Came across this piece of petrified wood awhile back and was just noting the odd red markings in the second photo. Any idea what would cause such unique markings on petrified wood? I've never seen such before...

Now that the weather has officially snowed me in. I’ve gotten around to posting some trips I took during the summer. At request of my friend, I won’t reveal the exact location of this area but if you know where this is you know there’s abundant petrified wood. I can say it’s close to Capitol Reef National Park (definitely not in the park ). Here’s the stratigraphic column for the area. The petrified wood we were looking for were in the Petrified Forest member and the Shinarump conglomerate member. The area is a long hike in. So even though we saw abundant wood, we could only take what we physically could carry for a couple miles with our camp gear.

Hi folks! My wife and I love to collect shark teeth at Englewood Beach in South West Florida. I came across what looks to me like a small piece of petrified wood, but it seems like it's unusual to find such a thing in that area on the beach. Can you help me determine what I've been carrying around in my pocket for a while? Thanks very much! -Adam vonNieda

pretty sure these are petrified wood but a couple have me thinking bone? ... I find it fossilized in several different ways so makes it hard to distinguish sometimes. also finding a variety of different types of woods.

at first glance I was thinking petrified wood but in looking at it it looks kind of hornlike possibly and antler or fragment? but then it may just be another odd rock.

Hi all, I found what appears to me to be petrified wood, but it wouldn’t surprise me if it was something else. It resembles a wood chip that I nearly ignored it. Any ideas? And thank you in advance:) (found at the arbor hills nature preserve in Plano, Texas) [Edit: forgive my newby status and allow me to include additional details: this was found very near to a creek at, as mentioned, Arbor Hills Nature Preserve, in Plano, Texas (north Texas...one hour south of the Oklahoma border). Below is a link to more info re: minerals, vegetation, etc., of Arbor Hills, but for quick reference, trees most common in the preserve are cedar oak, cottonwood, red oak. Hope these additions help!

I'm thinking of creating an online 3 D version of my website, but not sure if the image will display on different setups.... I've included a link to an example of a piece of petrified wood (a piece I purchased). I have done some experiments in the field with my setup, I think 3 D in-situ photos would be possible. I bought some petrified wood on online, and in the pictures the wood was wet to make it look a lot better. My question is is it okay to coat it with lacquer so it keeps that really nice look?

Hey all you wonderful folks... I have had this rather heavy piece of what I think is petrified wood for a few years... I found it in outside of jasper park ( Alberta Canada) along a river area or in British Columbia area again along a river I can’t remember which... I was excited when I found it because it looks sooo unique and it is quite heavy for its size my would be a lb or lb and half... any way so I am really looking at it today and now I am questioning if she is petrified wood lol please help me I “wood” (aha) appreciate it. Thank you

was out looking today found several ... I found this reddish stone and decided to look at it closer are those seeds in it?...or something else?....and it looks like it has veins in it.... is it petrified wood or some type of coprolite? Tue Sep 18 15-16-55 shows the blood veins looking markings best...they run all through the stone. I am rather new to all this and I must say it is like a scavenger hunt!

I found a few pieces of this in a creek in an area where the water flows pretty good. Can anyone tell if it is petrified wood or just rock? Found in Post Oak Creek, Grayson County, Texas. Thank you in advance.

Hello all. While working in Southwestern Kansas (Kiowa or Comanche County) I stumbled upon this little guy that has caused some confusion in my office. I have a few coworkers who are old geology majors and other coworkers (including myself) who are just plain old rock hounds, but we all cant seem to come to an agreement on this find. The rock hounds and I think its a weird piece of petrified wood, with some cool quartz features on the back side. The geo majors are intrigued over the "botryoidal quartz" formation on the back side, along with a very small cluster on the front, and are having a tough time wrapping their heads around that type of formation being on a chunk of petrified wood. One thinks he sees flow marks, but concedes that those marks could also be xylem and phloem... Any ideas out there on what this is? If I need better pictures let me know.

Just wanted to share the beauty of this recent carboniferous find. I just sliced this yesterday. It still needs some work and i need to finish the other half, but take a look at the vascular cell structures of this fern tree (psaronius sp.). There is pyrite throughtout this piece, giving it a real luster (it's hard to see in the pictures).

Found in Ellis county Kansas. Saw a small section sticking out and when I started to wash it I saw there was quite a few packed into the rock. I was able to get most of the rock off (I’m thinking limestone maybe?). Are these all little pieces of petrified wood? They are grey in color, the largest piece being about half an inch across. The black rock is intriguing as well. There are small black specs all over and then the larger one, seen in the first picture. There are also also a few shells smashed into it, but they are pretty difficult to see. I have a few pictures showing the entire thing and some close ups.
