    More unknown Devonian/WNY fossils

    Hello again, I have some more photographs of fossil specimens that I am unsure about or looking to confirm. Appreciate the help. 1. Devonian, Genesee Formation from around Dansville, NY. Agonatite? Gastropod? 2. Also Devonian, Onondaga Formation I believe, Erie Co.. I am not great at trace classification ID beyond that it looks to be a trace burrow 3. Devonian Moscow Fm., Erie Co. The little fossils on the left side of image? Can't find any sources on these. Neat trilobite eye in the rock. 4. Rugose Coral, Devonian Livingston Co. What is the fossil attached to the coral body? 5. Irondequoit Formation I believe. Definitely from Lockport, NY. These Bryozoa or some type of coral?

    Silurian Trilobites

    Hi, I have recently visited Wren's Nest, Dudley and I spotted this trilobite just as I was leaving. Could it be the trilobite Dalmanites? Another common trilobite from the area is Calymene blumenbachii, although it has a small spine, so I don't think it could be that. There's a few brachiopods surrounding it, I believe one is Leptaena? There's also this smaller one in the middle of this photo, is it a trilobite? It's 5mm across. All are from the Silurian. Thank you

    Leighton Formation Conodont?

    So, I have just found this highly-suspect fossil - my guess is a conodont. I saw it as I was examining pieces of shale, and thought it was worth looking at under the microscope. It seems to have the diagnostic features, even the transition of colors between the blue base and white tips. I was hoping for some of your options on it. If this is a conodont, it would be the first from this formation. My guess would be a Ozarkadina sp - it is a very common Silurian conodont here, and some of the elements look remarkably similar to my specimen. This specimen came from the very fossiliferous layers of this formation, and was found in association with multiple ostracod species (Kloedinia, Londinia, Hemsiella, etc.), T. elongatus tentaculites, and Nuculites corrugatus. This formation is Pridoli, Silurian. Thanks in advance for your help!

    Coprolite?

    I have just found this little coprolite? yesterday. This is the second time a coprolite-like fossil has turned up in the shale from the Leighton Fm. I am not really sure on this one, though, due to the presence of crinoid stems. The fossil(s) are from the Leighton Formation, Maine; which is Pridoli, Silurian. The main reason I think it is a coprolite is because of its situation in the shale. The rest of the shale around it is relatively uniform, with no fossils whatsoever. The fossils present in it are one crinoid stem, quite a few ostracods, a very small Orbiculoidea brachiopod, and an unidentified piece of rather bluish-black material in the center, possibly some sort of shell. My main concern for its identification as a coprolite is the wide range of rather large fossils in it. I don't know what animal would have had such a diet, except possibly a very large detritivore - but I don't know of any super large ones here. The only animals that I can think of producing coprolites in this formation would be eurypterids, phyllocarids, agnathan fish, and possibly trilobites. A coprolite of this size I would identify as an agnathan fish, but I would defer to some of our fish and coprolite experts for this. @jdp @GeschWhat Below are two photos of the two different sides of the coprolite.     Phyllocarid valve?

    This morning I split this shale (technically it fell apart on me), and found this interesting little fossil. I was thinking that there was a possibility of it being a phyllocarid valve, but I have never seen one. This also raises a question that I have been wondering - how do you differentiate between a phyllocarid and a bivalve valve when the tail is absent? What raised my suspicions on this specimen are the raised bumps on the external mold and the depressions on the cast. The pictures below are of the specimen. The first shows the cast/internal mold, and the second the external mold. It is from the Leighton Formation, Maine; which is Pridoli, Silurian.   7. Again, here is another invertebrate I have not been able to identify. Either way, my original guess was a trilobite pygidium, until I reviewed the fossil under different lighting, and then saw that it matched no known trilobites from this formation. So I am at a loss here. It is Pridoli, Silurian. For anyone who is interested, this came from a recent excursion to the Leighton Formation. It was found in a layer that contained only Chonetes bastini brachiopods and a few ostracods - with some possible fish bits. In the pictures below, the fossil is shown under a combination of different lightings, to show the surface texture of the specimen. The first three pictures show the cast/original of the specimen, the last two show the external mold of it. The first picture is to show what the entire thing looks like. I am pretty certain that the round piece at the top right of the picture is part of the same specimen, but I cannot be sure. Thanks in advance for your help everyone!

    Rhynchotrema sp?

    I am unsure on the identification of this brachiopod. It is from the Leighton Formation, Maine; which is Silurian, Pridoli. According to Maine's Paleozoic Record (an excellent book that lists all the fauna and flora found in formations across Maine), there are only two Rhynchonellid genera in this formation, Camarotoechia and Rhynchotrema. It does not look like a Camarotoechia, but I cannot find many references for the internal mold of Rhynchotrema brachiopods. I would appreciate any references you have on this genus, as well as any advice on the identification of it (@Tidgy's Dad?).Thanks in advance for your help! Regards, Asher

    Camarotoechia brachiopod

    I finished prepping this specimen recently, an unidentified Camarotoechia brachiopod. It exhibits an uncommon/rare orange coloration; only about 1/100 of Camarotoechia brachiopods show it. This one, though, unfortunately has some compression damage on the right side, and some of the ridges have pieces missing. The pictures below first show the pre-prep photo (which I finally remembered to take), and the post-prep. Thanks everyone for reading!

    Platyceras sp.

    I have a nice little gastropod in my collection, from my most recent trip to the Leighton formation. I am pretty certain that this is a Platyceras sp, such as the one shown in the plate below, figures 23 - 24. Boucot, A. J., Yochelson, E. L. (1966) Paleozoic Gastropoda from the Moose River Synclinorium, Northern Maine. Geological Survey Professional Paper, 503(A). https://pubs.usgs.gov/pp/0503a/report.pdf I do not believe that specimens such as these have been assigned to species as of yet, and would greatly appreciate to hear any insight on their taxonomy. The lifestyle of these gastropods is pretty interesting. It is thought that they attached themselves to the anal plates of crinoids, to feed on their excrement. There is some debate, though, that instead this species was a suspension feeder, or was parasitic, boring holes in through the crinoid's shell. The picture below is of my specimen. The tip, unfortunately, broke off, but the rest of the specimen is intact, though it is laterally compressed. It is from the Leighton Formation, which is Pridoli, Silurian. Thanks for reading!
  12. I had the opportunity to visit another Silurian site in the northern Georgia/southern Tennessee area. This is now the third such site I've visited, but the first in the Rockwood Formation as opposed to the Red Mountain Formation. As far as I can tell there's very little different between the two lithologically and paleontologically, with the Rockwood and Red Mountain occupying pretty much the same stratigraphic position. The difference seems to be that the TGS prefers to use the term "Rockwood" to describe it's Niagaran Silurian system and the GGS and AGS prefer the term "Red Mountain", mostly because the unit is more differentiable in Tennessee whereas in southern NW Georgia and Alabama it is less differentiable. However, the GGS does use the term Rockwood in some of it's reports, and there are some lithological differences between the more southerly and easterly exposures and the more northerly and westerly ones (most notably in the thickness of the hematite beds), so I'm going with Rockwood Formation for these specimens. I had some difficulty in telling the age of the rocks at first. The geologic map I was using wasn't very accurate, and had both the Rockwood Formation and some upper Ordovician units within close proximity to each other. As you'll see with some of the fossils, there are some forms more associated with the Ordovician, such as Isotelus and Vinlandostrophia (Platystrophia), but at the same time I couldn't help but notice there were some similar characteristics between this fauna and the Rose Hill Formation, such as the calymenid molt fragments, and prevalence of Leptaena, which I did not find in the nearby upper Ordovician rocks (not to say it doesn't occur in the Ordovician, just that I didn't find it). Combined with the presence of Eospirifer and the thin beds of iron-rich sandstone and ferruginous limestone, this site is most likely in the Silurian Rockwood Formation. However, in my opinion, it appears to host an earlier, transitionary fauna than the Rose Hill. The collecting itself was pretty easy. The weather was nice, the site not too hard to explore, and the fossils easily extracted from the rock. Most of the exposure was unfossiliferous, however every now and then I'd come across a little part where there'd be a densely packed assemblage, with some loose specimens scattered about. The shale and thin limestone were the most fossiliferous. The first up are some of the brachiopods. A couple of different species it looks like, both tentatively of the genus Dalmanella sp. The report I'm basing this on is pretty old so that name probably no longer applies, however. These are pretty good examples of the more Ordovician forms present at this site. Although Vinlandostrophia (Platystrophia) sp. does occur in the Silurian as late as the Waldron Shale, it is definitely more common in the Ordovician, where V. ponderosa forms veritable coquinas in the upper Leipers Formation. It's a bit hard to see in the bottom one, but it does have a sulcus, unlike most of the Dalmanella sp. present. A few Leptaena sp. Although it is known from the upper Ordovician, I have not found it in the Ordovician rocks nearby and have found several in the Silurian Rose Hill Formation. It is interesting to note that there are such similarities between the two early Silurian fauna across such distances. One characteristic I quickly noticed was that a lot of the specimens in this area occur as loose shells, whereas in Maryland and Pennsylvania they're often internal molds wedged in rock. It makes for easier collecting, and more photogenic fossils! I'm going to go out on a limb and say this is Dalmanella elegantula(?) Pretty good preservation on this one, but I'm not quite sure about it's ID. Maybe some kind of Chonetes (?) sp. Eospirifer sp. with crystalline preservation.

    Local Railcut

    Went out to a railcut that slices through upper Racine formation. This locality is only 10 minutes from my house. I almost never visit it because of scarcity of fossils, however I was reading a paper that mentioned forams in chert and decided to take another look. Here you can see the beds dipping gently to the east. This is interreef strata. Closeby is/was a huge reef, now filled with garbage. Here is a chert nodule to be sliced up. Also, found a silicified coral and packed in my bag. Disturbed this guys slumber. Silicified Favosites coral slice. Interesting to see sediment infilling. Microscope pics showing tabulae. These are just quick slices using a tile saw and submerged in water to bring out detail. Chert slices magnified. It appears to be echinoderm debris and possibly some coral spicules? (Correct me if I'm wrong about the spicules...) Columnal with spines. And finally, I believe this is a foram, the only one I could find. Difficult to photograph. Thanks for reading.

  16. Hi guys so today I came across a new shop that popped up in downtown Hamilton, Ontario. Anyway long story short I bought what appears to be Silurian coral fossil that originated somewhere on the Niagara Escarpment in Ontario or the State of New York. This fossil came from a peculiar museum that liquidated its collections in Niagara of Ontario and closed but the fossil didnt come with a label. Can anyone help me pin down what it is? I have never encountered a fossil like this on the Niagara Escarpment of Hamilton, Ontario. Also this was being sold along with other/what appears to be Silurian corals from the local area of the Niagara region of Ontario/New York.

  18. I have just found this microfossil. It is unfortunately incomplete, but the general shape is still discernible. I have two ideas for this specimen, a fish scale or an inarticulate brachiopod. Of these possibilities, I think that inarticulate brachiopod is more probable. The shape, "growth rings", and slight depression in the top lead me to this conclusion. On the other hand, its size, color, and the absence of such brachiopods from this formation, lead me towards fish scale. I am uncertain on both, and could use some help with this one. The specimen is the from the Leighton Formation, Maine; it is Pridoli, Silurian. Thanks everyone for your time!

    Tentaculite species identification

    I have found a few Tentaculites specimens from the Leighton Formation, Maine; which is Pridoli, Silurian. I was wondering if it is possible to ID them to species, based on the external molds alone. I have read in a few papers that many tentaculite species are identified by the number and shape of the rings on the shell exterior. Unfortunately, I have not been able to many definitive papers on USA Tentaculites sp, and their identification. The specimen below is only of the external mold. This is the best preserved, as well as smallest, of the specimens that I have collected. So, is it possible to ID this specimen to species, or is it not complete enough?   20. I have just finished preparing this little fossil. I really have not seen anything like it. It reminds me of a eurypterid head fragment, or something similar, but the ridges on the "internal mold" are perplexing. Also, it is horizontally symmetrical, suggesting a scale or segment. It is from the Leighton Formation, Maine; which is Pridoli, Silurian. The pictures below first show the "internal mold" under raking light, than of it under direct light. The third picture is of the "external mold" under direct light. It does not have any surface detail that would be brought out by raking light. Thanks in advance for your help!

    Gastropod ID

    So, I have been preparing this nice little gastropod. I have seen five other specimens that shared the same characteristics, but, unfortunately, some of them did not make it. Before I continued to prep this one, I was wondering if it is possible to roughly ID this gastropod. It would greatly facilitate prep work to have a good idea of its shape. All the specimens I have seen have had three whorls. The upper two whorl's ridges are almost absent, this has been consistent through all my specimens. The shape of the shell is coeloconoid. It was found in the Leighton Formation, Maine; which is Pridoli, Silurian. The pictures below are of the specimen under direct, then raking light.     Fish Coprolite?

    I have read in multiple papers that there are three theories to the preservation of thelodont scales. First, a rapid burial when the thelodonts have died under still circumstances, e. g., in a lagoon or other still body of water. This results in associated scales. Second, the thelodonts die and disintegrate in the open ocean, leaving behind disassociated scales. Third, the thelodonts were eaten, and deposited as coprolites. Now, I have just found an array of thelodont scales in a single small spot. The stone they are preserved in is a lighter color than the rest of the shale. The majority of the scales are Phlebolepis elegans, with one being of a Thelodus parvidens. I was wondering if it could be an example of a coprolite? It is from the Leighton Formation, Maine; which is Pridoli, Silurian. The pictures below first show the cross section of the specimen, and then the top of it. I will take pictures of the individual scales as soon as possible. It is rather hard to see the cross sections in the pictures, but the bluish pieces are thelodont scales. Unfortunately, I don't think it will be able to be prepped without destroying some of the details. Thanks in advance for your help! @GeschWhat @Rockwood @jdp
  23. I'm currently working on a simulation of extinct biomes, i'm slowly learning how to make everything as realistic as possible for realtime 3d simulation. I would like to start with plants recreated from some Silurian, lower devonian and upper devonian, and slowly working to recreating the biomes in the areas where they lived and later i'l like to add animals aswell. All my research is made with google i'm not a professional in archeology or 3d art, some of the models are very simple and unpolished for now and will be updated. The project is in the early stages for now but it runs very well on most pc's Here are ome of the plants that lived in the late devonian Tetraxylopteris and leaf detail Archeopteris and branch detail Calamophyton Protolepidodendropsis Uang (China) Weylandia rhenana Aneurophyton Wattieza Leclercqia
  24. I purchased a couple of buckets of fossil/rocks from a friend who found them in the Ohio/Indiana area...which he told me was Ordovician and Silurian. Unfortunatly I've lost the paper that described where this section of fossil/rock came from. At first I thought it was a Crinoid...upon further inspection I noticed that there were patterns along with the ridges. So, I scribed it out of the rock. I noticed that one end was slightly larger than the other and that it was on the "Oval" side. There is a bit of pyritisation...especially inside the small end. So, I'm not really sure ...but I found one similar on the internet(last photo). It looks to be the same but would like your opinions. Thanks Greg
  25. Hello everyone! I recently purchased two fossils, they were both sold to me as Ordovician the crinoid being from Wisconsin and the brachiopod from Illinois. @connorp has told me in a different thread that the dolomites of the region also preserve Silurian fossils and that these look much more like that. Doing a quick Google search I did find something that looks very similar to the crinoid I have, but I don't know enough about these animals or the area they come from to be certain of the ID. Here is the crinoid in question: To me this calyx looked quite similar to that of siphonocrinus both in the gener shape and the plates covering it's surface. Here are some pictures I found online with the region that looked especially similar circled in red: Along with it I also bought this Pentamerid brachiopod which could very likely also be Silurian. Could it belong to the genus Pentamerus?
