What a day on the river. The 'trail' into the riverbed is shale for about half the way down, and with all the recent rain, it turned into slippery mud. I landed on my butt 3 times while climbing down into the riverbed, once almost ripping off a fingernail in the process. The heavy rains last week had taken the river up to within 10 feet of flood stage a few days ago, and it showed. Collapsed banks, one HUGE cavern high up on the bank just below a soon-to-be-doomed tree, and washed-out shale chunks covering most of the riverbed. Couldn't see much for all that wreckage, but once that shale dries & crumbles a bit, the next moderate rain will REALLY reveal a lot of good stuff, I'm sure! As a result, a couple of hours of wandering the riverbed (and almost slipping & landing on my butt in the water a couple of times) only yielded 2 pieces worth taking home. Hello all. My buddy and I went to the NSR and Post Oak Creek this weekend. I was hoping someone could help me identify a couple of finds. The first is one was found on the bed of the NSR. It appears to be bone, but it is very heavy (perhaps from soaking up all the grey clay since it was embedded in the bed). The second was found at Post Oak Creek and appears to be bone, kind of like a finger type bone (digit). We also found some nice teeth and nice baculite. This is my first post about my finds, so any help would be much appreciated. I was also wondering if anyone could provide some advice on where to look for fossils at the NSR. This was my second trip in a month (or ever for that matter) and I am having a really hard time finding anything. The baculite is about the most identifiable thing I have found. Should you look on the bed, the cliff side (it's all grey!), mouth of creeks, the creeks themselves...? Thanks in advance. Glad to be a member.

Good day hunting at NSR creeks. For the first half of the day I helped a friend retrieve a Civil War grave marker from a creek. We researched it and got it back to the family who will return it's proper resting place. We decided to hunt a few hours and had some good luck. My friend Mick found two of the largest Tylosaur verts I have ever seen. I found a nice size broken Tylosaur vert, two smaller Mosasaur verts, bone fragment and a nice piece of Rudists. The huge verts in the last pic were found by my friend Mick but thought I would share the impressive pic.

Very recently I received a PM from a fellow fossil forum member, zoocosmolina. She contacted me to inquire if I was interested in a girls trip to NSR. After few email exchanges we both got very excited to have a companion to go hunt with and decided to hit NSR as soon as possible. We met early Saturday morning at a local coffee shop, stocked up the caffeine and hit the road. We had both joked about meeting a stranger and being stuck on an all day trip with a possibly a crazy person… or being kidnapped and never heard of again… I think it took us about 5 minutes to realize we were both safe, and pretty much made from the same mold. The 1 ½ hour drive to NSR seemed like 15 minutes! We had a lot to talk about and yapped the whole way… “We are here already??!!” What a BEAUTIFUL day!! We had picked a perfect day for a trip. Sunny, little breezy, 70’s. And the river looked gorgeous, first time I had seen it so close. I am not sure if it was the breeze in my ear, or the river whispering my name. The water looked calm, and the level was very manageable. We decided to give the waders a shot. After few good laughs and jokes about them, that turned out to be a very good decision – we could walk across at any point and hop from shore to shore, sandbar to sandbar. We saw couple of sets of footprints, but they faded away after we crossed the spot where the water was the width of the whole river bottom. There was not much wind at the bottom, and I found that my over-all style waders were way too warm for a day like this, so I ended up “dipping in” to cool off pretty often. The water was quite chilly! We ended up walking down quite long way, picking few good finds here and there. My eye is not quite trained yet for the grey shale, everything looked the same! Zoososmolina, however, found quite a few mosasaur verts! My find of the day was a double-vert. Continuing below...

I normally clean my North Sulphur River fossils with a little Simple Green and warm water but it doesn't seem to work on the freshly exposed fossils with the hard grey shale on them. What is something safe that I can try without damaging my finds? All feedback is appreciated.
