Found this ammonite or gastropod this afternoon between Capon Bridge and Wardensville. The formation is supposed to be Oriskany Sandstone, but it looked like siltstone not sandstone. Is this an ammonite or a gastropod? It seems too big to be a gastropod to me, but wanted to check, as I've never found an ammonite in the area before. Thanks! Matt

Hi friends. This is strange for me to understand. I went 3 mi. eastward to the nearest Oriskany Sandstone formation and picked up a modest 40 lb chunk, brought it home and busted it in two. It was relatively hard, coarse grained but inside, there is a cavity, well not really an open cavity but the center is very soft, almost loose sand with what looks like real shells mixed in. They are whitish and very fragile, just like you'd see at the beach. I can easily pick/rake the loose sand out with a needle point and completely expose each piece of shell. (only did 2 so far). Coul

Today I go at two fossils I collected in western Maryland neer Hancock. They are of the oriskany formation and because of this they have been metamorphosed into quartzite, meaning the preservation is not the best imaginable. This may make an ID impossible but I'm going to ask everyone any way. The first is a brachiopod or a mollusk, the second is a gastropod of some sort. More pictures can Be taken and I will try to provide any relevant information. Tell me what you all think!
