Wonderful trip to the South Ram River in between camping and kayaking. While the rest of the group went to see Ram River Falls I elected to check my favourite spot for any scaphites that may have popped up since my last visit a couple years ago. Lucky day.

Looking to have growths id present on late cretaceous wood. The growths are the scales present on the wood. They appear to have been growing between wood layers. Wood is partly carbonized and not fully mineralized. Wood was drift wood mixed in with baculites and scaphites. Fossil taken in situ from upper part of Kevin mb of Marias Fm in Montana.

A guy I bumped into several years ago came by my house about 3 months ago and dropped off a box for me. He knew I was into fossils and he said he was cleaning up his rock shop. i finally went through that box. Wow!!! Everything in the box was just pieces but at the very bottom and in one of the corners was this fantastic specimen!!! My ammo buddy told me its most likely Scaphites borealis and this is the macroconch of the species. This is quite rare! Im gunna hafta try and find out where this guy got these from. My guess is Montana, South Dakota or Wyoming? RB

I was playing around in the garage tonight and thought to clean up a piece of scaphites that I'd picked up last fall in a ravine leading to the Smoky River in Northern Alberta. Three of us had worked our way down some pretty rough bush and eventually made our way into a mucky draw. The slope above continues to slump and it's not an easy time finding a place to pick around. One of the lumps I found was a crushed piece of shale 'glued' together by calcite crystals and holding a broken piece of scaphites. It's a fragile piece and it wouldn't take much to break it all apart but I carefully exposed

Originally the specimen was collected as a concretion from upper Pierre Shale Formation near the lowest level of the Fox Hills Formation. The collection location is Cedar Creek about seven miles south of Glendive, Montana. The Date collected was Oct. 12, 2018. Later, I removed most of the concretion/matrix with diamond blade and bits. Two of the hoploscaphites spedeni were badly crushed and fractured during fossilization and are missing half of shells. During prep, I miscalculated the depth of cutting blade, slightly damaging the middle scaphites.

I was seven miles south of Glendive; Montana on October 12, 2018; time 1400; exploring a drainage cut into the Pierre Shale Formation while looking for concretions. This scaphites was partly exposed on the surface of a concretion. Later, I removed most of the surrounding matrix.

Hello All, Recently, I've acquired a sliced half of the Cretaceous heteromorph ammonite Scaphites. While rarely sliced, I managed to find one buried in a pile of similarly sliced Madagascar ammonites, and purchased it. Here are the photos: 1. A view of the whole ammonite. Here, we can see the phragmocone as well as the sediment-filled living chamber. 2. A closeup of the phragmocone, showing the beautiful septa. Cant remember when I found this little beauty, but very little prep on this one. Im not sure but I think its a male Scaphites crassus? i left it in the rock, I like em that way. Nice and complete. RB

I have been researching the Scaphites and yet to find a suitable site that has much to say of the Eagleford species. I do have some information on the Trachy and the Hoplo. Neither of which is found in the Eagleford. Now the hoplo may have a sub-species in the Dallas area, most notably in the Arcadia Park stuff, but I can not get any reliable information on any of mine. Any suggestions? Note: Most of the specimens would measure ~.75 " or less. Thanks for any input and any source info would be gratifying. Jess B.
