I believe this is a Fenestella sp. from the Mahantango formation of the Devonian. Any idea which species ?

Here is the complete guide to the Mahantango ammonoids! Koenenites is only included because of two specimens (found by my friend and I) from Swatara Gap, which includes some Mahantango strata according to HynerpetonHunter. Tornoceras is the most common, Koenenites the rarest. Enjoy!

I have a fossil from Seven Stars (Mahantango Formation, Givetian of the Devonian) that is shiny and looks like some fish material I have. However, I am not an expert on bones and could use some help. Is this bone, and if not, what is it?

A day collecting elusive Mahantango Trilobites and Phyllocarids.
Dean Ruocco posted a topic in Fossil Hunting Trips
Hey everyone! The other day me and a few other experienced collectors spent the day out in the Mahantango formation. After moving a literal ton of material we each came home with about 3 or 4 complete trilobites and plenty of other neat associated fauna. I found 2 different specimens that are incredibly interesting/rare a complete trilobite, Dechenella (I have to take the head off the counter part and glue it back onto the body after prep it will be fully complete.). This means I have a complete specimen of every species of trilobite in the Mahantango except the elusive and rare Neometacanthus and Monodechnella. The other specimen I found was a Phyllocarid valve. I have never seen Phyllocarid material in the Mahantango but It makes sense that they occur in the Mahantango. Let me know what you think.- 4 replies

Hi folks. Nothing spectacular, but wanted to share a first ... for me. Wet ground and high winds toppled many trees in my area last summer. I investigated an uprooted pine and noticed the shale was packed with fossils. I carried a couple of chunks home and cracked them open. The first one revealed something I haven't encountered before. A Dipleura Dekai and an Eldredge ops in the same chunk. I hope to do some more digging in the spring. Any corrections are welcomed. Thanks,

I found this chunk of tan siltstone recently at a roadcut along Rte 443/Rte 72 near Green Point, west of Swatara Gap, Pennsylvania. It's mapped as Devonian, Upper Mahantango formation. There are a lot of detrital bits in the rock -- bryozoans, etc. But the stuff I can't identify are the bumpy, wrinkled imprints. In some places the bumps seem to coat the inside of a tube. The bumps are 1/16th inch or less in size. At first I thought bryzoans, but there's no detail on the bumps, like living chambers. I think it's the external mold of some stalked animal -- corals, sponge, starfish arms? Any help is appreciated! Bob

I’ve decided to change my Avatar, which I’ve kept since I joined TFF, but I wanted to send it off with a little information about it Zoophycos is trace fossil found around the world from the Lower Cambrian till present. It is either a feeding trace thought to be from polychaete worms. I had the chance to see and photograph it on my second fossil hunt, about a year and a half ago now. It was found at a site in the Devonian Mahantango formation of Maryland. I couldn’t remove it then, and it was gone the next trip. The other worm burrows were what lead me here in the first place, so I thought it was fitting it would be my avatar for a while. Here it is:

The high axial lobe of this pygidium reminds me of the Greenops. Should I put it in that collection camp ? Also, he has a little hitchiker riding piggyback. I assume it is an Eldredgeops that's been a bit distorted. Or is it something different ? Cheers,

More rocks I split (again thank you to @Rocky Stoner for them) and I found a few of the first one, a type of bryzoan? Next I have two things I notice do on a rock that has a trilo cephalon on it. . The thinner bar I'm guessing is a burrow, but I don't know what the thick bar could be. Lastly a bivalve? Any ideas on its identity? I have a few of them.
