Hi all. I was was hoping to get help with this one from the community. It was found in-stream near an outcropping of Pittsburg Bluff in Clatsop County, Oregon, and downstream of some Astoria Formation, both marine sediments. I have found mollusks and arthropods in the same collecting area, usually in very hard concretions. To my knowledge no marine vertebrate fossils have been found within the Pittsburg Bluff Group so if it is vertebrate I'm thinking it came down from the Astoria Formation southwest of the area. It looks and feels like bone, and is extremely porous (tongue sticks). Or it may j

Hello! I recently had the chance to return to my favorite fossil collecting location in Monmouth County (Holmdel) and came across some things that were unfamiliar to me. Could you please help me with identification? Any and all help is greatly appreciated! 1. I think this may be a tooth from some mammal. Perhaps not a fossil? There are lots of farms and wild deer in the area. 2. This one is embedded in a sedimentary matrix. It looks chitinous to me, so maybe it is related to ghost shrimp? 3. I have no idea what these could poten

These are some odd stream finds (fossils? / weird concretions?) from a spring 2022 trip the Ramanessin Brook in Holmdel, NJ. They were all recovered from the Cretaceous stream bed sediment. This is my first time uploading for ID help, so I apologize for any issues with photo quality or lack of scale (I still need to invest in a ruler). Thank you so much for any and all help! 1. @RandyB gifted me this fossil and my failing mind forgot its identity. Hopefully Randy, being quite a bit younger than me, will remember. I believe he said Ramenissan as the location.

Recently I took a trip up to central New Jersey in the US with my sister for our 2nd trip fossil hunting; at a place called “big brook preserve”. As I was sifting through looking at some fossils that I could identify such as shark teeth and fossilized poop with my very basic studying from the Internet and stuff I’ve seen on tv. She calls me over at something she had found while sifting through the dirt in the brook. Thinking that I’d be able to identify it for her I was stumped. it looks like it has characteristics of a fossil from what I think but with my limited knowledge and understanding I

Found this while sifting in a creek in Summerville SC. Found alongside a wide variety of other fossils (variety of shark teeth, dolphin teeth, horse teeth and other pleistocene bones) so cant pinpoint the time frame. But can't find anything that matches and thinking it may be a whale?

Hello everyone, Does anybody know what this might be? Found in a stream in the forest in the region of calvados, Normandy,France. I have never found anything like this. I found what I think is a bone head many years ago at Whispering Pines Camp in Franklinville, NY, which is in Cattaraugus County. It was sitting exposed at the edge of a small stream that runs through the camp, on a hill. I apologize for not having scale in the photos. The measurements are: 2.5 cm thick, 4.5 cm across at very top, 3.5 cm top to bottom as pictured.

I found this in a stream in central Missouri, USA. Not sure what it is... in the base it appears that a crinoid existed in it and that this may have been some sort of cap or stem from a crinoid- however I can't find any pictures of anything like this. Any help would be appreciated!

Not quite sure what I'm looking at here, looks like a bone but there are serrations on either side, is this a tooth of some sort or just a fish bone? Found alongside small shark teeth of all varieties and dolphine/whale fossils.

Found this in Summerville, South Carolina in a stream bed alongside a variation of sharks teeth, shark vertebrate, and other assorted bone fragments. found in sandy/rocky soil right below surface of water. Two similar fossils were found close by as well. First thought was crocodile but it doesn't seem to match, any ideas of what this might be?

What part of the stream should I look for in order to find the most fossils?
Fossilian posted a topic in Questions & Answers
Hello, I am going fossil hunting in a stream called Big Brook in NJ. It's mostly a stream ankle high. So I was wondering where should I dig and sift to find the most fossils? Should I dig deep? Should I go where all the rocks are? Should I dig on land? Thanks. -
