Hello Members, Greg from Western Washington. I am new to The Fossil Forum. Started collecting rocks a couple of years ago when I was beach combing looking for colorful rocks to tumble and display. My interests became focused when I continued to come across examples of bones and coprolite creating the urge to pursue the next best fossil find. Many questions linger for an inexperienced amateur. 1 - Why has only one Dino from the Jurassic Period been found in Washington State ? 2 - Are fossils found with all their original pigmentation intact ? 3 - Does meat fossilize ? Does Succulents plants fossilize? 4 - Washington law states that any Vertebrate fossils found belongs to the state and is unlawful to keep? Maybe I read or interpreted this wrong. Makes you not want to post photos of any finds. In two years, I have found examples of all which I have questioned. I believe Dinos did exist in Western WA as I have found fossil both pre and post Jurassic.

I found this on the beach at Padre Island, Texas and it looks like the meat of a walnut type nut only fossilized. I cannot scratch it and when dropped on a hard surface, it sounds like glass. It's 7/8" across. Any ideas? I'm just an amateur rockhound with some background in geology. Thanks!

I'm new to this site and I'm trying to find some more information about some interesting things I found in my area. While exploring the lakeshore we found some odd looking round pieces of what we thought were rocks. We found a few that looked like a hickory nut with about half of the outer shell still attached. They are hard like rocks but look exactly like hickory nuts. We came across a patch of slate and a few pieces had circular indents in them. We kept exploring and found a piece of slate that had one of the nuts still embedded in it. The part of the lake bed we were exploring is normally under water when the lake is at full pool. Could these actually be petrified hickory nuts? Has anyone else found items similar to these?

I was guessing some sort of accreation but when a friend dropped it I became confused. Any help greatly appreciated. Found on friends property in the foothills of Denver, CO. USA near the Fossil Trace GG (yes they actually have fossils imbedded in cliffs and other features on the golf course.) P.S. I ordered a centimeter graph pad and hopefully this will be last "improper" post

In a collection I recently acquired, some of the fossils in the collection had no ID with them. This fossil looks real familiar to me but I cant remember where or when I saw it. 27mm or a little over an inch long. Any help is appreciated.

Hello all, my name is Sam and I'm new on this site. I need help trying to figure out if this rock I just found yesterday is a fossilized egg or nut. Measures 1 3/4" in length and 1 1/2" in height. I think it's a fossilized nut. Any help will be appreciated. Thanks!

Hi all, This fossil was found along one of the tributaries of the Crystal River in Florida It appears to be some sort of fossilized fig or nut. Does anyone here have any ideas as to its age or species? A fossilized horse tooth and a Savannah River arrowhead were found nearby. I believe the arrowhead is more recent than the fossils.

Found this little fossil in chert/flint gravel, and heard a rattling. Upon breaking open, there was a smaller lighter coloured fossil inside, leading me to believe it is some sort of nut. It has what looks to be a scar at the bottom, possibly for attaching? it split neatly along the line into two parts.

Hi to Forum members; I am an amateur rock collector who likes to look for fossils. For the most part I have not found anything fantastic but I am hopeful. I kindly request any information and or comments about a recent flint specimen from my back garden in Ipswich, Tuddenham Road. I have other photos of the flint that show unusual structures. On those photos, I used my photo app to adjust the exposure to get more fine detail. If it will help, I would gladly share. Also from my back garden, I found a petrified seed/pod/nut shell. Can someone help me identify what it is. May thanks! Munchy2

I dug up an old post about what the user suspected to be a fossilized walnut. It looks a little too similar to my suspected nut to be coincidence. Both were found in Indiana. Original thread

I figured I'd throw this out to the masses- does anyone have a spare nut (item 39448) for an ARO 8315? This is the piece with 2 flats near where the air comes in. Evidently, I over-tightened mine and ripped the threads off. A very quick search online shows one possible source in California and one in the UK, but if anyone here has an old unit they're keeping for parts, may as well try to keep it in the "family". Thanks in advance.

I found this fossil on a job site. I look regularly and usually only find crinnoids (geodized) and maybe a few native american artifacts. But for the most part just flint, geodes, and other random stones. But my son and i are both very excited about it. We have never seen or heard of a fosslized nut. -
I was looking for fossils around a bunch of small rocks and came across this, it was heavier than the other rocks and seems to have a “soft” feel and not hard and scatchy. Any info is appreciated

I hammered this free from a chunk of ironstone. Ironstone matrix. I thought it was completely round like a marble nut the more I inspected I see some traits that this is a designed specimen with a symmetrical pattern and some unique patterns. Any ideas?

My daughter and I took our Husky down to the river (more like a creek in the summer) to play earlier today. The river is so low right now you're basically walking on a rock bed. I found what looks to be a small petrified walnut. I tried searching the net but couldn't find anything similar. The closest I found someone said it could be a type of sponge? The lines on it kind of curve around to the back to where it looks like it could have hung on a branch. I know nothing about fossils but we have found a few from just being out hiking. We found what we think is a petrified deer tooth a few years back. I was able to id it online. This little nut thing is definitely wierd and I can't seem to id it. I guess it could just be a rock that's grooved up from wear. If I had to guess it's some kind of fossil though. Any ideas? Thank you for the help.
