I found this lovely calcite ammonite at Saltwick Bay along the Yorkshire coast of the UK a while back. There was no shell remaining from what I can tell, leaving just the calcite formed inside. Not sure if this is common at all?

Can anyone tell me why the B-76 is not dissolving in acetone? Is it supposed to be like this pic below? Alex

A few months back, I spent three days along the Whitby coastline. It was a very good three days of collecting, but my last find of them days, is to this day my best find. I had decided to head to Runswick Bay. My legs and back were exhausted, so decided the short walk to to car park would be fairly light on the legs. Now, in my experience, Runswick hasn’t really produced much in the past for me, so I hadn’t gotten my hopes up too much. So you can imagine my shock, when I see a rather large nodule day there in Situ. I’ll let the pictures say the rest

It’s been a long time since I posted here. So here’s a thanks to everybody that’s helped me out in the past on here. It’s seriously appreciated. So. Here’s a lovely 6 inch Hildoceras I found recently at Kettleness, I’m the Yorkshire coast. She’s a beauty. A few of the outer whorl chambers are a little crush, but it just adds to the piece of think

I have recently heard on the internet that some people use dremel tools to prep fossils, particularly cleaning gunk off of echinoids and co. Is it a recommended for Echie prep, or should I use something else?

Quick 18 inch layer prep I just finished. Decided to do this one with a scalpel instead of scribes because some of the fish was pretty flaky and I was afraid that the air from the scribe would blow pieces off even if I was careful with the tip. Being an Amphiplaga I didn't want to risk that. Took about 30 minutes and was a relaxing project.

Here’s another torture prep. This is a little Diplomystus from the ultra hard bottom cap. This one is a bit harder to prep because there’s actually very little matrix on the fossil. So, it’s much easier to accidentally go through it with the scribe. I’m alternating between scribe and abrasive on this one.

@holdinghistory was the winner of the most recent prep auction that I held to support our great community here. He sent me a Diplomystus from the Green River Formation 18” layer. I finished up some other preps and got started on this today. Here’s how this started out:

I have been working on making my own air abrasive unit but the pen section I created it not precise enough being made of plumbing parts. I am curious if any of you have found a somewhat affordable pen. I have only seen tip replacements and pens with the abrasive feeder. Thanks

So this mesosaurus skeleton has been on the favorite auction site for ages. It looks pretty rough, but after reading all the informative fossil preparation posts on this forum I'm beginning to think this skeleton could look nice with some prep work. The only areas of concern are the big sections of matrix that look filled in (shown outlined in the picture). This was likely done to replace missing sections of matrix. I remember reading a post where someone showed a fossil that had its matrix dyed a brighter color to increase contrast. You can see here with this skeleton the bones are nearly the same color as the matrix making the mesosaurus hard to see. Maybe I could dye the matrix a lighter color to make the Mesosaurus contrast a bit more? Also, what other preparation techniques could I employ to make this fossil look the part? I'm really considering trying this project, so any input anyone can provide would be extremely helpful.

Hello, prep friends! Does anyone have exact specs on the stylus/pins for the CP and Paleotools units? I just purchased a knockoff and this diamond pin that it came with is totally useless. I want to replace it, but have no idea how compatible it will be with anything else.

Way back in December, I received a handful of fish from @RJB as a trade for some prep. I finally got the first one done! Here’s how it all began..

Can anyone tell me the exact way to set one of these up? I’m thought it was the compressor >airline > water trap >pen. but it doesnt seem to fit.

I wasn’t sure where to put this so our keepers may need to move thisnif it’s in the wrong spot. I have a Harbor Freight blast cabinet that I don’t need. It is less than a year old. I just needed something flat for my microscope. This works well with magnifying lamps and head worn magnifiers. It is worth $100 and I’d be interested in trading for a nice ammonite if anyone is interested. PM me if you want to discuss. I’m in Dallas, TX so local pick up is best but I can ship it if needed.

Went out and found some Ecphora! Now, time to prep! First one: Size:1.7 inches pre-prep prediction: Not great

Hello all, I think this question has been asked a lot here but It is still not 100% clear for me how to stabilise, glue and prep fossils. I've found some beautifel ammonites, a reptile tooth, trilobites... But every time I try to prep one it turns into a disaster after a couple of minutes. I have an air scribe and a lot of hand tools , but I am afraid of using them again since all of my tries turned out in the destruction of the fossil. Could someone give me hints on this? Greetings Thijs

Warning: Lot’s of photos Well hello everyone, Ever since the monster rains we had I’ve been hearing about some great finds at Matoaka possibly hailing from the new slides. @Shark Tooth Hunter Found an awesome meg, @FossilsAnonymous walked out with some nice teeth and a big ole bone, and @I_gotta_rock found Ecphora(e), a plethora of inverts, and another big bone. She also said some person walked out with a chunk of clay bearing a complete cetecean vert and ribs. How could I pass this up? Though visions of megs danced in my head, I went with lower expectations (Matoaka is not the place you go to hunt megs). However, I love a good Ecphora! I was confident I could find a good one or two. Before I got there, I stopped at Jim’s roadside fossil stand. Had a good conversation with him, got to see some epic finds, and learned some good tips. Also bought some bones, ones kinda funny (get it! It’s a complete cetecean humerus! Permission to roll eyes and stop reading granted), and the next is a cetecean skull element, I’m not sure exactly what you call it (not up to date on my cetecean cranial osteology) but it holds the ear bones in it. Also got an Ecphora as a failsafe.

Anyone here ever prep shark cartilage? It's beyond my equipment.
fossilized6s posted a topic in Questions & Answers
Been trying to prep what i believe is a Carboniferous shark skeleton and it is just......well.....hair pulling. My severe colorblindness really does not help and my tools are very limited. This is truly a prepping nightmare on such a rare piece. Thinking of just sending this to someone who knows what the heck they are doing. So, anyone deal with cartilage before?- 3 replies

I got my hand on a Crinoid calyx from somewhere in Texas (no location attached other than creek), and I’d like to know if this should be prepped any more, and if it is worth seeking professional help (I certainly can’t do it yet). It’s around four inches (I think, it’s not with me right now). Thanks for any advice!

Greetings! Before I mess this thing up, I wanted to ask what I should do with this piece from Calvert Cliffs, MD (Miocene). It is about 13 by 9 inches and is pretty thick, about 22 pounds so I have no idea how much bone is actualy in there. When I found it, it only had about 1/3rd of the bone showing. Once I started picking away with my dental picks, more and more bone started showing up (I didn't get to the end the bone in any particular direction) but unfortunately the material is getting tougher to pick away. So my questions are, does anyone know what it is right now, should I continue prepping and if so, would my dental picks and other small tools be okay to use? If we think it will end up being unidentifiable material, I may end up keeping it in the matrix - I actually think it looks pretty cool with the shells and ray tooth. Thanks!

I’ve been putting it off to long; I need to get prepping! And as practice I’ve started with what looks like the easiest piece, a whale jaw bit in a concretion I found. I need to dig it out and reattach it to the rest which was found already dislodged from it. I’ve been using a manual scribe and dang this stuff is hard! Most of the cliff sediment is loose but this concretion stuff is not easy to scratch up! Soaked it in vinegar over night, and it is slightly easier. I’ve put in a little less than two hours I think, and it’s progressing but not at a pace I like, so I used a gift card I forgot I had and bought myself a electric scribe, hoping it will help Once I got that finished, I am gonna try a larger whale bone in a huge (for me) concretion, which is gonna require consolidation. that’s gonna be a tough. I got a long list of other things I need to prep out and consolidate, crash course time! Here’s my progress thus far

I have been reading through the threads about dolomite powder as a blasting medium for cleaning trilobites. Am I correct in my understanding that to get the range consistenty around 40 microns you need to run the powder through a 325 mesh sieve? I am assuming the dolomite powder available from places like the pottery supply house is not consistently in range of 40 microns, and will need to be sifted. Is there a place to buy 40 micron dolomite than anyone can recommend. (Someplace along the London to Toronto corridor would be ideal) Thanks in advance!

Just curious what the trick is to removing that white residue that happens with super glue sometimes when it seeps out of the cracks when two pieces are glued and pressed together. I have a couple of hadrosaur processes that have been previously glued that I would like to clean up. I’ve seen people use acetone, but I’m not just going to guess that is okay to do. There’s no coloring or filler done on the specimens. So that’s not a concern. Any help would be much appreciated. Sincerely, J
