Hey fossil folks, I’ve been very busy lately moving into my new house and planning my wedding (8/9/19 is the big day) so I haven’t had a chance to report on a few recent trips. In the beginning of July I got some nice fossil hunting in...I went to Cole Hill Rd, DSR and Briggs rd but I’ll post the latter at another time if I get the chance. This is just a short and sweet trip report for Cole Hill Rd from Friday July 5th. I got out of work slightly early and made the quick 40 minute drive to the site. I hunted from about 545-8pm. I decided I would try to move some overburden and see if the rock was weathered below....I did a lot of work only to struggle moving the rock. Maybe the winter will loosen it up. I did end up finding a little spot with rock that was more “movable” and I had a little hot streak of parts and pieces. Nothing articulated but some nice cephalons and pygidiums. Heres some of the better Cephalons (sorry I missed the scale bar!!) plus a few body segments I found. The one at the bottom right is probably the best one but is covered by a brach. It looks like I could smack it with a hammer and pop it off but I’m going to wait for better equipment. I like the detail on this partial cephalon. Heres a line up of the better pygidiums I found. I really like the dipleura pygidiums because you can usually see faint evidence where the pygidium used to be more segmented as a juvenile. Kinda neat. Can’t ignore the associated fauna....some nice bivalves, a Gastropoda and a small cephalopod. That’s it for this trip. I still really want to find that “wow” specimen but I’ll have to pay my dues. It’s a very difficult outcrop to work, at least for me. Glad I found some nice partials, my last trip wasn’t as successful. I ended up going to DSR and Briggs rd the next day on July 6th and did decent. I had a really excellent find at Briggs rd I want to share so as I get the time I’ll try to post my fossil hunt from July 6th. Thanks for reading Al

I found this pygidium the other day in the Silurian Racine formation near Chicago, wondering if any trilobite specialists can help with species ID? I'm thinking Illaenus ioxus (is that current nomenclature?)but not sure. Thanks for any help.

I just went through my bag of trilobits from this summer. Most are identified. I am getting better with time!! Here are a few Small pygidiums, all between 1 and 2 cm. These small non descript tails are hard for me to identify. If there are ones that stand out, let me know, and why you think so! That way I will know for next summer's specimens. They are numbered. Thanks, Mike

This morning I was going through a bucket if Black Cat Mountain matrix a friend gave to me. I found this nice negative of a large trilobite Pygidium. I wonder if some one might know the species. Thank you

Found in Arkona, Ontario Age: Devonian Size: about 18 mm/0.75 inches Any ideas?

I am finally getting most of my trilobite parts identified but still need some schooling on this pygidium: It was found in the Platteville/ Ordovician in SW Wisconsin. It is 4cm by 4.5 cm In addition, these two plates contain what I thought were just pieces of Isotelus, but the more I looked, the more I questioned my thoughts. Agree or change the ID? These plates are 12 inches by 6 inches. The asterisk's mark where the specimens are.

I was going through some containers from a few years back when I returned to collecting, and it had a bunch of pieces I had collected from my mixed fill location (lower to mid Devonian). I came across this little pygidium. The squares are 5 mm x 5 mm. Going through some of the literature to compare photo plates from Ludvigsen and Lesperance, as well as scanning the Proetids in Levi-Setti and Whittington, there just didn't seem to be a perfect match. The axis sits fairly high on this one, a little like Mannopyge halli, but unlike the M. halli does not have the terminal nodes. The axis "points" downward rather dramatically, and has some apparent incisions. There is a small but distinct margin on the pygidium that made me think one of the Dechenella types. I've tentatively labeled it Pseudodechenella although I am not comfortable with that identification for this one. The Pseudodechenella I usually find don't have this very pronounced axial feature, and usually have a kind of smoother shell on the pygidium. I may be overthinking this, but I put this one out there for our Devo bug experts. Much appreciated for any help on this one.

Hi folks. At first glance, I labeled this cephalon an Eldredgeops but it doesn't compare well with other examples in the area behind the eye where the "dimples" are. There is also a sort of "horn" projecting from the upper rear portion of the eye. Just not certain about this one. Could just be deformation ? Then the nice size greenops pygidium. Wow, I'd love to find a complete one this size ! Thanks, Regards.

This is #8 and #9. Both were in the same split of shale. The larger one was barely visible, just 1/2 of the fwd center ridge. Took quite a bit of digging to expose it. I was pretty sure what it was, getting used to the little clues. Thanks again !

Found #6 last night. Only a small portion was exposed, I scratched the matrix away to expose the rest. I wish I had learned earlier what to look for more specifically. I am certain that I have overlooked more of what I am looking for than what I have found. Thanks again to all for you guidance, experience and willingness to contribute. Kindest regards.
