Any funny business on this spino claw?
jikohr posted a topic in Is It Real? How to Recognize Fossil Fabrications
Hi everyone! I have my eye on a Kem Kem spino claw and was hoping for a second opinion on the potential presence of shenanigans. The top looks great, but the bottom has a pretty clear difference in coloration between the tip area and the back. Although that doesn't seem to go beyond the bottom so it might just be a fluke in the mineralization or just differing levels of exposure. So what do you all think? Any insight is appreciated as always!- 1 reply

Spinosaurid claw looks odd to me; maybe I'm seeing things?
casadelshawn posted a topic in Is It Real? How to Recognize Fossil Fabrications
A friend sent me these pics of a claw that interests him. These are all the pics we have for now, and it's only identified as "Spinosaurid, Niger". The source says that the area in green is restored with carved bone, but it looks all carved to me. What think the group? Thanks! -
Hi everyone! One of the goals for my collection is to eventually own a keichousaurus fossil as they’ve come to really fascinate and captivate me. I’ve done some research externally and on the forum about how to identify real or fake or restored keich fossils and I wanted your guys’ input on this specimen I’ve recently come across. Admittedly, the prep work on this keich fossil, if real, is pretty bad and is definitely not something I’d go after, but I wanted to see if my bit of research has payed off. My guess is that the specimen is real, however, it seems to me like it’s had a very unpleasant acid prep done to it with some sort of restoration in the distal bones, possible in the tail too. What do you think? I’d love to hear your guy’s thoughts.

Hello everyone, I'm a novice considering an online purchase. In my corner of the world even poor quality fossils are few and far between both online and and in shops, so I haven't had much oppotunity to get a feel for what's genuine or decent quality and could use some advice. The tooth is listed as a Dromaeosaurus from the not very specific location of North africa. I'd of course prefer if the location was properly specified, but because I rarely see anything worth purchasing, I've ended up considering this tooth in spite of that. I'm wondering whether the tooth has been restored (the tip perhaps? The distal serrations?), it also seems quite shiny but that might just be the lighting. Whether the ID is correct, I know teeth from this area are generally poorly described. The tooth is 16mm long and to me the mesial serrations look smaller than the distal ones and the tooth seems to have slight ridges(?) The photos have been provided by the seller, so I apologize if the image quality is too poor to conclude anything. Thank you for reading my post

Hi everyone! I have my eye on a really nice Megalodon. The problem is the seller, who by his own admission is pretty inexperienced with fossils, has no idea if it has any restoration. Now, I could figure it out myself with my UV and some acetone, but the seller doesn't offer returns so I'm conflicted (normally I'd move on but I have a feeling about this one). Figured I'd see if anyone here could spot any funny business. My main concern is a slightly darker area in the upper left root lobe on the lingual side and center of the root on the labial side. Though if it is restored I find it strange that that small but conspicuous enamel peel on the lingual side and enamel chip on the labial side was left untouched. If it can't be said from photos then it can't be said from photos, I'm prepared for that, I just thought I'd try. Any insight is greatly appreciated as always!

Hi everyone! I recently acquired a very large (3.5+ inches) digested Rex from McCone County, Montana. The seller said no repair or restoration and I just wanted to make sure. I shined a UV light on it and there is one area that I'm interested in. Along the mesial Carinae is a very dull green under the UV. I tried to capture it with my phone but all I got was blue light since my Camera isn't equipped for that. Typically when I see restoration it's a very bright and vibrant green under UV so I'm not sure if this dull green area is restoration, if it's just an area that was stabilized, or if that's just there sometimes. Here are the pics I took, although my question is primarily "what does very dull green under UV light mean?" Any insight is appreciated!

Quality of this Spinosaurus tooth?
lovanah posted a topic in Is It Real? How to Recognize Fossil Fabrications
I am a total noob, this is my first fossil. Bought it just yesterday. I fell in love with Spinos long ago and when I realized I could actually purchase a tooth, I was on it. I got it at a pretty reputable store here in Tokyo that works adjecent to a science organization, so I felt quite confident buying it despite not knowing a single thing about what to look out for in terms of quality. The label says it's from Taouz, Morocco. It's 8.5cm / 3.3 inches long. I would love some feedback on whether this tooth looks restored or repaired in any way, or any overall comments on its quality. Note: the colors of the photos may be slightly oversaturated because my phone camera loves to act fancy. I tried my best! -
Real Carcharodontosaurus tooth ?
Sergiorex posted a topic in Is It Real? How to Recognize Fossil Fabrications
Hello I saw this decent sized tooth and wanted to buy it, however I wanted to know if it’s real first and if there are any restorations, repairs, or if this tooth is a composition before I buy it. I don’t think it is fake, has restoration or is a composition. However I’m not sure if it has repairs. Thanks in advance. -
Hi everyone, I acquired this fish about a year ago and was told there was no repair/restoration/funny business. Showed to a friend who agreed. Recently showed it to another friend who said it looked funny. Now after taking a closer look I'm having doubts especially with the teeth which look painted. Showed it to a third friend who said the teeth sometimes look like that. It's a big fish, about 13 inches that I IDed as Phareodus encaustus. What do you all think?
