Crossword puzzle just for Fossil Forum members
Roanoker posted a topic in Members' News & Diversions
I discovered how much I liked doing crossword puzzles recently. Then I thought, why not make one myself? There should be a theme. How about The Fossil Forum? My son, who is a respected Fossil Forum member, was very helpful in selecting appropriate words and correcting mistakes. There were many. I hope there are none left. Perhaps you will let me know. The first image is the entire crossword puzzle with the clues following. It is probably too big to print, unless you have access to a printing press. The next two images are of just the numbered squares and the clues respectively. You should be able to print those. It took a very long time to put this together. I assume it will take you a long time to come up with the answers. Please let me know what you think and how you did. I learned a lot just by putting it together. I hope you have fun with it.- 11 replies

I've been looking for hesperornis fossils for a while, and recently, an acquaintance presented me with a challenge: He would send me a bag of broken up hesperornis verts for me to assemble. In return, I had to send him the biggest and best vert back. He also warned me it could be a real headache. I took the challenge. Lo and behold! I was presented with over 60 broken pieces, some of which were tiny and terribly fragmented (not shown in picture) Nonetheless, I googled for pictures of hesperornis verts and put what limited knowledge I had on fossil assembly into this task. After 18 hours, this is what I got: All in all, it was a tiring but satisfying job and now I can happily say I am the proud owner of a chain of associated hesperornis verts

The tag on the box that I picked this out of (silver pick) identified it as, you guessed it, petrified monkeypuzzle wood with shipworm borings. The ID seems right but it's such a beautiful piece I wondered if anyone has any further thoughts.

Last night I took delivery of a phytosaur skull to prep. I think it might have been collected with a sledgehammer and a blender! There appears to be a very good portion of the skull and upper jaw preserved but many pieces are VERY small. This is a perfect prep for the dark hours of winter. The 4 sandwich baggies are the part that is going to hurt.
