    Mazon Creek ID confirmation/test post

As I mentioned in the tags and title, this is an ID confirmation and test post for me as I am planning to continue cataloging my Mazon Creek collection and will be needing some help with identification and also want to get comfortable with posting adequate photos. I want to confirm that this specimen is Lepidostrobophyllum majus. It is 64mm x 18mm at the widest point. The colors are correct, basically black specimen on gray matrix. It was found on private property near the intersection of Lorenzo and Jugtown Roads. (Is there a way to make this photo about half this size?) Adding one more photo to make sure I've got it down. Are these photos good enough? Cause I would like them a bit sharper. The second is a Macroneuropteris macrophylla, I think (no hairs), 95mm x 30mm.

    Mazon Creek Nodule Unknown

A Mazon Creek nodule popped open a few days ago. At first I thought it was nothing. But in the right light, I have hope (hopefully not false hope) that this may indeed be a find. If this were my Ordovician matrix, I could envision a trilobite. Maybe it mimics a horseshoe crab!!!! During my hunt, I did get to see a horseshoe crab found by @flipper559 I will cross my fingers waiting for the experts to respond.
  3. Today I had the great pleasure to meet a Fossil Forum member @Mark Kmiecik who also loves Mazon Creek fossils. I knew I was near his residence and I contacted him and he told to come on over. We visited for a couple of hours talking about cataloging, past fossil locations that we hunted and looked at some of his collection. Below are pics that I took of a couple pics of his fossils to look at better detail using an I-Phone. Does anyone have any idea what this next one is? Sorry I did not use a scale of any type since I was just playing with the phone. The fossil itself is about 1 1/4” across, the whole concretion might be a little over 1 1/2”. Mark was also kind enough to give me 6 boxed plates of unprepared Green River fish that he purchased from Ulrich’s Fossils in Kemmerer, WY, about 13 years ago. Thanks again Mark, hopefully I can find some time to tackle these.
  4. Since they are so common, I don't keep many coprolites unless I notice they have interesting inclusions. This is one of the more interesting inclusions I've found to date. It measures maybe 2mm in length. I believe it is the branchiopod Pemphilimnadiopsis ortoni (what a name!), and was hoping for a second opinion. @deutscheben, I know you've found some of these before. Any thoughts are appreciated.

    Tully Monster?

Hi all, I've had this Mazon Creek fossil in my collection for a few years now. It is labelled as a Tully Monster, and seems to match up with other Tully Monster fossils I've seen on the forum and online, but I am by no means an expert, so I would appreciate any help with confirming the ID!

Mazon Creek - Leaf or wing?

Here's a new find from the I&M trip last weekend. The nodule was full of indeterminate plant fragments, and I almost tossed it until this one small bit (~1cm in length) caught my eye. Maybe a wing fragment or am I being hopeful? The texture is much different than what I've seen in plants, but that's a bit hard to capture in pictures. I can try to get better pictures tomorrow in the sun if needed. As usual, any thoughts are much appreciated.
  7. Not the most exciting start to my 1st mazon creek freeze/thaw attempt, but at least its not blank. I am guessing some kind of plant material

    Mazon Creek 8-28-21

Fossil Forum members were well represented at the Illinois Canal Corridor Association's Mazon Creek collecting event this weekend. My wife and I were able to make the 11 hour drive out Friday to join them and we enjoyed a productive afternoon in the creek Saturday gathering several buckets of concretions to take our first crack at freeze thaw. We also found a number of already opened specimens to wet our whistle while we do our best to be patient. Here are some of our better finds even if some are a little water worn. New to us, so the trip is already a success regardless of what the unopened concretions may be hiding. A few close ups: No clue about these last 2, the 2nd may just be worn and isn't the center plane so I will probably try to freeze/thaw it. It was nice being able to get out and chat with others while collecting and learning about a new to me location. Special thanks to @connorp for putting up with all our questions.

    Mazon Creek Rhacophyllum

Here are two interesting Mazon Creek flora nodules that popped yesterday. I believe they are both assigned to Rhacophyllum. If so, I am excited, I have not come across this "genus" before. Rhacophyllum cornutum Rhacophyllum fucoideum I am pretty confident on the IDs but confirmation is always great. I am quite interested however in the second specimen. It appears that there is a root-like structure emanating from the central base. I cannot find many images of R. fucoideum online so I am not sure if this is significant or not. As usual, any thoughts are appreciated.
  10. This concretion opened today. I cannot decide if it a poorly preserved syncarid or more hopefully a partial centipede (Mazoscolopendra?). Any thoughts? @RCFossils @Nimravis @flipper559 @bigred97
  11. I thought I jump on the bandwagon of Mazon Creek and show my little collection. I’ve been picking up the odd fossil here and there to add to my allotment. This has been over the last 5 years. Originally I was introduced to the ironstone concretions by Ralph in one of his great auctions to support TFF, which I was lucky enough to win. The first 3 added after the collection photographed in the drawer, I could do with a little help for identification please. 1: sea cucumber, 2: worm, 3: Has a label but it is only the seller’s info ? thank you help and for looking. Mazon creek help

Hey Folks, Shrimp and plant material? Plant material and plant material? What are we looking at here?
  14. Hi all Just a quick question , I have been very interested in the material from Mazon Creek since I won a great auction lot from Ralph that included a few fine specimens . While looking today online I spotted a trilobite pygidium that was labelled Mazon Creek it looks like the right type of siderite concretions but it could be from some where else . So what do we think? I don’t think they was native to Mazon creek but maybe transported there by floods ?

    Mazon Creek Find - Millipede?

I am somewhat hopeful that this is an example of Amynilyspes (a pill millipede), but would like to get another opinion. It was found open and is a bit worn. @Nimravis @bigred97 @flipper559 A close up of the "tergites"

    Mazon Creek Beginner

Hello all, I'm a long time lurker on the forum and a new member! I recently went on a trip to the Mazonia-Braidwood State Fish and Wildlife Area for the first time and am hoping for some assistance/confirmation on my IDs. 1. An imprint of some species of Pecopteris. 2. I'm fairly confident this is a partial Essexella adhere 3. Possibly also an Essexella asherae, but I suspect it also may be wishful thinking Thanks in advance for any assistance! I've got a few small nodules going through a freeze/thaw cycle now, so fingers crossed I'll have some more luck.

    Mazon Creek id help

Hi everyone, I was going through some more of my Mazon creek material and could use some help with ids I have some ideas what these might be, but I'm still pretty inexperienced and would really appreciate some help. Thank you in advance!
  20. I had contacted someone to register myself regarding a private hunt in a creek. They serve a picnic afterwards. I was to receive verification a month ago and none has come. Does anyone know how to contact the couple offering this? I have lost their information. Mike

    Mazon Creek Fossil ID Help

Hi all, I just opened up some concretions from the Mazon Creek area in Illinois, USA and was wondering if I found anything. About 90% of what I opened were blanks. I've attached the three concretions that I think are something and a picture of what I was considering blanks. Thanks in advance. Blanks) 1) 2) 2 one piece opened up) 3)

    Mazon creek purchase (again)

Hi everyone I recently spied this mazon creek nodule on an online auction site and stuck in a cheeky bid as I thought it looked interesting. Listed as "unidentified worm from Mason creek" Perhaps preservation is too poor for a positive ID however if anyone has any thoughts as to ID please mention. Total length of feature around 3cm.
  23. I received an e-mail from a good friend this week asking me if I wanted to go with him and two other of his friends collecting at a place that would fall in the area of Pit 4. Knowing that I always loved the stuff that I had collected in Pit 4 in the past, I decided to go with him to this spot, which was new for me. The weather was great this morning, around 57 degrees and it only sprinkled for about 5 minutes. Since this was a new site for me, I was not as discriminating as I might be in other locations. I only stayed for 2 hours since I have to head home, shower and then drive another hour into the city for my sons 38 Birthday. Once at home and prior to me leaving for the city in a few minutes, I decided to count the concretions. In the 2 hours I collected 239 of them, not including a couple that were open, shown in pics below. I found Annularia, Neuropteris, Calamities and Myalinella meeki open. Here are some scenery pics, another foliage filled place. Here are pics of concretions as I found them and the open pieces.
  24. Hi! My son (10) has been very interested in Mazon Creek fossils for years, and has been asking to go down and try to hunt for fossils there. He’s quite serious, knows a lot about Mazon Creek for a kid, and has experience with both all-day hiking and moderately successful fossil-hunting. Is there any chance that someone does (or would do) a guided trip there? I would feel so much better trying the trip if we had more expert help. I know he can handle a long day in the sun hunting - but I honestly don’t have the skill to be 100% sure of what I’m doing, and I certainly don’t know exactly where to look, especially if the fossils might already be picked over by now. Do you know of any organized trips, or anyone who might be willing to take us out there for a fee? Thanks in advance!

    Mazon Creek

Greetings! My grand daughter and I are planning a trip to Chicago in May. And we were excited to locate a place close to Chicago to hopefully find a fossil or two to take home with us. We have no idea what we are doing, only that we want to do this. We are looking for someone who is experienced and knowledgeable about Mazon Creek. If this is you, please contact me via PM. Thank you
