    Odd find in NSR, TX

I'm new, so pardon any breaches in etiquette. I found this in the North Sulphur River in Ladonia, TX, in a gravel bed. The place was pretty picked over, but for the most part what I did find I was able to ID. This, however, I have no clue where to even begin: It may be hard to tell from the pictures, but it's slightly flattened so that I had to hold it to show the profile of the ribbed pattern on each side. My google-fu has failed me (or maybe I'm just a noob), and it seemed unusual so I thought it'd be worth asking some more knowledgeable folks. Let me know if more info is needed. Thanks =)
  2. Convinced my girlfriend that Sunday would best be spent crawling around in the mud looking for fossils instead of brunch and mamosas on Lower Greenville. Turns out she's a champ. Logging a solid 7 hours on the NSR and schooling me on how to find Mos vert. We arrived about 8 a.m. and met up with @David E. . Who also proceeded to school me on finding Mos vert and how to properly pronounce several words/names. Thanks Dave! You are truly a gentleman and a scholar. Weather was great. The mud really wasn't to bad compared to the last few times I've been out there. We had some interesting finds including what I believe is my first mastodon enamel, a plasiosaur vert, and what I think maybe part of a globidens mosasaur tooth. The 2 big Mos verts and big fish vert bottom right were found by my girlfriend along with the fat bison/cow tooth. Let me know if any of you would like close ups of anything.

    Found at North Sulphur River

We were out with the Cub Scouts yesterday at the NSR. Found this, unsure of what it is. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Hi y'all, Worked a fatty day in an area that got me about halfway to the Sulphur. Got me about a half day on the river. I wanted shark teeth so I went to a bridge that has gotten me good results before. When I reached the bottom of the bridge I saw no footprints(it was muddy at the bottom) so I had high expectations. Considering previous finds I thought with the river rise a few weeks ago I'd be finding at least a bazillion shark teeth. It didn't work out like that. A lot of the gravel bars had mud or a dusting of silt over the gravel that was there. Despite this I found some good stuff. I'll post some close ups of things for ID. Here's the haul. Including a perfect fish tooth and jaw with a few teeth. The jaw piece is my first. Didn't find a bazillion shark teeth but managed to find some new stuff and still make some money at work. Great Friday.

    Central Texas Fossil ID

Not a particularly exciting ID request, but these have been driving me crazy. I pick up tiny fragments of these in the North Sulphur River and Post Oak Creek, and picked up some bigger chunks while hunting in central Texas lately. On the "exterior" the striations run vertical, but on the cross sections the striations are horizontal. On larger chunks there are sometimes a layer of pocketed material on the back. Is it petrified wood, shell fragments, some type of enamel? I keep grabbing these things without knowing for sure what they are, and I'm ready to toss them if I can't figure it out. http://imgur.com/a/qwKtl Any help is appreciated. Thanks y'all!

Hit the Sulphur today to see what the rains washed up. I checked out 4 different bridges and hunted at 2 of them. There were trucks at 3 of the 4 bridges. Only ran in to one other guy out there. Older guy that said he'd been hunting the river since the 80's. Many of the gravel bars were still under water getting washed. I imagine that in a few day there's going to be a lot of goodies on those bars. The mud was brutal sinking nearly to my knees at times and it took me hours before I found anything of note. But it payed off. It was definitely a day of firsts for me. I found my first Mos vert! And not just one but 5! The big guy was the first one I found. I believe the other big one is either fish or shark. I also finally found the fabled red zones and found some great detailed ammonites of different verities/species. Then as I'm sitting down to eat a bagel and BAM! I found my first arrowhead! Had a great day!

I was excited to see the 4 ft rise this past Monday so I took the day off. Little did I know that when I woke up this morning, there had been an even better water level rise last night. I got into Ladonia as the sun was just coming up so I went ahead and hit 3-4 bridges to check the water level at each before I made up my mind which one I was going to hunt off of. I ended up at my favorite spot and I'm glad I did. The water level looked like would be about waist deep but there's so much silt/mud underneath that the deepest parts were just above my knees. In fact, at one point, I was deeper in mud that any water level the whole day. I hit a patch of mud that went half way between my knees and waste. To get out, I went over elbow deep in that same mud to crawl out. Needless to say, when I walked back through that area, I chose a different path. The rain we had this week cleaned the gravel bars pretty good. What we really need is a good spring cleaning to clean the bottom. I had plans on going back out tomorrow to try a different bridge but to be honest, after 7 hours of walking through all the gunk, I'm exhausted. I know there are a few of you that are planning on going out tomorrow and I wish you all the best. If ya have someone to hang with, you'll be better off.....especially if you find your self in a very muddy situation. Here's the finds. Some mossy verts, few boney fish pieces and a little ol' point that had the tip broken off (looks like an beat up Gary).

@Buffalo Bill Codyand I headed out to the North Sulphur River yesterday on a long muddy trip. We headed west from the 2675 bridge about 2 miles including a 20 minute hike along an expanse of river to get to what we hoped would be relitivly untouched gravel. That area of gravel proved to be the least productive of the entire trip. Luckily the gravel within a mile or so of the bridge proved more fruitful. We also had a wild boar siting to keep things exciting. I'm curious if anyone can ID the pieces in the top 2 rows. Also I'm very interested in an ID of the bone above the quarter. I'll post some close ups shortly. Are the strait pieces in third row tooth enamel? If anyone would like close ups of anything let me know.

    Mosasaur tooth? From NSR.

Hi all I went out to the NSR today and found this small tooth. I am thinking that it is a small pterygoid tooth from a mosasaur but would like other's input. Thanks! Bret
  10. It was a beautiful day for a long North Sulphur River hike. Very few finds for such a long walk but it was good to get out of the house. It will be good hunting again after a heavy rain.
