Hello everyone I found this stone in the middle of a sandy desert. 60cm long, 15cm wide, very heavy. When I cut it in half, I was very surprised at all these pretty colors. Which kind of stone is it? Any idea?

I had the opportunity to cruise around Wyoming, Colorado, and Utah on my own for 5 days The first day of my fossil hunting excursion was to be spent at the Petrified Blue Forest site in Western Wyoming. Having been there before, I knew fragments of wood abound, many carrying the blue agate on it. But I was determined to find a “large” log this trip. I had researched how to up my odds and stopped at a hardware store the night before and purchased a shovel as step one. So early that morning, I found myself looking out at the vastness of this “forest” thinking where to start. That is when this antelope startled me. After a short stare down both the antelope and I were on our merry way. Soon after stepping out of my vehicle to scout around, I began finding many small pieces of petrified wood with the characteristic blue agate that everyone is after. Here is a piece of wood next to a skull that I do not recognize. Any thoughts about what animal this was? After an hour, and not finding anything substantial, I jumped back into the car and followed an obscure path that led me to the top of a hill. From up here, one can appreciate the vastness of the region. Looking around told me that petrified wood existed even up here. So out came the shovel again. The ground is made up of a loosely broken sedimentary like rock that can be shoveled with some (much) difficulty. As I dug, my eyes were intently focused on the hole created looking for a hint of an algae fossil that has a very distinct look to it. Why look for algae???? Because within the algal mat is where the wood lies! Finally, after many digs, some significant algae appeared in my hole. Here is a picture of it as found and the debris surrounding it removed. A piece of the top layer of algae is removed, exposing the wood inside. Unfortunately, when I tried to wedge the log out of its hiding place it split in two, leaving this piece in tact and the other piece in a crumbled mess. Thank goodness I had purchased a small container of acetone at the store and I immediately added it to the Paraloid B 72 crystals I had brought with me from Minnesota. This stabilized the intact piece fairly well, though I could have used many more resin crystals than what I packed. The Blue Forest wood was deposited into a fresh water, algae filled, shallow lake that was full of silica. Soon after the fresh wood was deposited in the water, algae formed a thick crust around it. Here is a small branch showing the layering of algae. The wood with time shrunk, providing space for the silica rich water to do its thing!!!! In addition to the mineral deposits, this wood has exquisite preservation due to the algae blanket protecting it from the elements. Here is a piece that shows the boring holes by insects as fresh as if they were made today. Now some of my specimens brought home. Unfortunately, the specimens found on top of the Butte contained mostly yellow calcite crystals. Next time I will stay down below and hope for much bluer specimens. Here is a branch that was completely mineralized!!

Hello there! I was looking around the Fossil ID sections and saw a post about a piece of petrified wood which looks very close to this unidentified bit I found on a beach in Calvert Cliffs state park in Maryland. Does anyone have any information that can definitively classify this as petrified wood? Thanks in advance!

I found this amazing fossil and I've just been so interested in it! I think it might be an aquatic reptile of which I can't remember the name of but it was found in a watery rocky sewer area near where I reside. I noticed it looked like an animal and took it home. I've washed it and took these pictures and really would love it if someone could help me identify it. Thanks

Wondering if this is petrified wood and if so, what would cause the strange texture? Found in north central Nebraska where I have found many other pieces that actually look like wood. Thanks

Hi, I found this really old Moose Shed in clay and dark sand in 3 feet of water in Northern Minnesota. It is solid, really dense, looks like it's in the stage of petrifying. Any clue of his old it is, or how to tell?

Hi These are some stones I Found in Middle Georgia in Bibb County. I'm new at fossils and I feel like all of these stones where tools of some sort. So any opinions are very welcome amd appreciated. The one that resembles a snake head appears to me. That it may have been made from the Upper Jaw of A petrified Frilled Shark. I could be very wrong I'm not sure but the details on the side that wasn't smoothed looks to me just like one. Thank You for all your opinions. I look forward to reading them

Found this in South Dakota with other petrified wood. I’m just wondering if this piece is for sure petrified wood, or just a rock? Thank you!

Hello dear members, my 10 year old son found this little stone (1.5 inches long) in a backyard in Michigan (lower peninsula). We found petoskey stones (fossilized rugose coral, Hexagonaria percarinata.)there as well and hope to find someone who can tell us if this is a petrified animal or plant? Especially the little white part looks so interesting to us, perhaps someone knows more. We’re no experts and just started collecting:) Thank you very much!

hello, this object has passed through three generations in my family, and now it was passed on to me. They told me it's a petrified pear, but I have my doubts, what do you think? I took the photos next to a pear to comparision. in the last photo I joined several photos at different angles.

I am new to this forum so please forgive me if I don't do something right. I was rock hunting this weekend near a NW Missouri small river and came across this. It looks like a petrified animal LOL. I am just baffled! It is in pure rock form. It's about 1.5" tall and about a half inch wide.

I found this curious item in a wild space at the back of our house in London. Around 20cm long, initially thought it looked like a bone. But then picking it up was very heavy for its size, have weighed it as 1.75kg. Looks sort of like a bone from certain angles, but maybe more likely to be petrified wood? What do people think? Very curious to know what it looks like if sliced open. Would that be advised? How would one go about having that done?
