From the album: MY FOSSIL Collection - Dpaul7
Keichousaurus Fossil Guizhou Xingyi China Middle Triassic (~210 million years ago) Keichousaurus is a genus of marine reptile in the pachypleurosaur family which went extinct at the close of the Triassic in the Triassic-Jurassic extinction event. The name derives from Kweichow (now Guizhou Province) in China where the first fossil specimen was discovered in 1957. They are among the most common sauropterygian fossils recovered and are often found as nearly complete, articulated skeletons, making them popular among collectors. Keichousaurus, and the pachypleurosaur family broadly, are sometimes classified within Nothosauroidea, but are otherwise listed as a separate, more primitive lineage within Sauropterygia. Keichousaurus, like all sauropterygians, was highly adapted to the aquatic environment. Individuals of this genus ranged up to 2.7 m in length, and had both long necks and long tails, with elongated, five-toed feet. The pointed head and sharp teeth in this genus also indicate that they were fish-eaters. Some recovered specimens feature an especially developed ulna suggesting they may have spent some time on land or in marshes. In addition fossil evidence suggest also a pair of fossilized pregnant marine reptiles called Keichousaurus hui, show they had a mobile pelvis to give birth to live young rather than laying eggs. Kingdom: Animalia Phylum: Chordata Class: Reptilia Superorder: †Sauropterygia Order: †Nothosauroidea Family: †Keichousauridae Genus: †Keichousaurus- 4 comments

This is a giant specimen of Keichousaurus, it measures a total of 46cm in length while mostly you would only see specimens measuring 20-30cm. There is something in its abdomen, would it be young Keichousaurus or remains of a fish?

Just sharing both of my keichousaurus, the smaller one at the top just arrived yesterday after being lost in the mail for MONTHS. I think they look great together!

Nope it's not another "Is it real post." We see many slabs posted inquiring if one of the guys is real or "fake." That auction site is full of offers of Keich plates. Has anyone ever seen another species preserved on one of these plates? I haven't. What did they eat? From their teeth I assume fish, but where are they? Perhaps they ate soft bodied inverts that did not preserve. However, one would think with that fine-grained matrix something would show up. Has anyone seen anything else preserved on one of these plates?

Pulled the pin on a Keichousaurus
davej posted a topic in Is It Real? How to Recognize Fossil Fabrications
Long time lurker here, figured it was time to sign up! I have been reading up on Keichousaurus out of China and how some are fakes and others are real fossils. Decided to pull the pin and pick one up, hope I made the right choice. The one toe that seems detached and the way the sternum bones are offset just seem too much work to fake. (I hope) Also the way the tail isn't perfect bone for bone Seller has a multitude of positive feedback. Please feel free to give your opinion.- 30 replies

Is it a real Keichousaurus?
Anngottesman posted a topic in Is It Real? How to Recognize Fossil Fabrications
Hi everyone! I'm wanting to purchase my first Keichousaurus and found one online I like. I know that buying online from China is VERY risky. This seller has 100 percent positive feedback and communicates well so I am hoping it's real. Can anyone tell by these photos if this specimen appears authentic? I don't mind a little paint as long as the fossil is real.- 40 replies

Hi guys! We just got some new Keichousaurs, but I'm afraid some of them may be fake. Their just to perfect, and what are the odds that they all died in roughly the same position? Any help would be much appreciated!- 28 replies

A Real Keichousaurus
indominus rex posted a topic in Is It Real? How to Recognize Fossil Fabrications
I also have a Keichousaurus which I bought from a mineral and fossil convention in Hong Kong, I believe it should be real because he had no other Keichousaurus slates, It has some thing in its stomach possibly a embryo, I lived in Hong Kong and it is still there so I hope is is real but it most likely is I will upload a picture of it soon- 16 replies
