Any ideas what this bone is? I found it on Casey Key, FL near Venice Beach. Looks modern. Thinking maybe an astragalus or epiphysis of a bone?

Took a day trip down to Casey Key, FL near Venice Beach. Found lots of small shark and ray teeth and some really nice shells.

There is very little on the internet about fossil hunting or access to the Myakka River. I had a great canoe trip yesterday in a pristine wilderness. There were lots of turtles, birds, and a lot fewer gators (5) than I thought I would see. The rumor was that the Myakka River was deep and dark --- well not the 4-5 miles that I traveled across. The river tended to be 3-5 feet deep with some mud but mostly sand bottom. We launched at Laurel Road East end, Nokomis and headed upstream. Occasionally we would stop and probe, stopping at cliff places when we saw that brownish crumbly rock or shell layers. There was a number of shell faces. Most (all?) of the shells we found were modern, but larger, spikier, pristine versions of modern shells. I was especially enamored of some Kings Crown relatives and small bivalves with both halves containing mud-shell mixture. We were probing for gravel but the sand was at least 3 feet deep. We went a mile past a spot called "Rocky Ford" and ran into isolated small gravel spots. We saw two sets of kayaks on the journey. One had launched downstream from Lower Myakka lake at 8:30am and crossed paths at 12:45pm. We moved shallow layers of gravel into the sieve and found only marine fossils. These had the same black-brown coloration of the Peace River. Little teeth, many broken: Bull, Dusky, Snaggletooth, one isolated small posterior Meg and many Sand Tigers. Almost all the sand tigers were broken at the root. There was little/no ray material and not a lot of turtle. I was surprised that we found no gator teeth. In the very last sieve, I had my best find of the day -- TWO tilly bones. One is really nice. I was pretty pleased with my first trip on the Myakka. Lots of great scenery, some great shells, some marine fossils and an understanding of the 4-5 miles of river I explored. I may go back to this section but not necessarily for the fossils. I will figure out a way to explore the river between Lower Myakka lake and Rocky Ford. All in all very satisfying trip.
