I recently purchased a lot of trilobites with 2 of the trilobites in mind. Also included in the lot was this which I believe is the ventral side of a morroccan lichid. My first thought was Ceratarges but it's missing the outer pygidial spines. If anyone has any idea what species this trilobite is I'd appreciate the input. Unfortunately the specimen appears to be quite distorted so identification may not be easy.

Hello, I recently acquired my first trilobite from Oklahoma and am looking to confirm.... do these specimens typically show a soft orange color under a black light? I have every reason to believe that the specimen is 100% genuine but I was slightly surprised to see that the piece gives off a faint but even orange color under closely applied black light across 95+% of the fossil. There are a few spots that give off no glow/color and these appear slightly darker to the eye under normal light. The matrix obviously gives off no color whatsoever under black light. As I said, the seller (which I won’t name here per forum guidelines) is very reputable so I have no reason to doubt that the piece is original/genuine, but just looking to confirm that the faint orange glow is normal as I wasn’t entirely expecting it. I was told that no restoration/color/painting was done to the specimen. Thank you for any thoughts!

Hello everyone! I found myself in Vermont today, and through much cajoling I convinced my parents to allow a detour to a fossil site a forum member let me know about a year ago. It is from the Crown Point Formation, Ordovician in age. The first time time I was there, about a year ago, I collected a ton of trilobite cross sections. While those are cool, this time I wanted to focus on finding ones worn in a slightly more favorable fashion, and perhaps one worthy of prep. Unfortunately, I didn’t find any worthy of prep, but I did find some decent trilo-bits. Also came home with a Gastropod and a funny piece of pareidolia (450 million year old Mr. Bill?). I didn’t have much space in the car reserved for fossils, so I was sparing in what I picked up. ‘Twas a fun hour or so indeed.

Decided to tackle prepping this greenops today that I found at Penn Dixie a few weeks back. Part of the cephalon broke off in the negative, but the glue job worked OK. There is still some digging needed to expose the right cheek and pleural tips but they should (hopefully) be there. A fold along that side buried them deep in the matrix. Not a perfect bug but my best greenops found so far

Here's a specimen I picked up last year from the St. Leon, Indiana, road cut. The site is late Ordovician in the Waynesville formation. My guess is that it's a trace fossil that shows the convex hyporelief of two trilobite burrows. Each borrow is approximately 4 mm long, and is 2 mm of the other edge of one burrow to the outer edge of the other. In the second image, you'll also see what I believe could be pygidium or cephalon impressions on the left side, about two thirds down.

We found this fossil today in a creek bed in Ballwin, MO (west of St. Louis) and tried to figure out what it was. Thinking that it's the belly of a trilobite, but we're having a hard time verifying anything! Would love to show our daughter the whole thing!

Got my u-dig shales in the mail and went through the pieces and found this. Is it just a piece of a trilobite head or something else? It's about 2cm. Thanks!

Clam Shrimp This primitive crustacean is rarer to find than complete trilobites. Found by my gf Paula today (8/19). When alive 380 million years ago,this shell contained a shrimp looking animal. A rare find and large for the species. A pic of a closely related Asmussia (Devonian) shows the anatomy with eyes and antennae. Paula found the fossil exposed in the shale at the streams edge. She called me over to look at it and she of course thought it was a brachiopod. That's understandable. She found a killer Orthospirifer a week earlier at this same locality. It looks like a brachiopod so you can imagine her confusion when I told her it was a branchiopod Some of you like Paula may have never heard of clam shrimp before. But you may have seen or heard of fairy shrimp (Sea Monkeys) and Triops that are alive today. They are all in the same class - Branchiopoda. Thanks, Mikeymig

Me and @DanJeavs recently had a trip to Wrens nest in Dudley, England. It's Alot older than what we're used to collecting and my first time collecting inland.

So the new house and work have keep me way busier than I had expect. I finally got around to getting my prep room set up for the most part and got around to starting some prep. Here's what I started with. Then the progress of getting it there. I had an oopsie as my engraver kinda got away from me doing some damage. Finally I finished it off with a clear matte finish to help stabilize it and make it pop against the matrix.

Here are a few small bits from the Cincinnatian (Upper Ordovician) roadcut near St Leon, IN, that I’m not sure of the IDs. They were all collected from the butter shale trilobite layer of the Liberty Formation. First is what I think may be part of a crinoid? Not positive. Next, I have no idea. Maybe part of a crinoid. A fragment of a conulariid also crossed my mind. Here is a small brachiopod that I picked up thinking it was Zygospira but is definitely not. I’m guessing this trilobit is Flexicalymene, but I know a few other species of trilobites are found here so I wanted to check.

Hello all, I am a new member here and haven’t searched for fossils for 50 years, when I was 14 years old living in upstate New York. Currently on a trip to Newfoundland with my wife while visiting a friend in Harcourt, NL just 15 miles East of Clarenville I started digging and opening shale rocks in his backyard. I found a few smaller items that were non identifiable fossils but when I opened this one I knew immediately from my teenage years it was a trilobite but after googling I soon discovered there are many many varieties and periods which led me to this forum. I’m thinking this will be an easy one for many of you and save me Many hours of questions. Hope my images come through ok as ok as we are still on the road and I’m doing this with my phone and iPad. Hi, I come from Malaysia and I am new to fossil collecting. Mainly I am interested in dinosaurs. But sharks and trilobites are cool too. At the moment I only have a Carcharodontosaurus tooth, a Spinosaurus tooth, a trilobite, 2 Meg teeth of different sizes and formations, and a pair of ammonite. Bought them, didnt find them myself. I have no idea how and where to start fossils hunting in Malaysia. I know little to nothing about geology. I dont know enough biology to tell what or where a bone belong to. Heck, I dont even know what kind of prehistoric animals used to live here. I hope to learn how to find fossils and to prepare them.

Hey all, My sister had a friend in town and it was my turn to come up with an activity, so naturally I took them out fossil hunting! I picked DSR since there is a 100% guarantee that everyone who looks will find something. I spent most of the time there ripping up slabs for my sister and her friend to split down. Unfortunately a thunderstorm rolled in and we had to leave early, so there is a sizeable pile of fresh material waiting for whomever gets there next. The girls found some good stuff- brachs, crinoids, and a few dipleura & greenops cephalons. I had the lucky find of the day with a decently sized, albeit disarticulated, dipleura. I think the whole thing is there, but it will take some prep to find out for sure.

Not exactly an ID but I can't think of a better place to post this. Here is an E. rana I found this week at Penn Dixie. Prep started on the right lobe which was exposed on the side of a block (fourth pleura is damaged due to being exposed). It was looking like a near perfect bug, nicely inflated and complete aside from the small chip. When I made my way around to the other side I found more damaged pleura. This was a surprise as the entire middle and left lobes were buried under significant matrix. Could this be an injury that killed/happened during the trilobite's lifetime?

I recently found a nice Calymene tuberculata trilobite on my vacation to Gotland. I’m currently in the process of preparing it and wonder what coating I should use? Is it possible to give it a slightly wet look while not making it look glossy and artificial? I’m considering some kind of vax-based product. Any tips?
