  1. Hello everyone, I'm a novice considering an online purchase. In my corner of the world even poor quality fossils are few and far between both online and and in shops, so I haven't had much oppotunity to get a feel for what's genuine or decent quality and could use some advice. The tooth is listed as a Dromaeosaurus from the not very specific location of North africa. I'd of course prefer if the location was properly specified, but because I rarely see anything worth purchasing, I've ended up considering this tooth in spite of that. I'm wondering whether the tooth has been restored (the tip perhaps? The distal serrations?), it also seems quite shiny but that might just be the lighting. Whether the ID is correct, I know teeth from this area are generally poorly described. The tooth is 16mm long and to me the mesial serrations look smaller than the distal ones and the tooth seems to have slight ridges(?) The photos have been provided by the seller, so I apologize if the image quality is too poor to conclude anything. Thank you for reading my post
  2. Hello, I recently bought this tooth that is said to be from a spinosaurus. Is it real? It was found in morocco... Thank you in advance!
  3. Hi I came across this Keichousaurus fossil online and was wondering if it is real or as major restorations of painted parts. Thanks!
  4. I was doing some investigating into different types of Trilobite fossils and I came across these images. I didn't know a Koneprusia, or any Trilobite fossil, could be this pristine (or that if fake that it could be so detailed a fake). It doesn't look like what I thought because the spines seem bendy here and I thought they would be rigid from seeing other (way less detailed) specimens. I also am not sure preparation could produce this level of clean detail on the "spikes" (?) show on all the spines. Could this be a real fossil, or could someone have created this level of fakery? I kept thinking I had found the spikiest Koneprusia Trilobite out there until then suddenly I saw these photos. Now I'm not sure what to make of them.
  5. Hey, I have a question... what do you think of the fossil i found at a store? Is it real? It's from ca. 80 Million years from marokko.
  6. Hello everybody! Someone offered me a Scabrella to buy... As it is a rare trilobite I have doubts about its authenticity. Can you help me? Please!
  7. HI everybody, so i´m quite new in the fossil collecting business and started watching some auctions on an auction site, recently. My one and only fossil finding event was some years ago in the south of morocco with my wife in a jeep, where we could find trilobites easy on the side of the desert tracks. one of the locals also showed us the "production" of the 100´s of trilobites they sold as souvenirs, mostly made by casts... Well, what i´m looking for now is a selection of maybe a (or 2) handful nice objects of good size and quality, and one of this pieces should be a mosasaur skull or jaw. There are a lot offered these days at the mentioned auction site, but i´m really afraid that some of them are fake. so my question to you experts is - how can i distinguish between a real mosa and a pile of resin? and is the expert-estimation on cata something you can trust - at least that´s it a real dino and no fake one? i did a little research on this topic and will post 3 pics of proven real mosa skull/lower jaws from past auctions (the 3 with the blue background) at another site and after that 4 pics of 2 mosasaurs that are on the auction this week and, well, could be interesting for us if they are no fakes. thank you so far for your feedback and best regards, ray Auctions: # 1 # 2 REAL MOSASAUR JAWS
  8. I'm thinking this is a fake but would appreciate some opinions.
  9. Attached are a few pictures of woolly mammoth teeth. Some of the pictures are real (per the seller) and some are replicas. My question is without additional information (which I think a seller could fabricate) how can you tell the real from the replica?! Thank you!
  10. Hello Could someone please give their opinion regarding if this an authentic Ceratopsian bone? Per the seller it’s from Wyoming. Thank you!
  11. Please some expert to answer me , I dont have any knowledge, please answer fast TY ! , Please as many honest answers as you can <3 I bought this , but before i pay can someone answer me is it genuine ? real mammoth tooth ?
  12. when i clicked it with real jade there was a high pitched ringing sound i believe that is an indication of real jade
  13. Hello TFF, Former lurker here, now fresh newbie. I've stumbled across a Psittacosaurus skeleton that seems too good to be true and I'd like to ask for your opinion(s). It looks real to me. No clear origin, sold from Taiwan, length 1.2 meters, weight 3.5kg (mistake, red flag or nothing?). I've asked for additional details (that I will or won't get), but meanwhile I can't decide if it's real and I'm paranoid or ... not So, what do you make of this specimen? Anything suspicious or noteworthy about it? Any input would help, thank you!
  14. Hi there everyone! I’ve been wanting to expand my amber specimen collection for quite some time now and I recently came across a seller (which will remain unnamed per the forum rules) with some very interesting and unique listings posted on their page. I’ve included images of the specimens below; I was really hoping that y’all could give them a look and let me know what y’all think. The first specimen looks to have a lizard/snake skin inclusion. The second specimen contains small feather inclusions along with some even smaller organic matter. Both of these specimens are said to be Burmese amber (dated around 99 million years) mined in both Hkamti, Sagaing Division and Tanai, Kachin State, Myanmar. I’d love to hear your thoughts on whether these seem legit or not. And incase I do decide to acquire them, I’d greatly appreciate any tips on how to test them in person. Thank you all!
  15. Hi, I found this fossil sold online, what are your opinions about it? In general, are auction sites good websites to buy fossils or have you a website to suggest where I can buy fossils original? Thank you for your help!!
  16. A friend of mine gave this to me recently and I was wondering if it was legitimate or not, because neither of us could easily tell.
  17. Just wondering if you see anything fishy about this small but pretty megalodon tooth. Thanks!
  18. I'm looking at purchasing this little fellow and I basically wanted some third party views on the legitimacy of the fossil. Here's my thoughts. The layout of the fossil looks different to fakes that I've seen as it is hunched over on itself in quite a natural death pose meaning the fossilised bone is stacked a little on parts. I believe this would be difficult to fake and also what's the point making your work harder when producing fakes. Also the small size and amount of detail included makes me think its real. The other detail that makes me belive it could be authentic is that the tiny tail vertebrae have separated apart towards the tip of the tail like what would occur naturally. Any shared knowledge on this subject would be greatly appreciated and also other people's views! Thank you for your time!
  19. This is a much more recent acquisition that I picked up at an estate auction of a fossil collector that was identified as a Stegosaurus back plate. My own research has led me to conclude by the shape that if it is a Stegosaurus plate, it is back tail plate that would have been near the spikes. I have no concerns that the other fossils I picked up at the auction are genuine and were correctly identified. However given just the rarity of stegosaurus fossils, I think it’s probably not one and it was wishful thinking on the original collectors part. What do you think? For all I know it’s just a flat rock. I don’t claim to have any real expertise.
  20. I brought this Keichosaur around 2006 at a fossil and mineral show. I also just found this website this week. I never had any reason to think it was fake but since I have found this website, thought I should get some opinions. It’s a small example at only 3 4/5” x 3 1/5”. Appreciate the help.
  21. This is listed on one of our favorite auction sites. I am no expert on these the seller lists it as a Nothosauria however they also list it as Jurassic and my understanding is this species would be Triassic. Additionally they list it as an amphibian but this would be a reptile so again a lot of red flags, No location is listed so I have inquired and am awaiting a response. What are y'all thoughts on this? Its actually listed as Sinohydrosaurus and was obtained from a local auction so no provenance.
  22. Hi there everyone! I came across a listing for a “dimetrodon claw” and would really appreciate it if y’all could give it a look and tell me what y’all think. The majority of my knowledge and collection mostly consists of specimens from the Hell Creek formation so I’m not too knowledgeable when it comes to permian age fossils, though I’d love to expand my horizons and learn about everything I can. The specimen is said to be a dimetrodon claw from the Ryan Formation, Waurika Oklahoma. I’ve gone ahead and contacted the seller for any more information about the specimen so I’ll keep y’all updated. Thank you all so much!
  23. Hello , any red flag on this megalodon tooth ? Info : from indonesia , seller claim to have only one repair in the right side of the root . ( highlighted in Red) Note : black mark to hide seller name Thanks in advance
  24. I am a total noob, this is my first fossil. Bought it just yesterday. I fell in love with Spinos long ago and when I realized I could actually purchase a tooth, I was on it. I got it at a pretty reputable store here in Tokyo that works adjecent to a science organization, so I felt quite confident buying it despite not knowing a single thing about what to look out for in terms of quality. The label says it's from Taouz, Morocco. It's 8.5cm / 3.3 inches long. I would love some feedback on whether this tooth looks restored or repaired in any way, or any overall comments on its quality. Note: the colors of the photos may be slightly oversaturated because my phone camera loves to act fancy. I tried my best!
