Well we took a stroll through the streams today before they lock us down here and thought I’d share our finds,the tooth and very picture are actually in shallow water,was a beautiful day and gonna shelter down now,everyone be safe.

Hi There! I was out fossil hunting with my son at Big Brook in NJ: https://www.fossilguy.com/sites/bbrook/index.htm We found the following item and wondered if anybody had any ideas? I can post more pictures and a ruler if it will help further - just let me know This was found on the side of the brook close to the main parking area just downstream from the bridge Many thanks for all your help - heard great things about this site Cheers, Phil

Hello. The following items remain in my "take it back to the lab to analyze" section of my findings. I have not been able to id any by looking thru books and online references. It just may be that they are nothing but unique patterned rocks. However, I do know I have at least one claw although I can't tell what it came from. Any help is always very appreciated. Did my best with the pics.. And thanks in advance.

Hi everyone, I have this partial fish bone from the Late Campanian of New Jersey, 72 Ma. I have never seen this type of bone structure before, but for some reason it reminds me of some type of rostrum (billfish?). It is a little over an inch at greatest dimension. Any ideas are appreciated!

I was fortunate enough to follow up my Potomac River trip with a Big Brook trip yesterday. I had to see a client in the morning that is a couple of miles from Big Brook. So I decided to swing by and jump in the creek. For the first time this winter there was someone else hunting while I was there. I was fortunate enough to run into another TFF member (brad hinkelman) in the creek. Back to back days in different states running into different TFF members. What the chances... I guess pretty good. Anyway, enjoy the pictures. is this a drum fish tooth? If this is it is my first! not sure if the top two or bottom piece is anything.

Hi everyone, I have this strange fossil from the New Jersey Cretaceous. When I first found it, I thought it was a sponge. Now I am kind of confused about it. It has a lot of “buds” on it that are embedded on a bony(??) “base” that has striations (might be hard to see this in pictures). I am really hoping that it is a fish mouth plate. Another thing is that there appear to be more small “buds” emerging from the bony(??) “base.” I appreciate any input! Hey everyone, i have this interesting Croc osteoderm/fish mouth plate. I am leaning a lot more towards Croc, but this one looks pretty different than usual because of the dimples being a different shape and arranged in a row; maybe it’s just from a different part of the body. It would also be complete if it’s Croc, which is unusual. Size is about 3/4”. It is definitely not a concretion in case some pics are misleading (some bony structure is still visible on the back of the specimen when looking at it in person). @non-remanié @frankh8147 @Trevor @Plax @Al Dente @MarcoSr Thanks!

Hello everyone, I got a question about the ID of this coral. I brought it to Ralph Johnson and he said that it is either a coral or belemnite, but when I was consolidating it, I realized that it is porous, which is very much like a coral and unlike a belemnite. The specimen consists of two pieces and is about 5/8” long. Has anyone seen a coral like this? @non-remanié @Plax @Al Dente @MarcoSr @siteseer @frankh8147 Thanks, Joseph

Hi. Took my bi-weekly trip to Big Brook this week. Had the whole place to myself again. It was not to cold. Enjoy the the pics. Any feedback is always greatly appreciated Mark Scapanorhynchus Texanus Squalicorax Kaupi top row- Archaeolamna kopingensis middle- Carcharias Samhammeri Bottom row- sawfish Ischyrhiza Mira Cretolamna Appendiculata I’m assuming modern bone because I’m not that lucky this pic is the bottom of the above picture bottom right. Not sure if it is anything Found a black m&m. Oh the humor. I don’t think everything below are concretions but just want to make sure before I toss it.

Hey everyone, I got this tooth from Jersey that struck me as being something different at first glance. The general shape, very pronounced cutting edges, and concentric layers visible at the base made me think that it’s not Mosasaur, but rather some type of Croc. If it’s Croc it is something other than Thoracosaurus which makes it a unique tooth. It’s about 3/4”. Thanks! Joseph @non-remanié @frankh8147 @Al Dente @siteseer @MarcoSr @Carl

Hi all, I'm relatively new to this forum and have been fossil hunting for a few seasons. I'm certain I've run into a few of you in the NJ brooks, since some have mentioned checking out this forum :). I'm hoping to be more active on this forum! A few months ago I found this fossilized bone on a gravel bank. Based on the concave end, I can only surmise that it is a distal femur or acetabulum. Happy new year! I had a very relaxing and enjoyable 30 degree day in the creek yesterday. Tried out my my first pair chest waders yesterday and they where awesome. Anyway I feel like I had a decent haul. Last time I went out I almost threw out a hybodont fin spike. Thankfully I posted a picture before I did anything. It caused me though to think everything was something yesterday. There I’m going to make a separate post of some items I’m not sure of. Enjoy the pics. Any thoughts on I’d would be greatly appciated. Hey all! New to the forum and happy to finally have something to share. Went hunting in Montague, NJ two days ago on the first of the year and had some luck. I found directions to the site, "Mountaintop Rd. Fossil Beds" using instructions from the first entry on this list. Looks like it's all in the same town as Trilobite Mountain, which I unsuccessfully searched for early on in the day. Eventually I decided to try my hand at this second one before sunset hit. It's a shame that somebody seems to be using this property to hunt animals instead of fossils, but using some discretion you should be able to get in just fine. To my delight, my first fossil hunt yielded many interesting specimens. Shells and more than a few instances of Phalangocephalus dentatus. Wondering about how i might prep this one, which I found inside a larger hunk of rock utterly clogged with shells and trilobite fragments. Would it be useful to take a dremel to it? Also found this strange negative, wondering if anybody more experienced than myself has opinions on what could have left this impression. I hope to do many more fossil hunts in my lifetime. This was a perfect day for me, I can't wait to get back out and do it again. Cheers everybody!
