Been ill so wandering around my tracks and saw this today. I have pestered Spencer with a million “no those are chirothere undertracks” but this I really wonder about. Remember it’s Middle Triassic so three toed tracks are rare or nonexistent depending on who you ask. Let me know what you think. The track above the rule is rotodactylus

I’ve made a lot of progress. I have one large main section and a smaller section that I still haven’t gotten connected up. The red circles are the manus (front) tracks that Dr Klein wanted me to be sure I got. I’m still digging out more tracks but the rocks have gotten smaller and more irregular. The individual pictures are what I’ve found in the last couple days. Dr Lucas is coming in September to take what he needs for his research

I’ve made a lot of progress on the reassembly. One more large satellite piece to join to the main body. Pictures don’t show the tracks very well but give you an idea of the scale. About 17’ long. Hope to get back to digging (and efficiently marking the slabs this time) in the next few days.

Found a new set of tracks recently. Still excavating and reassembling. Tracks are very deep so must be soft mud. Not super distinct. Much larger than the usual tracks.

Trackway paper presented
RetiredLawyer posted a topic in Partners in Paleontology - Member Contributions to Science
Hope this isn’t inappropriate for this forum. For everyone who was following my excavations, Dr Klein presented his findings. Dr Lucas is coming back later this year to pick up a few more tons of my tracks.- 13 replies

Hi everyone, There is a fossil that was found in a wash at the level of the kaibab formation below a pour over. It was found in two separate pieces. Shortly up the wash is the moenkopi formation and above that is Pliocene to Miocene basaltic rocks. The formation above the kaibab was a conglomerate of many different rocks eroding out of the hill and into the wash. The moenkopi is the most recent formation besides the basalt in that area. I did my best to match the formations to the area, but I am basing my information off the geological maps for the location. The Chinle formation is about the only one I know by sight. Let me know if you need more information. I couldn't find anything other than small marine fossils listed when searching that area in PBDB.

I’ve moved up to the higher levels of my property where I’m finding bones and coprolites. Still hoping for a big score of a full skull.

Finally found a good Chirotherium rex - the largest chirothere. Most of them have been pretty smudgy.

Had a four day visit from Spencer Lucas and Hendrik Klein to study my track finds. Lots of photography, made tracings of the tracks. They took a few truckloads of slabs for the New Mexico Museum of Natural History and Science and will be coming back to collect the large trackway. It was a fascinating week.

These are a few of the more unusual tracks I’ve found. The tridactyl looking tracks are really interesting since they shouldn’t be here in mid-Triassic. The one that looks like a human foot is particularly creepy

IMG_2038.MOV Here’s a video of my collection as of May. I numbered them a while back and got to 185. That doesn’t include the trackway pieces or what I’ve added since then. It’s been almost exactly two years since I found the first track. Not bad for a sixty year old guy working alone lol.

It’s taken over a year of excavation, hauling and reassembly but I’ve got the trackway essentially completed. The chunk at the top needs to go at the bottom of the picture but my yard has a slope where it goes. Spencer Lucas, Hendrik Klein and four others are coming in October to study my collection so I’ll have help moving the entire trackway to finish it. 28’x18’

Been finding a few of these types of tracks recently. Will be curious to see if they actually are tridactyl dinosaurs.

Second picture is what appears to be a tridactyl track. First picture might be also. According to the paleontologist there is discussion of the possibility of dinosaurs being around in this time period.

Been digging my new area. Finding large area with what seems to be deep mud. Lots of partial, poorly impressed tracks so far. From the exploratory holes I’ve dug the area seems to cover at least an acre so hoping to find some good things.

Found this today. Rock is about 12-14” long. Paleontologist thinks it looks organic but doesn’t know what it is offhand. I’m thinking fossil unicorn, but I could be mistaken. Anyone?

Started hitting another good load of rocks. Found the one huge chirotherium. Some interesting tracks I can’t identify too.

I’ve got 186 pieces that all pretty much fit together. I numbered them and took photos to send to a paleontologist who is going to try to photoshop them together. I got the first two together.

The trackway is about 18’x12’. It’s looking good. Still have a few more pieces to go. And a couple really big ones to drag into place.
