Complete Mesacanthus mitchelli fossil from Tillywhandland quarry.
James_R_V posted a topic in Fossil Hunting Trips
I went fossil hunting at Tillywhandland quarry on Turin hill, Scotland today and found a complete Mesacanthus mitchelli fossil. It is probably the best one I have found yet. Both the head and tail are present. The head is so well preserved you can see both the gill rakers and eye socket. -
It has been a while I have posted anything on here so I thought I would share a couple of fossils I found over the past few months. The first fossil is one I found before lockdown at Achanarras quarry in Caithness. It is a complete Diplacanthus crassisimus fossil. It is species I have never found before.

I have been doing some more fossil hunting at Tillywhandland quarry and I have found a couple of nice fish fossils including a complete Mesacanthus mitchelli fossil. The fish has folded over it's self so it's head is pointing towards it's tail. -

I have been fossil hunting at Tillywhandland quarry near Forfar Scotland over past few months and found quite a few fossils that I thought I would share. The first fossil is an Ishnacanthus gracillis fossil, which I have just finished prepping tonight. It is pretty much complete apart from the very tip of the tail.- 20 replies

I went fossil hunting at Tillywhandland quarry this evening in the search for more Acanthodian fossils. I split dozens of stones finding nothing until I came across what must be the smallest mesacanthus mitchelli that has ever been found. It is so small it could have fit onto a 5p coin. For anyone who has never been to Tillywhandland quarry, it is quarry located on Turin hill near Forfar, Scotland. It famous for producing early Devonian fish and eurypterid fossils. The rocks there formed at bottom of volcanic lake about 405-410 million years ago.

I have been fossil at Tillywhandland quarry near Forfar and have found quite a few Acanthodian fossils, which I thought would share everyone. I could also do with some help identifying species of some of the fossils. I know the first four fossils are Mesacanthus mitchelli, but the rest I am not too sure about.

Preparing acanthodian fossils from the Tillywhandland quarry.
James_R_V posted a topic in Fossil Preparation
Did some fossil hunting at the tillywhandland quarry near Forfar during the weekend and found of partially exposed acanthodian fossils. I just wandering if anyone could give me some advice on how to expose the fossils without damaging them. Someone mention that I could use acid to expose them, but I have been reading that potassium hydroxide could do just as well. The fossil are in clastic carbonate laminates.- 3 replies
