Hi Guys! I finally cleaned up the last batch of rocks from my papa and grandma‘s estate. I know from my last post that I’m not supposed to get some of them wet but they were filthy so I had to clean them before bringing them into the house. Any feedback you have is appreciated. if you saw one of my previous posts, you’ll know that my grandparents collected rocks in Arizona, Wisconsin and Illinois. Most of these are probably from Arizona. I think the one piece of orangish petrified wood #3 is very cool. I would love to know if any of the other ones are petrified wood. To me it’s sort of looked like a pork tenderloin when I was cleaning it today! Maybe that’s just because I didn’t stop for lunch. Ha ha. It was so fun to spend time looking at each and every one. I have a critter living in one of them. Some sort of insect. I did my best trying to encourage him to get the heck out today using water and air but I might have to pull out the tweezers tomorrow! Thanks for looking and have a great week…

I was walking around the other day and found some rock that resembled slate but was full of some black specks. Can someone tell me if the specks were originally mineral deposits or perhaps more organic in origin? There is quite a lot of this rock in the valley I was in.

I found this one of my first trips out to Calvert Cliffs. It doesn’t have any of the characteristics of the other bones that I’ve found, but it’s shape and chipped enamel like appearance has had me questioning it for a good bit now. I feel like it’s a rock that wants to be a fossil and if anyone can give me some closure to this it’s be great.

This is my first post in this section. I found this while fossil hunting on the Brazos River in SE Texas. There is a lot of petrified wood, chert, chalcedony where I am. I’ve seen some interesting patterns on banded chert but nothing like this. Anyone have an idea?

Possible Eggs from Hunan Province
JJ Lavoie posted a topic in Is It Real? How to Recognize Fossil Fabrications
So these possible eggs (rocks) were acquired from a chinese dealer back in the 70's and somehow came to a local shop to me where they knew nothing about authenticating them. The information I was told is they are from the Hunan Province in China. They were told to have been placed in the matrix base. Measurements: Egg 1- 4"x4" Egg 2- 4"x4" Egg 3- 4.5"x4.5" I even got them CT scanned which you can see the kinda blurry results but i'm curious... Are they real?... If so what kind?- 23 replies

I found this on the bottom of the river in southeast Missouri. I've never seen anything like it. Any ideas?

Just what the heck is this? At first I thought it was metal and maybe a cannonball or something but I’m no so sure. It’s about 3” diameter and is only slightly magnetic, a strong magnet will attract it if close. Scratching it doesn’t appear to reveal any shiny metal. It really looks like a tomato turned to stone or something. There are tons of very old Indian ruins all around my land, mostly the Zuni and Anasazi. I actually found this just outside of a cliff dwelling half buried in the dirt. My first thought was cannonball since the conquistadors did terrorize the Zuni Indians with heavy artillery around the year 1500. But it dosn’t look like any pictures of cannonballs I’ve seen. this was also a major volcanic region of New Mexico with the last eruptions occurring around 10,000 years ago. Not sure if it’s volcanic in nature.

Hello! My Papa gifted me more rocks from the collection he and my Gramma gathered over the years. Just thought I would share them with my buddies on the fossil forum. As you may (or may not) have seen in my post “Beautiful Mixed Rock/Geode,” he already gave me a magnificent piece earlier this summer. I just washed these new ones up so they are wet in some of the photos. I always thought rocks looked their prettiest that way and it allows you to see more detail but let me know if you do not agree. My grandparents lived in Illinois, Wisconsin, Arizona and Florida. In case that gives context. The things that I am most curious about are -The white piece on top of the rusty colored geode. I broke some of it off thinking it was a spider sack. I had to clean some off those off a couple rocks. -The silver fleck in the oval bumpy rock (mica?). It is hard to get a good picture. -The blue, green and bronze/gold in the one rock But, any info that you would like to share is great! I am a beginner and love help with identifying things. Hope you like the pics! It is a beautiful day in boring Illinois but rocks make it more fun. Hoping it is as beautiful where you are today.

My Papa just gifted me this rock that was at my Great Grandma’s house and then was given to my Gramma who carried with her as they moved around the county. I’ve always loved it! It is about 11” H by 12” W. To me, it looks like a geode that someone chipped apart at some point to pull pieces off. I’ve never really seen anything like it. My family always called it a lava rock but obviously that’s not what it is! Just wondering if anyone had any comments. It seems like it has other rocks/minerals mixed in. I admire and collect rocks, but do not have a lot of knowledge. (Besides my best-in-state award in the Science Olympiad as a kid! Must not have been many of us into rocks for me to win!! Haha)

Hello Members, Greg from Western Washington. I am new to The Fossil Forum. Started collecting rocks a couple of years ago when I was beach combing looking for colorful rocks to tumble and display. My interests became focused when I continued to come across examples of bones and coprolite creating the urge to pursue the next best fossil find. Many questions linger for an inexperienced amateur. 1 - Why has only one Dino from the Jurassic Period been found in Washington State ? 2 - Are fossils found with all their original pigmentation intact ? 3 - Does meat fossilize ? Does Succulents plants fossilize? 4 - Washington law states that any Vertebrate fossils found belongs to the state and is unlawful to keep? Maybe I read or interpreted this wrong. Makes you not want to post photos of any finds. In two years, I have found examples of all which I have questioned. I believe Dinos did exist in Western WA as I have found fossil both pre and post Jurassic.

I found this when I was a kid about 30 years ago. I dug it up in my back yard and I thought it looked really cool and I've always held on to it. Anyone know what it could be? Your help will be much appreciated.

Hello!! Any insight on this would be appreciated! My daughter found it today diving in the ocean. We are in south Florida. It’s roughly 4inchesx3inches and 303g (0.668lbs) thanks!

Hi all, This rock comes from the Lance formation in Weston county, Montana. It's fossil-caliber solid feeling (as opposed to clay-like matrix in this area), but it's obviously not a solid fossil (unless it's a coprolite of mashed up stuff). There seem to be many fossils in it. The only thing recognizable to me is a couple of ceratopsian teeth. I just wanted to make sure it wasn't something I should leave intact (such as a coprolite) before I try to dismantle it...lol It's wet in these pics.
