Hi. I have been collecting fossils since I was very young. My main interest has always been dinosaurs but I live in Wisconsin where dinosaur fossils are not found. When I was about 4 years old I realized I was finding horn coral and crinoid stems not dinosaur teeth and small bone sections. However, through the web I have been buying and collecting dinosaur fossils for a couple years now and renewing my childhood interest. I have been reading and learning about identifying types of dinosaur fossils and this site has been a great resource for me.

    Hello from California

Hello everyone, Bit of a late introduction, but a new amateur fossil collector here checking in from California. I only started collecting last year and so still have a very small collection so far; wish I could fossil hunt myself but that's unfortunately not a realistic option, so I'm exclusively buying from online shops. Recently I've been obsessed with bizarrely coiled (or rather uncoiled) heteromorph ammonites. Structure is function after all, so it's intriguing what evolutionary advantages such various, ridiculously cumbersome shapes would've provided to offset the loss in mobility! For instance, here is an cool little paper on how the U-shaped body chamber of the Ancyloceratina may suggest a stationary "hooked adult" stage of life: (https://academic.oup.com/mollus/article/80/4/354/1021718) Anyways, I have been scouring the internet for something that really strikes my fancy, but haven't found it yet. The huge, bumpy open-coil Didymoceras species are my holy grail, but I generally like any impractically open-coiled heteromorphs. Pleasure to meet you all! I've already received a lot of help from some of you on the ID and "Is it Real" threads, so I look forward to my time on this forum.

    New from ohio

New here hopefully learn more about what my family and I have been collecting for last 7 months. I have been studying and can identify some common rocks and fossils but it's a serious uphill battle starting from nothing. Couple bins of random things we have found.

    New to Fossils!

Hello! My name is Sam Swartley I am a wildlife Photographer and collector of bones, I just recently moved to Colorado for the winter and have been exploring new hobbies and am getting into fossils. I’ve been doing a lot of reading and research and I would love to get out and find something for myself. I would absolutely love to find ammonites. I live in north eastern Colorado but am also really close to Kansas. Is there any good spots out here? Thanks!
  5. Hello all! I'm happy to become part of this! Let's see, introduce myself! Well my name is Amanda, I was born and raised in a small town in North Central Kansas! I married my best friend and highschool sweetheart! We have 3 beautiful kiddos, that we love to drag around with us, while we go spelunking for fossils or anything that looks cool! I love everything outdoors! I'm still pretty new at this whole fossil thing! I have picked up rocks all my life, but a few years ago, I found my first Interior Seaway, shark tooth! And that's when I knew I had to learn as much as I can and find as many cool things as possible! Let's do this thing!!

    Morning all!

Hi everyone! I was into dinosaurs when I was a kid, but my then stated goal of being a palaeontologist kind of fell by the wayside in my teens. I've always tried to keep an eye on cool stuff going on though, and I randomly saw the Ladbible video of Mamlambos giant crab prep on FB last week. Somehow the concept of fossil YouTube hadn't occurred to me, so I spent a bunch of time watching him then decided to see if there's anywhere in Essex with fossils. Turns out Burnham and Mersea are both accessible to me fairly easily, so my plan is to get out there some point next year and satisfy my inner 7 year old. I'd like to make a trip to Whitby for ammonites at some point as well, always thought they were cool. Outside of fossils, I'm a big tabletop gamer. I play Magic as well as various rpgs and GW games. PDX, Hello

Hi from Portland, OR! This website has been a helpful tool for me as a non member but I'm finally getting a little deeper into prep work (Green River fossil fish specifically) and...I HAVE QUESTIONS. Lol, I figured I would finally sign up and say hello before I officially start attempting to understand what I'm doing. Thanks!

    Hello from NC

Hey from NC everybody! I'm new to fossils but have been an avid outdoor enthusiast including artifact hunting and some metal detecting (also newbie). I have had some beginner luck for starts which has deeply hooked me with shark teeth and other fossil hunting. I know very little about fossils which has led me here so it's nice to join the group and can't wait to get to know everybody.
  12. Recently I found a fossil, the coolest one I have ever found. I was trying to figure out what it was and this forum kept coming up in my searches. Hopefully I can learn how to identify my finds and make a few friends along the way. Thank you!

    Hello from Minnesota

I own a couple of fossils and have found a couple of shells. Some of the fossils I have that I bought include a small dimetrodon rib section a couple species of trilobites and some other cool things like a crocodile tooth and some ammonite fossils. Came here for help with fake fossil id and to learn more about fossils. Thank you

    New Member from PA

Hello everyone, I am from Pennsylvania - Western side. I have become interested in collecting rocks recently - as well as fossils. Currently interested in all fossils. Don't really have many fossils at the moment, hopefully I can find some more and share them here with everyone. Might need some help with IDs! Glad to be here.
  15. Hello all! I hope your hunts are going well. You can call me Mara or Sam, whatever floats your boat (or, rather, sifts your teeth? haha). I live in PA, but love fossil teeth, so I've traveled to MD a few times and have my eyes set on NJ and VA for future teeth-hunting shenanigans. Oh, if only the Carolinas and Florida weren't so far away! I've been in the hobby for a short time, but I can already tell that I'm going to be at this for years to come. I've attached a picture of my favorite find thus far, a 1/4" Hemipristis serra tooth that I uncovered on my very first fossil-hunting trip this past August. I'm planning on going to the Potomac on foot on the 20th, and then will be joining a DVPS member on a hunt in January as well (any clothing suggestions for cold weather beach hunting?). My dream finds are a large crocodilian tooth, a large H. serra tooth, a large lower cowshark tooth, and a whole meg of any size. Take care everyone, and may the fossil gods be kind to you!

Hi! I'm Nanotyrannus35, I'm 13 and in the 8th grade. I want to work at paleoadventures when I grow up. I think that being on this forum will be very fun and I hope I will learn a lot.

    Hi super newbie

Hi, I'm a very amateur dirt digger and daughters professional rock hauler. I've carried thousands of pounds of "just pretty rocks" all over the western U.S. for her. And we'll some of her choices (ok and mine, can't blame her for everything) have been our coolest finds and my most precious memories. Most of our shark teeth came from Turtle Beach on Siesta Key, FL. Our bones, plates, claws and skin(?) Came from all over (just ask) when she was between the age of 4-10 years old we packed the car with gear, grab a map and she'd point while I drove. So I've hiked, camped, fished and sometimes just scratched my head wondering who would put a child in charge. So that's my fossil journey origin story. And learning about what we found is the goal. Thanks for any information, J. Stockhus Emily oh how I miss our days of discovery!

    Hey from England!

Hi! I'm an trainee archaeologist from England, and my job involves both excavation and post-excavation work. I have an undergraduate degree in Archaeology and History (majoring in archaeology), and am hoping to specialise in osteoarchaeology in the future. I joined the forum as part of my job involves writing bone reports, but unfortunately I have been given no resources for identifying the faunal remains. Whilst I do have some of my own resources, I've found this forum incredibly useful and am hoping to get some aid in identification in the future! Have a great day ☺️

    Hello!

Hello! I’m a 19 year old from Alberta Canada that has been interested in fossil hunting. My love and interest for prehistoric animals began in childhood, but was reignited when I randomly decided to crack open a rock near the summit of a mountain a few years ago, only to find what I believe to be several small aquatic plant fossils and possibility shell fragments. Since then, my fascination with fossils has only grown, and I commit more and more time to searching for fossils during hikes and other outings. I have collected several things I believe to be fossils from multiple sites in Alberta, but I have no clue if I have fossils or just oddly shaped rocks. I just finished cleaning/ scratching away most of the Lichen on the most recent rocks I brought home, and will post pictures in the ID section tomorrow once they are dry. I finally decided to make an effort to find out what I really have, and am anxious to see what people have to say! I’m worried that that “fossils” I think I may have found will end up just being extra weight I carried on long hikes, but regardless, I am determined to find some fossils, and am currently planning my first excursion dedicated to finding fossils.

    cordial greetings to all

Hello everyone, I found this forum a couple of months ago and the truth is wonderful, especially for beginners like me, I am from Nicaragua, here there is not much talk about fossils nor are there deposits or places to buy fossils, even so I enjoy the life of the past, it seems great to me, and even more great the work of everyone in the forum providing information and the beautiful fossils they have, greetings to all
  21. Hello, I am new here on the forum and I have been fossil hunting around Las Vegas for a year now. I am happy I found this forum to see other peoples fossils and share some of my finds.

    Hello from Oklahoma

Hi from Oklahoma. Please forgive any errors or posting faux pas. I did read the intro info but I might have missed something. And any tag suggestions would be welcome as well. I don't really go searching for rocks or fossils as much as they find me. As a landscaper, I spend a lot of time in their domain. I have a couple clients with big rock gardens that have indulged my love of collecting a few of their pretty or interesting rocks here & there. I know literally nothing about the rocks and fossils I've found other than they all caught my eye in some special way and have been found in the context of a flower bed. There's one in particular that sent me searching for answers. I'll post it one the fossil id forum next. I'm so interested to learn more. I have nieces and nephews at the first love of dinosaurs stage and would love to be able to teach them something too. I've added some pictures of my favorite ones. If anyone can point me in any directions of further reference or study I'd appreciate it so much. Hope everyone is having a lovely, happy, healthy & safe day. Thank you for your time. Stacey

    Hello! New to the Forum!

Hello! I am new to the forum and wanted to introduce myself. I've been collecting fossils since I was very young--being fairly close to the Peace River in Florida in my youth sure contributed to this! I would like to learn more about the fossils I have and also ones that I acquired from a family member a few years ago. I started showing my collection to my kids and I figured I'd better know what I am showing them.
  24. I have already posted a few times but thought that I might as well introduce myself. I am a college student from Boston currently studying near Philly where I will be in the fall. Some friends and I decided to take an excursion to Coreys lane a few weeks ago and that was my introduction to fossil hunting. I have always been fascinated by this stuff but have just started taking a serious interest in actually looking for fossils myself. I'm currently in western CT trying to find the source of some Devonian fossils I found in imported stone but anyways I just thought I would introduce myself.
