a bit of plant material and almost disgarded it. I will give one hint and state that it is an animal and was collected at Pit 11 which preserves many unusual marine fossils. The concretion measures approximately 2" across. I look forward to hearing members opinions.

  5. Thank you for viewing this post. Found a group of geodes/nodules that are covered with small fossilized shells. They were found in the southern part of the Pryor mountains of Montana between Bear Canyon and the Dryhead. Has anyone seen similar rocks, do they have a name, or know any other information about these? Thanks again.

    Fish Fossil ID

I came across this fossil at an estate cleanout. Does anyone know what it is? Thanks!
  7. I recently acquired some bulk samples of shark teeth from Morocco. Quite a lot of them appear to be Sand Tigers or Sand sharks (Odontaspididae). I'm working on collecting references to ID these teeth before assembling tooth sets. Since teeth from Morocco are so common, I thought this would be a useful resource for others. I'm just starting out and this reference is a good place to start: ARAMBOURG, C. (1952) Les vertébrés fossiles des gisements de phosphates (Maroc-Algérie-Tunisie). Notes et Mémoires du Service Géologique du Maroc, 92: 1–372, 62 fig., 44 pl Although it is in French and I believe a lot of the taxonomy has probably progressed from this time. Is there already a post on this topic? If not I would sure appreciate contributions of references for shark teeth for this locality. There may also be references from other localities that are relevant as they deal with species found in the Moroccan deposits. After some time we could organise references into something that makes sense taxonomically and if there is a demand for it maybe pin it. Thanks everyone!

    Petrified turnip?

I just need help identifying this... My great-grandfather found it while tilling a field in Northeast Alabama in the late '30s or early '40s... What is it worth? This one weighs approximately 10 lbs.
  9. Okay, so I've been collecting down by my creek in Oldham Kentucky. I have found plentiful brachiopods and corals, as well as the occasional gastropod. I have not seen any crinoids in the area. Here is a high-spired gastropod as well as some (Orothid? Rhynchonellid? Spirifer?) Brachiopods I recently picked up. The fossil in question that I need to identify is about an inch long. It's cross-section appears to have the shape of a wing, with an edge on each side and a curve in he middle. External lines stretch from edge to edge. (photos coming) I note that the shape seems to taper off in the direction perpendicular to the lines going across the curves.

    help needed with foreshore find

I found this strange fossil on the Durham coast foreshore in the north of England, an area know for its underlying Permian formation. It looks and feels different to other fossils I have found in the area (mostly crinoid stems). I was just wondering if anyone could give an identification if possible.

    Mystery skull

Here I have the front, left, and right profile of a rock that I came across next to a creek in Elizabeth Town, Kentucky. Given that it has symmetrical featuress on both sides it appears to be a skull of some sort. I need help identifying what this is. I was unable to upload a picture from the bottom but in the back there is what looks like an area for the spine to attach to the "skull." Help would be much appreciated.

    Is this an ammonite?

We we found this in a pile of limestone rubble in our garden. Is it an ammonite? It seems to have a head like a worm so we are struggling to identify it. It is about the size of the palm of a hand. Any help gratefully received.

Sold to me as Precambrian Algae?

Hello all, this was sold to me as a chunk of precambrian algae from a reputable dealer. However, I'm having trouble finding photos of anything similar. Is that what it really is, and if so, is there any way to know roughly what kind it is and how old it is? The precambrian era is a pretty big block of time... The largest face of the fossil has bands of hollowed-out "combs" spaced about an inch or so apart. From the other sides, top, and bottom, it's clear that these bands go all the way through the fossil in three dimensions. There are some combs between the banding, but the large number of them in the bands is distinctive.

    Bear , Beaver, Peccary?

Hi everyone! I don't know why I have not posted these sooner as I have had doubts as to their true identity for some time. The first two teeth were found at Big Brook. After researching I felt that they closest resembled #1 bear and #2 beaver. The third tooth I found at Brownies Beach. This I felt was peccary.I am hoping those of you with more knowledge than I have could help me out here. Thank-you in advance. Dave

Fossil Sponge? Found in central Tennessee

This was found on a relative's farm in central Tennessee about 20 years ago. It looks like a sponge, and a museum I took it to a long time ago said it was, but I wanted to know what you guys thought. Other fossils found on the same farm include shells, coral, and tool fragments made from antlers. Some of the holes in the fossil go all the way through. Whatever it turns out to be, it's pretty cool-looking.
  17. This dinosaur fossil is about the about 12 " long and I am not sure what part it is from. I was wondering if anyone could help me identify it.

    Who can it be now?

Hey guys! Have been lurking for awhile and finally decided to join the discussion after finding something interesting while out on a dig with my room mate. We live in Perth WA and found this. It's long and consistent in width. We've spent a few hours online but couldn't find anything looking too similar. Would anyone have an idea on what this is? We will probably end up going to the local museum or university but thought we'd take the opportunity to say hi Any advise is going to be greatly appreciated!
