  1. Hello everyone! His is my first post on here. My name is Hayley and I’m located in Daytona Beach, Florida. The past two weekends, we made trips to Brownville and Wauchula Florida to hunt the Peace River. On the 18, we found a small meg tooth on the last scoop of the day, along with lots of other teeth and bone fragments. On yesterday’s trip, I found some larger teeth and a completely in-tact (what looked to be a sand dollar) at the last place we stopped at. I will post a picture of it tomorrow because it’s sittig on my desk at work. Anyway, it’s really enjoyable and the conditions are very favorable right now. We have set up a trip to visit again next weekend, and are looking for some fellow hunters who are interested in tagging along. I really want to get on some big meg teeth, and have been scouting out a few decent and promising locations. We have a kayak that we use to get up and down the river. Is anyone interested in meeting up next weekend to hunt?

    Is this juvenile horse?

First time out this year. Peace River miocene to pliocene. Kind of a poor specimen, but intrigued me because it is so small. Is it juvenile horse? Friend said thought it might be 3 toed - but no isolated protocone. Please help identify. Thank you!
  3. Yesterday a group of TFF members got together in Bowling Green Florida for a canoe and kayak trip down a section of Peace and to do a little hunting along the way. At 7 am I was greeted by quite a few folks I’ve had the chance to hunt with over the last few years. I generally do a lot more talking and less digging on these opportunities but was insistent on trying to pull a really nice piece out and knew I’d have to put in some real time hunting. Due to that, I didn’t get any “ in situ” shots of our fossil hunting brethren so you’ll just have to take my word for a that while it was a little cool in the water, we all spent a fair bit of time putting in some serious digging. No one pulled out a whole mammoth tooth but there were some decent Megs found and other odds and ends. Attached is a pic of my better finds. A decent Meg, a few hemis, chunk of mammoth tooth, deer antler with skull and some rare for me mayumbensis I would like to say thank you for all the folks that made it out yesterday, as always it was great to get out with you all. Feel free to throw up some pics if so inclined @Sacha @Grimlock@Calvin Jenkins @beachbum @megaholic@Cam28
  4. Peace river rat

    Strange vert

Pure speculation, gator? Found near the peace river in Arcadia. Any help, is appreciated.
  5. Peace river rat

    Large bone

I know this is some kind of joint, but what joint or animal? Only thing I can think, large mammal, I have about 6 guesses.
  6. Peace river rat

    Some peace river stuff

Thanks to Digit! I have a real camera! Thanks digit! Expect many pics!
  7. Peace river rat

    Mystery vert

My guess is Dugong or whale (leaning on dugong) Very dense and heavy, thanks TFF!
  8. Peace river rat

    Rhino tooth?

My best guess is Rhino tooth? Also, it has few worrying cracks, is super glue a good idea? Thanks.
  9. Peace river rat

    Possible osteoderm?

First off, apologies for low quality pics, only a lap top camera here. I was hoping some one can ID this oddball. My guess is some kind of osteoderm from a glyptodont or tortoise? I will try to update this thread with better pics. (have to get my friends smart phone and have them e mailed to my computer. Sorry double post, tried to delete it but cant seem to. Can a moderator please delete one post?

    Small mammal jaw

Greetings to all. I found this little mammal jaw fragment last week and I have yet to identify it. I have done some research and haven't found anything that matches it, thus far. Small mammals are definitely not my area of experience (assuming I have any at all). So, I decided opt for the lazier option and let those with more knowledge do the work for me Any help would be greatly appreciated. Let me say that the pics might not be the greatest, so I apologize beforehand. The camera on my phone can only do so much with the little stuff. Needless to say, it was found in a local creek in Southwest Florida close to where I live and the dime was added for scale. Thanks!

    partial Capybara I think

Pretty sure this is part of a capybara tooth. Am I right? Found in the Peace River

    ???Vole jaw???

Found by a friend in the Peace River. Is this a vole jaw? I know it is some kind of small mammal but never heard of it before. Each mark = 1/2", so a little less than 1 1/2". Sorry for the pic quality - best we could do at the time.
  13. Found yesterday in Peace River. I guess scapula of something. Would you please ID. TY
  14. Peace river rat

    Peace river

Just a few pics of my peace river finds.
  15. I've been working a hole for the last 3 visits to the river, more because it's a nice change of scenery for me, than because of the results. I seem to bring back more things I've never seen before from this spot than any other I've been digging in recently. First of all, here's the take for the day......1 very nice meg, 3 decent megs and the rest. I was wondering if this bone might still be identifiable, even though it's pretty beat up. The back side is now worn featureless so I didn't picture it. I think it looks more like a complete bone which is very badly worn, than a broken end off of a long bone. Thanks for your attention and time.

A couple old finds to ID

Both of these fossils come from Peace river in Florida. Judging from the edge and size I'm wondering if the top one is from the scapula of a mammoth/mastodon? Either that or something from a whale. Any ideas? The bottom is an armadillo scute that I once mistook for scrap bone and left in the scrap box until being rediscovered. Any way to tell if it's Holmesia septentrionalisis or Holmesina floridanus? Thanks

Hunting the Peace River, please help!

Hello Everyone! So my mom and I are going to be flying to Florida in the beginning of March to do a shark tooth hunting trip in the Peace River. (Will also be a vacation) Can anyone please give some tips on the best places to stay, parts of the river to hunt, best guided tours, anything will help!! We will be flying into Sarasota Airport.. Also, if anyone knows where you are able to rent shovels and shifters for a few days, since we will be flying I can't bring mine. Thanks in advance! Holly
  18. Found in the Peace River. Am trying to research more myself and love Prisitis Bone Gallery. Think this looks like astragali (?astragalus?). Is that part of the ankle bone? Am I right? What species do you think this belongs to. Thank you.

    One more peace find :)

Thanks for all your help. Here is one more. Does not stick to a magnet. Any chance this is fossil wood? From the peace River.....thanks

Could this be a mammoth toe bone?

Found these fairly close together in the Peace River. I think #1 is mammoth toe bone (height 3 1/4"). Need help with ID. Dn't have a clue what the other two are - ???related??? I know, i know, #2 looks like it came from a BBQ with those smooth skills cut edges! What do you think?
  21. Found this yesterday in Peace River. I think it's a fossil, but may be modern. Didn't know how long to wait to do flame test. I think it is an incisor but really just guessing. What do you think?
  22. Hi Folks, I have a few oddballs that caught my eye on a recent trip out to the Peace. I need some help ID'ing these. I have searched the web, and have an idea what a couple of them might be, but I need a more experienced eye to confirm or deny. If anyone can identify these, please do chime in. This first one looks like some kind of weird crab shell, but it does not seem recent. Photos show both sides. What the heck is this thing?

    The Scenic Peace River

These are just a few photos of my favorite Florida river, the Peace. I've explored many over my lifetime of hiking, camping, and fishing, but fossil hunting made the Peace my favorite. Now I want to do all of my old activities on the Peace (the aformentioned hiking, camping, and fishing). Today, I saw a catfish the size of my forearm (I have long arms). He hung around, checking me out, waiting for me leave to his hang-out spot. I couldn't get a photo of him, by the time I went back to the canoe to fetch my camera, he had bugged out to elsewhere. Then, right on cue, as soon as I put the camera back, he returned. I recall my dad saying years ago that the biggest catfish are not good eating because they have worms....not sure if that is true, just another dad-ism. I need to get my fishing license again, so I can catch dinner while we are out hunting for fossils.
