I know these are often suspect, but this being both concave and convrx seems hopeful. Bit of a botch on neck and head, since that is on the other side. On most I see for sale, the bones are usyally darker. Is that down to a poor prep or are tge darker ones often colored/highlighted. Thanks. Getting a Keich never appealed to me, but if price stays low...

I won a keichousaurus at an online auction, is it real?

Short story: I won this on an online auction for a surprisingly low amount, which seems a bit too good to be true. Can you please let me know what you think of the specimen? Long story: My brother has wanted a keichousaurus but is too bloody stingy to buy one himself, so I compulsively bidded on one at an online auction. I won it for not a lot of money and may have a fake keich for my stingy brother. I guess he'd be proud of me for saving money on it (assuming it's real) .

Hello all, i was offered this keichousaurus and was wondering if someone has an idea if it’s authentic, judging from the photos only. The seller describes it as museum quality. And it’s supposed to be seven inches. These are the best photos I was able to get. It is supposedly from China from an old collection exported in the 80s. Best wishes

Hey guys, first time posting here, just hoping you could help me. I bought a keichousaurus for €300 and It came today, but I only came across the fact that they could be faked soon after buying (panic). The seller was from a reputable online store and it was part of a well known private collection that was disbanded. It came with an authenticity cert and was guaranteed to be real. Looking at everyone else’s specimens I am slightly worried/disheartened about the condition of my own. It is painted heavily I realise and I’m wondering what everyone thinks of it. Is it worth keeping or should I try sell it? Feeling slightly disheartened as I feel like I’m not even looking at bone, just all paint, and Its been a life long dream to be able to have my own fossil like this. And besides, as a grad student, I paid a lot for it which really took a lot of budgeting so it all lands a little harder. Any (hopefully good) thoughts/comments are welcome! Thank you! -
Hello! I am looking for a good keichousaurus for my collection. After a legal search I found these two. One is of a 28cm adult reptile, prepared with hand tools and I think in ventral position. The other is a juvenile reptile prepared with acid and 16cm hand tools and in dorsal position. Which one do you think is better? position and preparation ... Thank you!!

Hello friends. i am from Vietnam. People in my country dont know much about fossils, and we have no forums to ask about fossils. So, can you help me to finish my preparation? ------ I bought from internet I used sandblaster to expose specimen. Looks more and more beautiful: More bones were exposed. These are hands and foots. But when i use sandblaster, the bones were destroyed, too. So i stop using sandblaster, and dont know WHAT CAN I DO NEXT? ----- I see other Keichousaurus on internet. It's perfect: -------- I want to prepare my fossil like that. I am thinking about using Acid, but i havent used acid before. CAN YOU GUIDE ME WHAT TO DO NEXT? --------- I plan to use acid to soften the stone and expose the bones. Then continue using sandblasting gun (because now the stone is softer, sandblasting at low intensity will not destroy bones). Do you think so? Thank you my friends!

Just a question regarding the resin transfer method. I’m looking at a Keichousaurus fossil that I am considering purchasing. While the fossil looks good the seller has stated that the matrix was very unstable and he utilized the resin transfer method to stabilize the matrix. How effective is this method? The matrix looks very thin to me and any inquiries have gone unanswered. I do not have any photos of this specimen but I can direct anyone interested via pm to the very popular site the specimen is selling on. If that’s not a violation of forum rules. Thanks.

Hi guys, Recently I saw a Keichousaurus fossil at the bidding site. It is suspiciously cheap, the seller does not describe the condition of the specimen very clearly, except claiming it to be "authentic." Needless to say, it is already raising a lot of red flags. I am no expert in fossils. I just started collecting 2 months ago. I read some articles on TFF and know that Keichousaurus is one of the most commmonly fabricated. However, from the picture provided by the seller, it looks to me, that it could be at least partially authentic. The tail looks fake, but that head and neck looks ok to me. The body though, i couldnt tell. The color is too dark, it could be paint? May be some part of it is real under the paint? I think it has a very high chance to be a fake, but I dont know for sure. I am hoping that maybe someone can point to me, which part of it is fake.. Or real if there is any. Thanks

I am considering purchasing this keichousaurus hui attached and wondered if it is a real or a fake? As I know you need to be extremely careful when buying one of these due to the hight amount of fakes being produced. Thanks!

Acetone test for paint on fossil

Hello all, I started collecting fossils as a hobby a few years ago, trusting sources without question. I recently bought my first expensive fossil (Keichousaurus) online. I know they are often faked (or at least heavily restored) so I want to confirm that mine is legitimate. I did a scrape test which revealed more bone so that was good. However, I did an acetone test on a couple of the bones and the bones faded a little bit and the q tip I used picked up some dark grey/black. I also tried it on the matrix in three places which pulled up even more black on the q tip (more than the fossil had done). I was wondering if this is normal or not. Can you please help me determine if my Kiechousaurus is genuine? The picture shows one arm untouched (the top of the picture) which you can see is a bit darker than the bottom arm which has been swiped with acetone. Thanks for your help!

Hello fellow humans so, my friend has asked me to try to identify her late husbands collection and i am trying to do my research online about identification, and forgeries etc.. As he had a huge collection of books, taxidermy insects and these fossils, i am hoping that he would have purchased with scrutiny.. but who knows.. anyhow, im trying to identify these.. im not so aware of the different types of tribolites and if any are more rare than others.. also with the keichousaurus if tis real or not.. it seems to me like the digits may have been highlighted with paint, or maybe i have a bad eye, but i know thats a sign of forgery... but have also seen repots of genuine that have been touched up so to speak.... i haven't cleaned, scratched or changed anything since i got them.. i understand that it may be a lot of effort to help me out, besides being someones passion i have created a google photo album of all of the photos https://photos.app.goo.gl/yTbjFyGpTmr8BNix6 many thanks Daithi Dublin, Ireland

Seeking advice on newly purchased Keichousaurus

Hi! I recently purchased the following Keichousaurus Hui. Although I have a modest fossil collection primarily consisting of Trilobites, this is my first Keichousaurus fossil. I had a chance to inspect the fossil first hand in the store before purchasing and while it looks quite nice to me, I would appreciate feedback from this group. IMHO, the piece is very attractive and presentable as a display piece (and it carried a correspondingly 'display piece' price!). I don't have any major concerns other than maybe the piece is too nice as it is nearly symmetrical, the detail is very fine, etc. Here is what I have observed: 1) The fossil is extremely 3D with well defined relief. Bones are thick, heavy, dark and well articulated. The fingers and toes in particular are very well defined. 2) The neck loop is very unique and the 'physical loop looks right' in that the bones go under and around each other in a believable way. 3) I did a very light acetone test on most bones, including the fingers and there was a bit of soil that came up. I did not see evidence of ink, nor did any of the bone detail wipe off. 4) The head is very detailed with needle like bones that might be teeth? 5) The matrix is soft and from the side is clearly layered. The back side of the matrix is flaking off and has a section that appears a little glossy... perhaps epoxy of some kind was used to shore up a weak back side? 6) There are thin cracks/striations that cross the specimen. These line up with the natural lines of the animal, so it does not appear that it is a composite. 7) There are no bubbles that I can see. 8) There appear to be a jumbled lump of bones in the gut... maybe the little guy's last meal? I have a ten day purchase guarantee from the seller and would love to keep this piece for display. Would appreciate the experts in this forum to help give me some confidence as to the quality of this piece, thank you! Jason

Hello all! I just wanted to share a Keichousaurus I got in the mail today. It was an Easter gift to myself. It is an acid prepped specimen. I was a little worried about it but it looks excellent! The only noticeable paint is on the calcite line connecting the neck vertebrae together, which I have no problems with. Otherwise it looks complete, with all of its toes intact, and I wanted to share, because I am excited about it. I included pictures. There are a few tiny teeth in its mouth, but they didn't show up on camera. If you see anything off with it that I haven't noticed, please let me know. Thank you all!

I was shown the photo of a juvenile Keichousaurus from the type locality in Guizhou this morning and was asked to check its authenticity. It looks real at a glance but when I look closer, it looks suspicious. I was told that this is a man-made one. Take a look.

On this plate is a Keichousaurus and an unknown fossil. You can see there is something at the left hand corner, does it look like a jellyfish?

Hello everyone, I purchased a Keichousaurus from our favorite auction site. It was a reputable seller and using a black light and closer inspection it's real. Plus I have the added bonus of it having been dropped and split through as it was only packed with newspaper and not market fragile, then played footy with by australia postal service... so, yeh.. its' real but it's broken. The top left has crumbled and is discolored. and it has a crack through the tail. Can anyone advise me how to adequately repair this? I have been promised a replacement specimen which will be sent soon, But I would like to salvage what I can. Thanks in advance.
