I found this small specimen in the Platteville Formation (Middle Ordovician) in Wisconsin. My first reaction was that it might be a graptolite fragment, especially as it looks to be preserved as a carbonaceous impression. However, I would appreciate a second opinion. Thanks!

While doing some prep on some Neuville Fm material (U. Ordovician, Quebec), on the slab I was working I bumped into this. Roughly 5 mm wide. I am thinking crinoid bit, but not quite sure. It doesn't seem to match the main four found there, or possibly a component piece that baffles my crinoid-poor knowledge! ***EDIT: Looking over the faunal lists, the star-shaped plate makes it a good match for a rhombiferan.***

Looking for help identifying and prepping a cephalopod fossil.
Neurodynamic posted a topic in Fossil ID
Hello, I am an amateur fossil hunter whos level of knowledge is pretty limited. I love going out and hunting but my ability to identify and prep what I find is quite limited. I found this cephalopod fossil near Cincinnati Ohio a couple of years ago and it is by far my best find ever. I'm typically fine picking at or grinding away with a Dremel trying to prep my finds as they are usually small bits. Nothing I'm worried about ruining. This is something different and I'm pretty apprehensive about working on it. I read there isn't much harm in gluing it back together and I attempter this. It looks ok but 2 pieces didn't take so it's still in 2 pieces. There are also many very thin pieces of shell that came off the back when I dug it out. There also appears to be a small trilobite in the underside of the rock. What I would like to know is more information on the species it is, as well as if there is a person or place I can send it to get prepped. For identification purposes here is what I know. The area it was found in Cincinnati Ohio in a bed known for Cambrian era fossils. Estimated age is 450-500 million years. I am not a rich man so I cannot afford to spend too much on prep but it is the best fossil I've found so far. I would be willing to spend as much as my budget allows on getting it cleaned up and put back together. I do not know what to expect price wise so if anyone has a guestimate please let me know. Thanks ahead of time to anyone that can help me out.- 7 replies

I spotted this thing in a hash plate and I'm wondering what it could be. I'm assuming it's a fragment of something like everything else it is jumbled with, but I don't really recognize it as anything. Found in SW Wisconsin in the platteville formation.

I've got this big hash plate that I collected last year and I somehow didn't notice this thing poking out until now. It looks like an algae to me. Found in SW Wisconsin in the platteville formation.

It's been a long time since I've written a trip report. Not that I wasn't hiking, I was hiking like mad and finding stuff. Just didn't get around to documenting in the latter part of 2020. Too much craziness. A couple of days ago, I went in search of an extremely elusive shale formation, that contains some of the loveliest ferns I have seen. My records show I specifically planned 13 hikes last year trying to find another exposure. That was over 100 miles of fruitless searching. Zero. Zilch. Well, two days ago I found another small exposure. Scenic photos of the journey follow starting with walking uphill on an Ordovician rock bed The Ordovician transitioned into this Silurian bed with Devonian formations rising above it on the left Although fairly stumble-free walking this was relatively steep. That day I ascended 2,800 ft with my big pack full of tools, food and drinks. A nice shattered chert nodule in the Devonian. Just to show not everything has fierce thorns here, some 'Cushion Buckwheat'

Subject is a bit off topic, but while out exploring a local canyon for Ordovician fossils, I chanced upon this strange exfoliating section in a formation known as the Valmont. Would anyone happen to have knowledge on the processes behind this? The area was not conducive for finding fossils. This is 'as viewed' from the side. It is not taken from above. The bed is in a normal horizontal orientation but exposed in a staircase cleft. Sedimentary rock formation Found in the orange box in this photo
