Hi there, Finally jumping in after reading for months. I've been interested in geology since taking a course years ago (ok, decades ago). I take a lot of photos of all kinds of rocks and formations that have interesting shapes, patterns, colors and enlarge some for wall art. I was sorting out an old pile of rocks/stones on my property and saw features and patterns on second look that I'd missed before and set out to learn more about fossils. I've read more about paleontology in the last month than I ever have, just as a hobby. I'll get a few photos put together in a separate post. Thanks for this forum, the helpful guidelines and especially for welcoming all of us. DM

Hello! I’m a new member but I have checked the forum many times to identify my fossils and shark teeth. Usually I’m up by Calvert cliffs Maryland but recently I found a nice tooth at Jupiter beach in Florida, if anyone has any ideas on what type it is that would be awesome! Im still new to fossil hunting and identifying!

Hello! I’m new to the fossil forum, and fairly new to hunting/collecting although fossils have always fascinated me. I caught the bug for hunting when I vacationed for the first time at Folly Beach two years ago. A lesson on the beach with the delightful and knowledgeable Ashby, plus a fortuitous trip to Morris Island, sealed the deal and I have been increasingly obsessed ever since. My collection currently includes the following (99% as-yet-unidentified): one week’s worth of specimens from Folly Beach summer of 2022, one week’s worth of specimens from Folly Beach summer of 2023, a medium-sized estate collection acquired locally and all marked as coming from Edisto dating from the late 1970s through the early 1990s, a collection of approximately 300 small shark teeth of unknown origin acquired locally at a thrift store, and several fossils of aquatic specimens found in Lexington KY where I live (found on a creek bed site on my brother’s farmland, as well as in limestone-quarry rock piles). My family will be spending one week this summer vacationing at Edisto, and I look forward to the opportunity to find even more land mammal fossils than I have at this time. I have largely focused on shark teeth on my two hunting trips, and will be excited to hone my skills pinpointing other types of shapes, textures and colors on the beach. I plan to use this space to start showcasing my collection and getting help with identification. This area is very new to me, so I am eager to learn from all the experts here on the Fossil Forum!

Hello Everyone.. New Member From San Bernardino CA
HideousCorrectness posted a topic in Member Introductions
Hello! My name is Elaine Scott. I am a new member to the forum. Exploring the mountains in the high desert and rock/fossil hunting is a hobby of mine. I have a small collection of interesting items. Some of which I will ask for help identifying, I look forward to feedback! I see there's soo much content to explore on this site I'm pretty sure I'll spend the next several hours (and many more in days to come) scrolling through it all. I hope everyone has a great day! -
Hello all. I live in Parker County which is due west of Fort Worth. I'm on about 7 acres and the land was part of the shallow sea that would wash in and out during the cretaceous period. My property has an infinite amount of rocks the bubble up through the clay base. I often find various fossils in the rocks. I'll share some pics and questions in the help me ID this section. OH--I tried to upload a profile pic. Actually, tried a couple of different pictures. For some reason it kept giving me an error. The two pictures were less than 100 kB, so not sure what the issue is. Possibly something to do with the security software on my computer.

Good morning, I was referred to this site and needed help identifying an unusual rock that seems to he growing something from the inside out and it's getting larger. It has a dark red color with a metallic grey on one spot and the other spot is dull Grey but with dark red in it as well. I used a flash on a few of the pics to get different views of it. It's super heavy as well It's so strange. I'm hoping someone can help me out here on this site. If I did this wrong, I apologize. Thank you very much everyone.

Hello, I just joined the fossil forum - I have an amateur interest in fossils and a few items I have purchased or been given over the years (I received several fossils form my late grandfather). Most of the items I have came without information (identification, age, locality... etc.) My goal is to learn a little bit more and see if I can ID any of these items to a passable degree. Thanks, - Connor Long

Hello everyone, My name is Thomas, a young man from the province of Frisia in the Netherlands, with a passion for anything historic, especially roman, dark ages, viking and medieval times. I have big display case at home with a lot of historic items, part of which I find myself with my metal detector. A while ago I bought a megalodon tooth of 14.1cm at an auction and it lit an interest in fossils. Past months I bought more interesting fossils and stumbled upon this forum. I hope to learn a lot from you guys, explore this forum and thanks!

Hello everybody! I'm currently a senior at UW, studying something entirely different than geology. However, I've become obsessed recently, and have spent the last year learning about geology. I'm taking my second geology class this quarter with an incredible human being, Prof. Roger Buick, who has inspired me to become fascinated with Sedimentary Geology. I've now gone on my first field trip to observe the Lincoln Creek & Blakely formations in the Chehalis River region in western Washington. I was able to find some amazing fossils, but I'm unfortunately ill-equipped to preserve or identify them. I'm really excited about learning from - and hopefully contributing to - this community. Thanks for having me! MudDauber

I am from Missouri and I have always since i was little looked for arrow heads and stuff like that and picked up rocks that I would think was interesting. My boyfriend thinks it's weird lol. My friend came over and saw some I had in my "rock garden" and she thinks some are fossils. I have extra time on my hands with stay at home restrictions and started walking my creek bed looking for possible fossils instead of indian stuff. I have a few oddities that I wanted to share and try to find out if it's something. I've been reading through some forums for the last week or so and decided to join.

My love for fossils started quite a number of years ago. My great-grandparents ranch was located next to the Pacific Ocean that had a nice outcropping of fossilized shells. I have a cluster of them that I collected while I was in my teens. I have found numerous fossils at various locations throughout the USA. One of my best finds was in Coral City, Iowa in the parking lot of Outback Steak House. I will be posting a photo of this find in hopes, someone out there can help me identify (I have a good idea, but would like others opinion) and explain why certain effects took place. Hope to make a contribution to this Forum. Jim

Dear all, I am Dimitris 30 y.o. from Greece. My attraction and interest for whatever was below earth crust was obvious from a very young age. All of my vacations included some kind of abandoned mine, cave, strange rock formation or whatever clue you could find before the Internet era and first period with 50 something kb modems.. A recent trip to Morocco resurrected my interest for fossils. Having studied petroleum engineering, I am familiar with geologic maps (which you can find easily online), although I struggle a little with terminology because some words are different in English. My purpose joining the forum is to exchange experiences, read about preparation of fossils and even find company for fossil hunting trips. Especially the last would be nice since its a hobby scarce to find. Καλησπέρα to possible members from Greece, здравей to Bulgaria! PS> Currently living in Sofia most of the time, North Greece and Serbia are my most easily accessible areas. Attached one nice hippurite from my yesterday hunt, first after 15 years!

Hello everyone! I am a brand new member and I find myself here mainly (though not completely) because I moved to Fort Worth, TX a couple years ago and I keep finding fossils in my yard. My curiosity, which usually starts with me picking up a rock and saying to myself "What on Earth is this?" finally drove me to the internet to find some answers. I identified (sort of) a couple of things but others not so much. Anyway, I stumbled upon his form, decided to join, and am genuinely enthusiastic about it! I have always been fascinated by fossils...and now it looks like I'll be able to learn a few things as this appears to be a very well organized group. Thank you for allowing me to join!

Hi everyone! It's great to be on the forum and I'm excited to be engaged and learning/sharing with you all. I'm from the UK and have many fond memories as a child, going to Scarborough and Whitby with my parents on holiday. I was always desperate to visit the fossil shops each time I went, even investing in a little fossil hunting kit at the advice of a friendly fossil shopkeeper. I never really found anything special, but I did find a few little pieces here and there at Whitby as a kid and it just made the trip so much more memorable. I'm now an adult and have been considering on and off for years to get back into the game on a more serious level, to start a new collection from scratch! My real name is Richard. I chose InvestableCards as a username as I collect and deal in trading cards under this name, particularly Pokemon. This has been a lifelong hobby - turned career for me. Coincidentally there was a set of Pokemon cards known as 'fossil', where some of the Pokemon (made up creatures) happened to be resembling dinosaurs. Anyway, that's a little about me. Again, I'm very happy to be here and I'm excited for the future now that I've decided to start collecting again!

I have already had the pleasure of using this site for about a week and it has been incredibly helpful and enlightening! I am a college student from Vermont who loves fossils more than anything. I've been visiting myrtle beach since I was 3 and every time I go I come back with a caseload of fossils(especially sharks teeth, I have thousands) and I've always loved looking for anything that interests me, from arrow heads, to fossils, to old bottles thrown in dump sites years ago. Essentially finding things is my passion haha, but fossils are the most important to me, I was hooked by the first tooth I ever found I still remember it like it was yesterday. I'm very interested in paleontology and am looking into schools where that can be my main topic of study's the one I'm at now doesn't have the option. This site really urges me to do so as I realize my one true passion is definitely involved with the long past. This forum is truly amazing and I hope to make a contribution every now and then so a big warm hello to all TFF members
